Yes Jason really was. Jason had to go and do something with his life than to have so much restrictions, while part of MetallicA. It was tough.. but he did what he needed to do. I miss him in the band, sometimes. He has however been very active until the last couple of years. I admire him and what his brought into his life journey. His abilities are amazing. All that matters is his happiness and life.

What I always really liked about Jason’s bass playing is that he knew where to place his bass lines in a song. His bass lines fit really well with what ever Lars would playing on the drums. Essentially he would punch up the bottom end of a song and make Lars’s drumming sound better. That’s why I like bass players who follow the drums as oppose to the guitars. That’s my one complaint with Rob is that he tends to follow the guitar a bit too much and that compromises the bottom end of the drums in a song. Now with that being said, Rob is still an excellent bass player it’s just that I prefer Jason’s style of playing.
@FrogBoatFishing Жыл бұрын

@PaulKretz4 жыл бұрын
*For anyone wondering what's wrong with the sound:* the mics have "noise gates" on'em, which means they turn off as the sound falls below certain level in dB (e.g. the voice of a singer). You can hear the crowd noise quite well, when they talk and then the volume drops. This is done for cleaner live sound, so that no sound of everything going on getting to the mic gets into PA system (thus loops out to mic and PA back again, creating awful feedback) when there's no vocals. The bass is just a "direct sound", which means it was recorded directly from guitar, passing over the amp. That's why it sounds bad also (no sustain). The signal is split - one way goes to PA with speaker cabinet and mic (probably also having a gate), the other - directly to the mixing desk. In this instance we got the latter. No secret for a sound guy here.
@pat84373 жыл бұрын
Not to sound antagonistic, genuinely curious. Is there a way to run the amp signal into the soundboard for recording purposes?
@PaulKretz3 жыл бұрын
@@pat8437 That is exactly what I described above. The splitter device is used to route the sound wherever you want.
@pat84373 жыл бұрын
@@PaulKretz I’m confused admittedly. You mentioned we just got the bass directly, ni amp/speaker cab, just the signal + effects. You mentioned the signal was split to get there, the other half going to the PA from the microphones in front of the cabinets. Am I following correctly?
@PaulKretz3 жыл бұрын
@@pat8437 That's right. I mean here, in this video, we only hear the direct part of the "splitted" signal. The other half was most probably routed to the FX-PREAMP-AMP-CAB-MIC-MIX-PA for the audience to get great sounding bass. BUT, that signal from the miked cab can also be routed back to the mixing deck for recording. In metal music direct and amp bass tracks are quite often mixed together in different proportions to get really tight sound (both live and on record). Having two tracks there can also be parallel compression going, distortion over DI track and other effects... Sound engineering and mixing hides a lot of tricks 🤘😎

Cliff was treated by James and Lars as a 'partner.' While Jason and Rob's treated as 'employees.' Jason never felt the respect and I'm sure many of his creative input were dismissed. And Rob's now also just playing the bass as an 'operator' rather than a 'creator.' Just doing what's instructed of him. That's what people have to understand.

People seem to be oblivious to the fact that Jason had been playing professionally since 78, he was well accomplished with flotsam and Jetsom, writing playing and singing. I understand Cliff was good, but he was a 20 yr old kid, he didn't have 20 or 30 yrs of bass playing under his belt to be given the god status that everyone wants to bestow upon him. Death doesn't make him some kind of deity. What's truly hilarious is that Cliff only played on 8 songs TOTAL between MoP, RTL and Kill em All... 8 songs people!!!!! The producer that worked for Metallica between MoP and AJFA has gone on record in interviews to say that Jason was a phenomenal bassist. Cliff was good, but 8 songs and a horrific death don't grant god mode. I bet most of the people swinging on Cliffs nuts weren't even alive for the albums preceding Jason. They just jump on the Cliff was the greatest bandwagon. Jason was and always will be Metallica.

There is a lot more to it than just technical ability. It’s about who he was, how he impacted the other members as a human being. Bands are about musicians inspiring each other on a common creative vision. Cliff of course was not the greatest bass player, but the rest of Metallica sure as hell looked up to his character. Had that terrible accident not happened, it would of been him pioneering their direction as a band and not Lars. He was a voice of reason, without too much of an inclination towards developing a big ego like the other half of Metallica did.

I'm confused as to the assertion that Cliff only played on 8 songs total. Who else played the bass parts on those albums if not Cliff?

Thanks for the upload.Nice to hear Jason acknowledging his past at 5.35 with his solo from 'Metalshock' From F&J's album 'Doomsday for the Deceiver'. He was amazing back then in 1985/'86 and still is. Just type in Flotsam and Jetsam 1986 to see what I mean. Knowing your Metal History helps!

Jason is better than Robert in my opinion. I think he's a more aggressive bass player, better bass solos, kickass vocals, and outstanding distortion. Sure Robert is pretty damn fast but put anything else that Robert has next to Jason, Jason's going to win.

I wouldn't call covering a multitude of songs a good "solo".

Well either way the style of Jasons playing in some songs is better than robs. Creeping death, bells, etc, and also vocals. Kick tremendous ass

I think Jason was great in Flotsam and Jetsam. In Metallica, it seems like the other guys just had him play what they wanted and he wasn’t ever really as involved in the creativity part of writing as in Flots. When Jason left Flots, Flots’s sound changed too.
