«Hmm? Did something just fla…» and you’re dead - that’s how powerful Excalibur, also known as the King’s Sword, really is. But what if Excalibur was real? Had Excalibur been built on Earth, how powerful would it be and what would be the tactical implications for this superweapon?

I think that Excalibur's biggest failure is the fact that it can only fire once before cooling, so I guess that a saturation cruise missile attack could destroy it with ease.
@maucazalv903

I would say that´s the point of having a very long-range, if you can destroy missiles 10 minutes before it hits the are that means that you should use more than 50 ICBM at the same time *now that depends on the speed of both the missiles AND how quick you can detect them*

For the record, the Heavy Command Cruiser idea did originate in our real life, but the idea was scrapped due to (obviously) extremely huge cost and the extreme lack of cost efficiency. Laser weapons and railguns, however, are being developed as we speak by real life arms manufacturers, and the US military is known to plan and develop vehicles and vessels for these weapons.

What if they were to reflect the beam off of several satellites? Then it could have the range to hit anywhere on the planet, if the satellites were lined up correctly.

With multiple satellites, it's range DOES become effectively limitless... however defending those satellites then becomes a logistical problem in itself. IIRC one of the Gundam anime does something similar... 00 if memory serves me. Basically shoot down the reflectors and you limit the range.
@PogingNavy94
@PogingNavy94 7 жыл бұрын
Problem with downing the Satellites, as mentioned in Tom Clancy's novel "Cardinal of Kremlin" is that, there would be a lot of space debris floating in Geosynch Orbit, therefore, it would be quite problematic to identify the reflectors unless someone inside reveals the locations of the target. Fortunately though, thermal blooming would cut the resulting power to half by the time it reaches its target. What kind of laser would the Excalibur be though? Cause there are various types of lasers.

I wonder if Excalibur can be used as an asteroid-countering weapon, should Ulysses' fragments impact the Osean continent. On a separate note, Osea and Yuktobania were involved in the cleanup of the frags, so they probably reverse-engineered Belkan laser tech for their Arkbird, the Useans for the Megalith and maybe even the Meson Cannon by the Leasathians. Another edit: I wonder if the Meson Cannon is linked with the laser gunpods we saw in the AC7 trailer.
@dragostorm5947
@dragostorm5947 6 жыл бұрын
Well Excalibur was built as an extreme long range anti-ICBM weapon, so I think that the laser tower also could have been used to shoot down Ulysses' fragments due to its long range, and destruction capability. Even if the weapon itself can't reach the fragments, the satellite support could have detected it and used its own lasers to destroy them. And yes, the laser pods work similarly to the Meson Cannon, as they are pulses of energy being discharged at a constant rate. Also the Meson Cannon was created around the year 2020, which is also the same time AC7 takes place in, as the game takes place 10 years after AC5.

Excalibur isn't that unrealistic, if you do some research. There are actually multiple projects and programs with the same name, funded by DARPA. involving interception of an ICBM with a bunch of Xray laser satellites and Naval or Aerial deployed High Powered Laser systems for shooting down ICBM on their ascension phase and their terminal phase. Both of them have their flaws, they could actually work.

I think Excalibur would be kinda useless against a massive missile attack. The amount of power needed and the expense of it would mean they'd be too few to challenge a serious missile attack. If any kind of laser defense against ICBMs were built, it'd better resemble the DEAD system from Black Ops 3, much smaller systems that can be built in larger numbers near cities.
@SomeGuyFromCrowd
@SomeGuyFromCrowd 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the slow firing speed (5 shots/minute) would be useless against a barrage of cruise missiles mixed with chaff and active radar decoys. Even if it had 100% accuracy, it'd only be able to fry five missiles per minute - and that's assuming it'd even work against them! Cruise missiles are stupidly fast; we're approaching the point where we have *hypersonic* ones, and they might just fly out of the beam before taking much damage.
@cloudmangalm03
@cloudmangalm03 7 жыл бұрын
Well, you could also assume that the satellites could move to fire at multiple targets during a single shot, so it could potentially be quite deadly. I mean, the laser moved back in Mission 8, since it shot down three of the transports

1. 1:40 this kind of makes sense if you think that in the long-range version it is deflected with a mirror that would absorb part of the energy instead of deflecting- 2. honestly defeating this thing would be very hard without the Doraemon pocket that every aircraft have in Strangereal that let them carry 60 missiles xd but obviously, the real tower would have less resistance than the one in the game but still 3. dedicating an entire nuclear facility to power just one weapon instead of a city- well nuclear submarines exists and most aircraft carriers also use nuclear energy so it is economically plausible

I think, if Excalibur was a real superweapon, it would be possible, that USSR would be able to deploy it on central parts of Russia, near a Moscow city. It would be enough to fully cover western parts of USSR with major cities, military bases, roads and industrial/agricultural areas. I have tried to put that circle on Russia. If USSR didn't collapsed, of course. It had all scientific, power and military resources to deploy that.
@Skyfighter64

One thing about building it in a valley or plain to prevent aircraft from "Nap of the Earth" flying to get inside it's range, I would, rather build it on a Mountain range, so as to enhance the coverage area w/o Satellite coverage, Also because having the high ground, looking down, provides a similar advantage in area denial as the hypothetical plain would have. If this weapon were built on top of the Colorado Rockies, for instance, there should only be a couple small areas of immunity (The shadows of the lesser American Mountain ranges, Sierra Nevada and the Appalacians), and you could set up AAA defenses somewhat more effectively, because they would have smaller chunks of sky to focus on. At least, that's what I think of. There's probably plenty I'm not considering, but oh well.
@combativeThinker

You could also hollow out portions of the mountain beneath the installation to be used in the construction of the weapon's nuclear power plant.

