In 1864 two ships wrecked on opposite ends of Aukland island, south of New Zealand. They never met or even knew of the other group of sailors. One group survived by dropping their previous ranks and working together. The other group did not cooperate and nearly every one died. Joan Druett's 'Island of the Lost' tells this fascinating tale. Highly recommended.

I think it differs because there are so many boys of different ages, that are not native to island life in any way and dont know each other in lord of the flies. Definitely going to look this story up though, it's fascinating. I Wonder if they had a conch 🤔😂

Hahaha, I didn't see anything about a conch. 😂 The documentary linked in the notes is very good though! Definitely worth a watch.

As A Man Thinketh by James Allen on here it's short. It can help most people change their outlook and actions in life, in my opinion. Here's a quote from the book " A man doesn't directly control his circumstances but he can control his thoughts which indirectly yet surly shape his circumstances."

I hope this hidden gem of a book becomes as well known in my lifetime as the Bible and Shakespeare. This book can get a little graphic in parts just to be warned. This is a philosophy book that was written nearly two thousand years ago. Outlines of Pyrrhonism by Sextus Empircus. Most of it can be found on here for free on the channel American Pyrrho. It's a bizarre read that will forever change how you think, whoever reads this.

I definitely believe the more optimistic version is more realistic than the novel. But I still love "Lord of the Flies."

Well, Lord of the Flies didn't have 6 boys but like 30, and weren't teenagers and already friends but younger kids that just met... the cricumstances are too different to compare outcomes... but anyway cool channel!

Still, the one that actually happened is probably more realistic than the fictional story.

Brits, by nature are much darker, more depressive, and even their humor tends to be dark and dry. Then one depressed by war writes Lord of the Flies. It is very much a tale from the mind of that person at that time. People of the South Pacific, by contrast are very friendly, good natured and good humored. They tend to be generous to a fault. That a group of them, in the same situation as given in Lord of the Flies, work together to feed and support each other should be expected. Heck, they did not even want to kill chickens. Chickens were domestic animals to them, almost like dogs and cats. Of course, these chickens had reverted to the wild, but with no predators, had no fear and were readily caught and penned by children. Children who knew the eggs would be a good food supply, easily cooked, but also edible raw. Had any of them lived on a farm with chickens, they would have been more likely to kill the chickens at a rate that their replacement was assured by new chicks growing to adult chickens. However, they had succeeded at catching seabirds and would never think of them in the same way they thought of chickens. One story is the imagination of a man raised to have little humor, at the lowest point of his life. The other the reality of friends in a bad situation, but one that can be survived. So they survived it. I expect they remained friends after rescue. What they said to the sailor at rescue was that they wanted to make certain that no one was left behind.
