What If Germany Just Built More Panzer IV's?

The people who say "They shoulda just built more Panzer IVs" don't really know how tanks work. Tanks don't just operate on their own, they need fuel, they need ammo, they need food and water for the crew, they need spare parts and tools, they need recovery vehicles in case one gets stuck and can't move, etc. All that requires the use of other vehicles, let's just assume it's only trucks and a few recovery vehicles for the sake of argument. That means that they also need to carry spare fuel for the trucks and recovery vehicles, food for the crew, ammo, they same stuff as the tanks, all of which are things Germany struggled with from 1942 onwards. Having more Panzer IVs would exacerbate this problem, and building larger and fewer tanks starts to look more appealing. Knowing all that, which would you rather have to stop an Allied or Soviet push, 100 Panzer IVs, or 20 Tigers? I use a 5:1 ratio since that's about how the ratios work for the two tanks' resources to make, if I remember right. Personally, I'd go with the 20 Tigers. TL;DR, building more Panzer IVs means they had to make more supplies for them, which means even more of a drain of resources than there was IRL

"Did I just kill that with HE?" Yes, yes you did just kill that Crusader with a HE shell to the MG port. As for building more Panzer 4s, it certainly would have been more economical and I'm SURE they could have modified them to have Angled Hulls. Its a Excellent example of a Medium Tank, and then they made the PANTHER, which depending on who you ask was even better. Speaking of Grants and Lee, unlocked those tanks recently and Its pretty fun to duel a Panzer with them. If only cus you won't get one shot less they aim dead center. Which must be pretty traumatizing for my crew since ONE GUY always tends to survive. That can't be a pleasant work environment.

To answer the question: they would lose, maybe even worse than IRL, it was a miracle for the design that it was produced for 6 straight years even though it was outdated in 42 and never meant to be the workhorse of the Wehrmacht.

@@Personontheinternet4598 They didn't have the fuel and crews for what was available, if they had more vehicles, these would just stand in a reserve park awaiting petrol that wouldn't come.

Also many people who simply say "mass produce more panzer 4s" tend to forget about how many StuG 3s were produced, more than 10,000 built by the end of the war, with some panzer 4s turned into StuG 4s when production fell short. and yeah, although the StuG 3s to this day still holds the highest tank kill to death ratio, it didn't really help Germany win.

@@Llamasomenumbers They were still not powerful enough to destroy russian late war heavy tanks such as IS-2. If only German managed to mass produced Panther sooner, it would be a different story.

@@macobuzi Between massive material shortages and manpower shortages, they couldn’t afford to produce enough tanks to win the war. You want 10,000 Panthers? Sure, but that’s almost 450,000 tonnes of steel that can no longer be used for anything else and 50,000 men who are no longer on the front line and need to be trained to use the tanks, not to mention all the maintenance crews, spare parts, fuel, and ammunition needed to keep them in the fight. They could’ve extended the war for a while with some better resource management, but they couldn’t win.

If Germany were to produce a tank like the M4 sherman the war would've been differentbut not sure. The design for the M4 was to make it easy and quick to change parts especially with the front engine being able to be detachable making the tank get back on the field quicker.

You can one shot IS-2 with the panzer 4 just shoot at the lower part of the turret on the center and the shell would go straight trough the drivers hatch

Believe it or not, but this question often gets brought up by serious historians as well. But I will refer you all to the opinion of tank historian and expert Nicholas Moran aka 'The Chieftain'. Germany's biggest problems towards the end of the war was simply that they didn't have enough fuel for the tanks they had or enough crews to crew them. What sense would it have made to produce more tanks of a simpler and cheaper variant if there simply was no fuel to put in it or any crews available to crew them? The Panzer 4 was by all account a capable tank throughout the war, even into 1945, but it was no Tiger or Panther.

They cannot produce more Pz4 becase they lack oil, that's why they start to make more and more heavy tanks like Tiger, and "mediuns" like Panther, because they could put a better tanks in action using a similar amount of oil...

@@yamatokurusaki5790 They do not have oil, and rubber was made of oil, in that case they dont have both, the same happens with italy (thats why the regia marine almost never sail) and Japan (that's why they need to conquer china WW2 was a war for energy

@@alexsandermc9794 actually china was for food. japan was importing a lot of their food from manchuria and wanted more sources. also the vast amount of iron mines in china would help the japanese industries greatly. rubber and oil was all in the south east, like the french indochina, and british controlled Malaya, Singapore, and Burma. fun fact about their invasions, japan view on Australia was that they had so little importance they never even planned for an invasion of the country because doing so would cost more than they could ever gain. hence why they really only annoyed them with air raids from time to time.

Allied tanks only suck in enlisted because the game artifically favours the germans. Because of the br system and how allies are consistently uptiered, we end up with alied tanks from the early war period facing late war german tanks. Panzer 4j should be the start of br4 not end of br3.

Tf u mean pz4j should be in br4, that thing dies to nearly everything , it just who shoots first, in downtier it ain't anything special 45mm cannons eat this thing, 37mm have more issue due to not having he filler but still it's killable.

Literally what the newbie WW2 fan says. Then you learn about Germany's limitations in resources (mainly oil) and manpower, ans it makes sense to get your tanks as good as they can to compensate your strictly lower numbers. Fun video btw, it is pretty original to make a video out of WW2 small talk!

@@yamatokurusaki5790 from mid-war onwards, in terms of design and per-unit firepower, armor, etc, yes. They were top quality, except their engines and transmission lol. Early-war German tanks were lackluster, but late-war German tanks were superb. Anyone would rather be on a Panther or a Tiger than on a T-34 or Sherman, even in their upgraded variants. Only the Soviets by the very end of the war had something that surpassed German tanks (the IS-6, which saw no combat).

@@yamatokurusaki5790 ehh yes and no. design wise they had better features for defensive operations. mainly powerful guns and strong armour, and good transmissions. the problem was quality of parts, quality of materials, and the final drive not breaking down every 5 minutes. but hey there is always the soviets. who not only have the same problems as the germans, poor quality materials, poor quality of parts made with said materials, poorly trained troops and finally, poorly designed tanks as well. like if i was stuck between a late war german tank or a late war soviet, i would take the german any fucking day.

Turns out BR3 tanks dominate when they get down tiered, who could have predicted this. Bonus points for the guy on AA the whole match shooting down the planes.