It would probably be able to destroy the shells in flight. It's a powerful laser, would be able to partially melt them or maybe make them explode in mid-flight. And targeting artillery shells isn't that hard; Israel's Iron Dome system can intercept shells and even heavy mortar bombs. You would have to get the artillery pretty close too, so Excalibur could just shoot at them on the ground, maybe?

In real world scenarios, if we already reached the technology level required to build Excalibur then the most probable real world solution that I can think of: 1. Other countries would build counter super weapon 2. Other countries would build weapons specifically designed to defeat Excalibur 3. Other countries would scramble to halt or cancel Excalibur project when it was still being built. Not complying will most probably result on world war where all countries scramble to attack country that build Excalibur. Building such weapon, will not only strikes fear on enemies countries but also allies alike. 4. And the cheapest way (that I can think of) to destroy Excalibur if somehow the entire world let a country to build such a weapon, would be dropping a massive amount of long range missile, artillery shells, rockets, and basically everything you have in ground based attack. Perhaps Excalibur can shoot down 100 or 200 missile/shells in succession... but 1,000 or 2,000 of them at almost the same time? Unlikely.

Airborne laser anybody? We could use that exact same technology to build a framework. Build a tower and then install the laser unit directly on top. A system like this needs to be installed in places like Japan, South Korea, and then of course off the coast of the US.

The prime example of airborne fortress is the Boing 747 Carrier back in 1970's but didn't even pass the drawing board, also the 2 American Airships the Arkon Class USS Arkon and USS Ohaio(same as Germany's Hidenburg passenger airships) back in 1930's but both were destroy by nature not by war.

Wouldn't Earth's gravitational pull be enough too bend the Lazer beam over the distances at which it fires? That should extend it's range by quite a bit. Also, could Excalibur be used to attack satellites/orbital craft like the Arc Bird?
@traviskitteh
@traviskitteh 7 жыл бұрын
Right, but gravity does have sway over light. believe it or not, gravity can warp, or totally redirect light if the gravitational pull is strong enough (think black holes.) Believe it or not, Einstein actually speaks about this in his studies of gravity and its effects on the universe. According to him, light, like most matter, is still subject to the shape of the universe, and therefore can be "warped" by forces that have an expanding and contracting effect on it (it being the universe.) Link for proof: www.einstein-online.info/spotlights/light_deflection www.quora.com/Why-is-light-affected-by-gravity-if-photons-are-massless

Gravity wouldn't even add a meter to Excalibur's range at absolute best. If gravity were strong enough to seriously increase Excalibur's distance, I'm pretty sure it'd also make the tower collapse under its own weight, or even pose problems for the ecosystem responsible for producing the people who built it.. as in, by being almost totally inhospitable for all but microbial life.

The Earth IS flat. The laser beam would only be limited in range because lasers dilate the further they get from their source.

Excalibur sounds like a system the British would use. IRL I think it would be a British system to defend the British Isles from ICBM’s during the Cold War.

It's worth noting that Lockheed Martin has mentioned in a video about The Helio system using a lasers to counteract icbm's so this idea isn't as Fantastical As It Seems although I would be very surprised if you'd have one really large laser instead of a bunch of small lasers also I'd be surprised if they could take down an aircraft

So, we get that Excalibur has enough energy output to destroy aircraft and ICBMs, but I'm curious about it's area of effect. Supposing it fires with satellite support at a ground target, what's the "blast radius"?

We have THOR. No lasers admittedly but it IS an orbital weapons platform. I guess that makes it closer to the SOLG really, only instead of nukes it fires rods of solid tungsten that do basically the same kind of damage on impact minus any radiation. It's pretty much the idea that you can kill someone by dropping a penny on them from high enough in the air taken to it's logical conclusion.

MlG_4sr13L You can change the settings within the game to represent height and speed in Imperial (Knots & Feet) or Metric (Km and Meters)

The range of the excalibur, if put on feet is way shorter than on meters
@ghostspy1073
@ghostspy1073 7 жыл бұрын
MlG_4sr13L Just because the numbers are different, doesn't mean the range will change, and since some existing units of measurement has already been given in Km, it wouldn't make sense to use feet and convert the max range of Excalibur to miles (Imperial). The official max range was given by in-game or official sources made by Project Aces. So even if he had used Imperial, the range would still be the same, just in different units from SI units.

you got the height wrong. the ground where Excalibur is isn't at sea level
@AceCombatFan
@AceCombatFan 7 жыл бұрын
The ground level at Tauberg is about 200 ft compared to mean sea level so Excalibur is about 2800 ft high. For simplicity I put them together as there's not much difference. At 2800 ft above sea level Excalibur's range is about 104 km

It is a laser meaning it's a beam of light. If there is a change in gravity, it wouldn't bend unless you're somehow firing it by a black hole.
