I think the "Claytallica" situation is a perfect example of how talent doesn't automatically fit anywhere. In the same way Lars wouldn't fit in any other band, Claypool would not have fit in well with Metallica. He's probably the most gifted bass player of all time, but his style was just too funky. He might have fit in the Red Hot Chili Peppers or even Rage Against the Machine, but Metallica was on a whole other spectrum. That being said, I'd love to hear Metallica cover "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver."

Before 'Primus' Les had a band called 'Blind Illusion' or something like that which was a thrash/heavy metal act with strong prog influences, so I guess at that time (1986) he might have fit in perfectly. Flotsam and Jetsam (Doomsday for the Deceiver is a kickass album), Metallica, Papa Wheelie, Echobrain (The Echobrain self titled debut album is amazing), Voivod, Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne’s solo band, Newsted and the Chophouse Band are cool. Much respect to you, JTJ.. I love Jason Newsted's style and abilities as well. I have much appreciate and respect for him. He is way underrated and heavily criticized. Being compared to Cliff is BS because Jason is his own musical prodigy. I'm not knocking Cliff, we all know Cliff was awesome; but people fail to see how good Jason is because they keep putting him in Cliff's shadow. Nice topic, I think one thing in particular is pretty interesting: the clash between the interview Les gave for the Metallica doc and the one that he did about himself. You know, the "I wept. What I think is that maybe he was kind of persuaded to say that by either the management or the production, because the two interviews definitely struggle with each other.

I agree with with you (and also with Les Claypool himself) as to why this wouldn't work, as cool as is on paper. When people wonder "what if [person] played for [band] instead of [other person]?", they tend to think of how those artists are now and what that fusion would be, but earlier in their careers, they'd be at different points artistically and personality-wise. So when we wonder what it would be like if Les played for Metallica instead of Jason, we imagine a Primus/Metallica hybrid, when that probably wouldn't have been the case as you said. Still, I'd love to see them collaborate now. Maybe not a whole album because that might backfire (see Lulu), but maybe something like bringing Les on live and have him play the bass part for "Master of Puppets" in his style or something like that.

No mention of Blind Illusion? There's pretty much what Les would have done if he got the Metallica gig. Good basslines. Fit the music. Nothing flashy though.

As a bassist I can respect Les’s talent and playing but I’m not a fan of him or Primus. I think Flotsam and Jetsam could’ve been much bigger with Jason tho.

If Les joined, that would maybe have meant no The Sane Asylum by Blind Illusion where Les played before Primus, and that would be a loss, the bass sound in this album is spinechilling and highlights bass like no other metal band except Primus.

Cliff Burton didn't try to become a member of Metallica. Metallica tried to become members of Cliff Burton. They succeeded, but still had to change town for that ahah. Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse is the most underrated bassist in the history of music. And the guy plays with fingers. He is always present for being absent on lists like that one of the Rolling Stone magazine and what not. I mean Cannibal Corpse is not exactly an underground and unknown band.

Oh! & Andriy my friend.. Quick question.. I know it's a random question but I noticed the length of your nails on your right hand.. A bit longer then the left/fretboard hand.. Is that helpful to you? I personally keep my nails short on both hands.. If anything a tad bit longer on my right hand if playing guitar/acoustic. Anyhow! Stay well frieend 😎 - edit I just looked back & I think I got it wrong.. It appears you/we both & possibly many other players tend to have our (RIGHT) hand fingernails a bit longer for finger picking and so on 😁 Anyhow! I still keep my right hand fingernails relatively short.. Specially when full on playing Bass
