@edfu_text_U_later4 жыл бұрын
@@MarcosJuanFerrari I agree, I think Kirk wrote more for the song as a listener where Marty was more for the guitar players ear. Which is also determined a lot by the music, Megadeth's riffs were often more technical in the left hand (fretting hand if we think left and right hand players) than Metallica's. Metallica seemed more about aggression in the right hand and being more rhythmic, which lent more to rock/blues with technical aspects infused from a solo perspective. As I mentioned in a earlier comment, I have actually warmed to Kirk's new approach to soloing. It reminds me of a more technical Kim Thayil (from Soundgarden). I think people also forget Dave had quite a bit of influence over his lead guitarists soloing style after Poland was kicked out, he would tell them what was acceptable and what wasn't in Megadeth.

@@fredriksvard2603 Kirk has been one of my biggest inspirations as a lead guitarist. He deserves everyone respect. I've studied his solos more than I have anybody. There is a lot of theory and major modes in his playing. Several solos he borrowed from the third or fifth chord was brilliant. Some times playing pentatonics on the 5 instead of 1. Meaning B minor over E minor. Harmonic minor, phrigian dominate. He used a lot of scales modes and arppegios. Most of all, a very tasteful guitarist. My favorite thing was how his solos taught me to use Dorian with minor pentatonics.

Chris Marts cool, im not knowledgable enough but i think i know what you mean by pent on 5 instead of 1 for example. I just feel like he adds leads with hooks and atnosphere that become signsture parts of songs, not just mindless noodling. Like harvester, how did he decide on those notes? Also, he's blindingly fast and accurate when he wants to be, i was really impressed by his playing in gothenburg last year. Of course there are a zillion skilled guitarists around these days, but there was no real roadmap when he started out. Listening to dean delrays podcast, it seems kirk was way more influential in creating thrash than some give him credit for.
@CMM53004 жыл бұрын
@@fredriksvard2603 Kirk should definitely get more credibility as an accomplished well rounded guitarist and writer. All the melodies and harmonies added so much more to the songs. I think Marty was just more unique with his scale choices and following the chords better. Marty was a lot harder to study and understand his playing. I started with Kirk but it took years before I was ready to study Marty. It's all about how well you serve the song, and try to put your signature on it. Srv..... played box pentatonics and no one will ever criticize his guitar playing. Marty Friedman switches things up from lick to lick following the chords like a jazz player to keep things interesting. Marty likes to try things like C major 7 over an A minor7 ECT... Kirk does sometimes too but not as often. Fade to black, solo, arppegio climb. chords are B minor, A major, G major A major. The first arppeggio is Em9 over Bm, the second is D maj over Amaj, the 3rd is Em4 over G Maj? The forth is F#minor over A major. Brilliant. How he follows the 3rds and 5ths of the chord progression to give an ascending arppegio run for that solo! I don't know how Kirk ended up being a punch line. I think it's because the internet and a few bad performance videos on youtube. I've seen both bands play live (Megadeth with marty) and their performances were all great!

Most people don't know this but one of the key factors that makes Marty's sound unique is his strange right hand. The flexed curvature is basically a modified form of the rare Gypsy Jazz style picking, which was invented to create a louder, more aggressive pick attack. He leverages a massive downward pickslant and uses circular thumb picking to get around the string change issue (for example when the pick is below the string and he needs to move to the string above). You can't reach as much consistent speed output with Gypsy style picking as you can with traditional picking but you get MUCH more power. Think of it like the difference between an AK47 and a metronome. AK47 shoots extra fast and clean in short bursts but then soon gets out of control if you keep shooting without rest, but the sound is dynamic and powerful while a metronome maintains consistent high speed, but the sound is rather weak and mechanical.

You're fuckin' inspired mate. Loved that. I'm gonna try and learn your licks as practice for myself as a massive Tallica and Deth fan boy

I'm actually going to give the nod in both bands to Kirk Wah - as much as I love Marty Friedman, all that stuff clouded the Metallica songs and made them send cheezy - whereas the Kirk Wah parts didn't totally destroy the Megadeth stuff - I think Kirk's playing tends to actually accentuate the riffs that are happening underneath the solos, and the "wall of wah" further helps to take the solo out of the "overpowering the riffs" category. There's no doubt... Kirk Hammet is not a technically gifted guitar player (and there are areas in which he's straight-up incompetent lol), but all the same, he's a massively underrated lead guitarist. And in terms of unforgettable melodies that have entered the memory banks of millions of music lovers, he's got Friedman beat handily. I think Kirk shows how being a "better guitar player" doesn't make you a better guitarist. That said, I really feel like next to Dave himself, Friedman is the only lead guitar player who has done the amazing riffs of Megadeth any real justice - all of his replacements have been underwhelming beyond belief. So in that sweet spot where Friedman was in Megadeth, that was true metal alchemy and it probably has never gotten better than that guitar duo.

Yeah but I have to remember you, this guy is not Marty( obviously) so I'm pretty sure if it was the real Marty, it would've sounded better, I mean, he's a hell of a musician, not just a guitar player so don't you think he would figure out how to make his style fit with Metallica? I'm pretty sure he would.

The tone and style used for Marty are very reminiscent of his solo album Scenes.

“I get that, it’s just the notes in between that are FuCCiN wit me” - Kirk Hammett as he tries to learn Five Magics while Dave contemplates kicking Kirk out of the band.

Awesome style take, pretty spot on :)...... Marty did play the intro to jump in the fire for a few seconds and added a little solo with kerry King on a Japanese show
@bryanmagallan61264 жыл бұрын
Your playing is really good, when you do the hammett style lead you actually play in key and the Friedman stuff is great and you execute it well. With that being said if those guys actually played each other solos, the Metallica songs would have tasty phrasing with a good vibrato and the Megadeth songs would be filled with terrible note choices, crappy tone and awful vibrato.
