(Episode 67) Let's travel back to the 1940s to review the stories and wonderful women featured in Fiction House Comics. Cartoonist and business man Jerry Iger and artist Will Eisner partnered with pulp editor of Fiction House, Thurman T. Scott to create a comic book line. Featured on the pages were dazzling images of space heroines like Gale Allen and the Girl Squadron; Lyssa, Queen of Mars; Mysta of the Moon; and Futura. The Jungle action genre revealed characters like Sheena, Ann Mason, and the zebra-striped clad Camilla. Aviation comics presented agents Jane Martin; Dale and Suicide Smith; Sky Girl; and many more!
Legendary artists included in this video Joe Doolin, George Evans, Lee Elias, Maurice Whitman, Matt Baker, Bob Webb, John Celardo, and Bob Lubbers. Panel by panel these artists delivered stunning artwork month after month.
This episode does not feature Fight Comics' Tiger Girl and Senorita Rio and Ranger Comics' Firegirl and Fantomah. The Time Machine could only handle so much!

Time Machine. Hilarious. I don't remember Planet Comics but I do remember each funny book, as we called them at the time, was 52 pages of fun for a dime.

I have that wings comic with the Lubbers cover. It’s great. I have some original Lubbers art from robin Malone,x9,and the saint and I think it’s definitely some of the best good girl art I’ve seen. He did a strip called long Sam as well.

thanks, great review. I think it worth mentioning more on Leonard Starr, who went on to the "Big Leagues" of newspaper strips On Stage and reviving Little Orphan Annie.

Something tells me that this video will get a lot of hits from outside your usual base of subscribers! Which is great! Impressive collection of Fiction House comics Leo! These are usually above my budget, among the most expensive Golden Age books not produced by either DC or Marvel. * * * Will Eisner wrote and drew an amazing autobiographical graphic novel you might already know about, called the Dreamer, where he talks a lot about his Iger & Eisner studios days. It was basically a sweatshop, with rows of artists working like in an assembly line, producing pages after pages for some of the lowest pay in comics. Meanwhile, Eisner and Iger made a LOT of money packaging material for not only Fiction House, but also Fox and Quality Comics. In The Dreamer, Eisner talks about Jack Kirby, George Tuska , Bob Powell, and Lou Fine, but none of the other names you mention like Lee Elias, George Evans (great airplane artist), Matt Baker, or Joe Doolin. You would think that at least Matt Baker, a great artists, and one of the rare black man in comics at the time, would warrant a mention. I suspect that maybe these guys joined Iger's Studios after Eisner quit to start his Spirit comics strip? * * * I am jealous of your Nuka Cola tin sign as Fallout is my favorite video game franchise of all time.

Fiction House probably had the most GGA of any publisher. Thurmond would often send artwork back to the artist for revisions sighting that the artwork needed to be more sexualized. More headlights and cleavage. Great Planet Comics and study into their interiors.

Thank you for stopping by again! I am lucky I was able to grab a few over the years. But probably no more than for a long time. Thank goodness for reprints out there.

Futura was the first female space adventurer. She began as a distaff version of Flash Gordon. You can see the increasing influence of censorship in comics through Futura's costume. In hae first appearances she was clad in next to noting and nudity of ancilary characters was implied. By the time Futura's run in Planet Comics ended, she was clad in a longe demure blue dress, only allowed a bit of leg show. I cannot stress enough how scantily clad Futura was at the beginning, in some panels her clothing appears as little more than a suggestion.

Thank you for watching Eric! The football player on the cover of that 1947 Illustrated Football Annual was Texas Longhorn Bobby Lane, who eventually was drafted to the NFL by the Pittsburgh Steelers and had a 15 year career! The Jungle Comics #110 that I showed in the video, I purchased from your colleagues at Comic Book World when they were at FanExpo in Chicago last year!

Kaanga and Anne Mason are based on Ki-Gor and Helene Vaughn who were the stars of the Jungle Stories pulp.. In this case the pulp was better as Ki-Gor and Helene were better written. In the stories, Helene got naked on a regular basis or was forced to shed her leopard skin bikini by bad guys and bad gals. The best of the Ki-Gor stories are great wheras even the best Kaanga story is kind of flat.
