The biggest planet in the Solar System. And the smallest star in the known Universe. Today, they are on a collision course. EBLM J0555-57Ab is a red dwarf and the smallest star we've ever discovered. Jupiter is huge. It's about 11 times larger than Earth. But because it's mostly made of hydrogen, it's not massive enough to be a star. So what would happen if these two giants collided?

Wait…. If that smaller star -57AB star took over the space of Jupiter, wouldn’t the asteroids then be gravitated to that dwarf star and still not hit earth??? I mean that’s the least of the issue as adding another star in the system will bring on a whole other set of issues but not the asteroids from the asteroid belt. Any clarity is greatly appreciated 🥹

In this case, we are assuming that the star is moving freely throughout the solar system. It is not in the same orbit as jupiter. While moving randomly, it will mess up the orbits of million of asteroids and send at least some of them to us.

@@definitelynotadreamstan3247 Would it continue to move freely, however? If our sun is much more massive, I think it would capture 57AB into an orbit of some configuration. (Unless 57AB was moving so rapidly or at such an angle as to slingshot itself around the sun and not be captured?)

After absorbing Jupiter, wouldn't the rogue red dwarf star do as much as Jupiter to "mop up" the comets, performing the same function? Or even do a better "mop up" job because the star is more massive?

@adedejifemi9014
@adedejifemi9014 Жыл бұрын
Jupiter's mostly made of hydrogen like all other stars, yes. Nuclear fusion occurs because of the extreme gravity on those stars. Jupiter would need to be more massive (celestial objects with more mass have stronger gravity) in order for nuclear fusion to occur. Simply put, as crushing as Jupiter's gravity is, it is not enough to convert hydrogen to helium
@shaikhmanal

There's a reason why Jupiter is also called as "A failed star".
@PlanetYurei
@PlanetYurei Жыл бұрын
Fr hydrogen makes a star expand and since its converted to helium from nuclear fusion of its core, it’ll start increasing with high temperatures & pressure so you’re right it doesn’t make since because hydrogen is one of the main things that makes a star extend from red being the coldest to blue being the hottest. Red, orange, yellow, white, blue are all star colors. So he should’ve said “Because it has lesser amount of hydrogen, it’s not massive enough to be a star”. But jupiter needs about 83 - 85 tons of hydrogen to its mass to become a dwarf in size star. Idk what was on his mind.
@egg-...

@@shaikhmanal because it doesnt have enough mass, doesn't Jupiter need like 11 more Jupiters to become a star?

Sure, it’s made out of hydrogen, but it’s not massive enough to be a star. That’s why it’s takes 79 other jupiters to make jupiter a star.

I like it how you showed us what would happen if Jupiter and the smallest star know to us collided but than told us we'd be hit by almost 200 meteors, comets etc. every day. If EBLM J0555-57Ab really happen to collide with Jupiter in some mysterious way, it wouldn't have just disappeared - instead of Jupiter's gravity protecting us from space rocks, it would, as it would start to orbit the Sun.
@nathanmyles3785
@nathanmyles3785 Жыл бұрын
It would cause chaos with the orbits of the planets though. That much mass in place of Jupiter would likely move everything around and would also pull on the sun and they'd actually orbit each other, so the sun would move a lot more as well. My guess is that it would at minimum create very ecliptic orbits on the planets as they rearrange to orbit both stars. The flares from the dwarf would also likely render the solar system not suitable for life

Also, a black hole's accretion disc would be brighter than the red dwarf's, due to its intense gravity. It would be so hot that it would glow in the x-ray spectrum, with some of the light also being ultraviolet and blue, giving it a blue-hot glow. On the other end of its radiation spectrum, it would probably give off some gamma rays too. The red dwarf would not be able to achieve this. Even combined with its accretion disc of Jupiter's gas, the red dwarf would probably still be dimmer than the black hole's accretion disc

I don't know how it's a star if it's the size of Saturn. defies logic.

We don't want another star in our solar system.We love our Jupiter ❤️.... And also we don't want a blackhole.

They will have to overcome mutual repulsion for gravity to cause collision otherwise balance will be established between gravitational attraction and electromagnetic repulsion and they will start orbiting each other.

Probably at first there would be more chaos overall but when you consider that Jupiter is keeping earth safe by attracting asteriods then the red dwarf should attract even more.

I mean it's just not dense enough. Which in turn needs more mass or less volume.

600 light years is extremely close. Of course, it’s gravitational pull is really gonna never reach us. Not by a long shot. But it’s still very impressive such a small star can exist. To think there’s a star smaller than a large gas giant is phenomenal. But if you think about it, if the universe is infinite in length, width, and height, there’s probably stars smaller than earth.
