What if NASA had the US Military's Budget?

7 жыл бұрын

In this video we do a little speculating! What could NASA do with the US military's massive 600 billion dollar annual budget?
EDIT: Made a little mistake at 0:29...I pressed the greater than sign when it should be less than. My apologies!
Edit 2: I have also realized that I took NASA's budget percentage from the TOTAL United States annual budget, not the DISCRETIONARY budget like I used for the military. It's still a very small percentage, but I apologize nonetheless.

The only way NASA will get the military's budget, is if politicians found out aliens were communists with oil reserves.

Von Neely No, it wouldn't. NASA long ago departed from true improvisation and thinking outside the box. Private organisations are the ones which will do it, because they're driven by profit. NASA lost all sense of adventure by becoming obsessed with relatively trivial and 'safe' missions.
@Aureolelegends
@Aureolelegends 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, because every time they fail their funding is cut and all missions are put on hold for years at a time. Just look at the shuttle accidents. NASA has a lot of cool ideas and missions, but with a low budget it has to choose 1 out of a dozen proposals, and it always chooses the cheaper, more "safe" missions because otherwise it might get its funding cut again and put more lives at risk. And if an adventurous mission doesn't produce visible results, i.e. results that have immediately obvious benefits, the mission itself will be deemed a waste of time and they will told to pull out. So yes. NASA seems boring now, but it's still doing important (though not exciting in the public eyes) research. With a bigger budget however, that will change. Already, they have been given the mission to get to Europa by 2022 with a submarine (one of President Obama's last orders) with quite a significant amount of money attached.

Agreed, HG. NASA's management is full of red tape and very little in the way of thinking outside the proverbial box.

+MikelG00 ,The cultural globalization has already started a long time ago and the speed of its progress is only increased with inventions such as the internet. This is because physical distances and boundaries are becoming more and more irrelevant and different cultures are interacting with each other more and more closely, which means they inevitably share aspects of themselves between each others. I speculate that with enough time, assuming we haven't destroyed ourselves, different human cultures will have homogenized their cultural differences far enough so that they will no longer feel the need to remain as separate countries and will eventually unite all humankind in a single world encompassing government.

@@wladynoszhighlights5989a perfect example is our military budget. I watched a 60 minutes interview and an example was an oil switch NASA paid around $350 for but our military paid over $10k. Price gouging from monopolized corporations without oversight and most within the ranks were apart of it all. Its extremely bad how much fraud, waste, and abuse happens through the military budget which John Stewart brought attention to earlier this year.
@peanutbutterisfu
@peanutbutterisfu 6 ай бұрын
@@chamberlain85terrible example. If you watch that video the first problem is he shows 2 completely different parts they even have different part numbers likely completely different manufacturers because how different the part numbers are which change from company to company and the guy doesn’t show any invoices. Years ago there was an accusation about the military spending $600 on one hammer but in reality it was one order of a bunch of hammers. If someone was scamming they wouldn’t put one hammer for $600 or 1 oil switch for 10,000 if the switch really only costs a few hundred they would put 50 hammers and 50 oil switches so when someone sees the invoice they don’t think to look into it because it looks legit. You can’t believe everything because the media tells you and shouldn’t make a decision on something without taking everything into consideration.

Adam Lopez That isn't really an applicable argument to this complex of a situation. The world isn't that cut and dry, you wouldn't be able to determine such a complex response to an immensely multifaceted issue such as this. In addition the massive budget cut that would result from the Military Receiving NASA's funding would be so great that it would severely undermine any sort of maintenance required to keep even the most funded mental parts of the Military afloat. It's not just about creating more it's about maintaining what we have, and even if you are for a budget cut, which is a completely reasonable thing, one of this scale would have catastrophic impacts as we as a nation would be incapable of defending from almost any major nation and would be almost useless in providing aid to any allies of needed.

The problem is that if Country X (in this case the USA) wasn't so keen on wars, Country Y could become keen on wars and wipe the Country X out. Of course society is better for everyone when everybody simply trusts everybody, but society is worse for one side when it trusts someone that abuses that trust. Instead we just settle for a stalemate where everybody wastes money and manpower trying to conquer each other. It's the sad reality of human interactions. It parallels the prisoner's dilemma. Although the Cold War did get us to the moon, alongside both World Wars being massive leaps in human technology. Another answer to this question could be motivation, humans don't truly want knowledge; they want safety.

There's a rather bitterly cynical observation that many NASA employees make in their private conversations, saying: "Since 1969, no federal-level office-holder has won an election by telling the voters, 'I wanna give more money to NASA'." My father worked at White House Communications back in the late 70s and through most of the 80s. One of his supervisors had previously worked for NASA during the early 70s, at the end of the Apollo program and during the lag time between it's cancellation and the development of the STS. He knew of my interest in the space program, and once told me that if, for only one decade, the space program could be funded at a level just one-sixth that of the annual defense budget, NASA could fund multiple LEO space stations, a permanent lunar base, and be well on it's way to accomplishing a crewed mission to Mars. He said that the astronaut corps would number in the thousands, and several hundred would be involved in active space missions at any given time. In addition, NASA could launch and conduct a slew of robotic exploratory probes, landers, and rovers to the outer planets and their moons, along with research into next-generation propulsion systems, leaving chemical rockets behind in favor of nuclear-thermal, ion, and plasma-powered propulsion systems. Furthermore, (and here's the kicker) was that fully 50% of that one-sixth defense budget diversion would require nothing more than withholding payments to defense contractors that were chronically delinquent on their contract obligations.

Dinosaur 1978 how is Mars a not so good place to go to, yeah it’s a harsh environment, barely any trace of magnetic field, little to no atmosphere, but it has traces of water, ice in the poles, eventually when we have the technology we can terraform the planet. Maybe in the thousands of years later. Even then, Mars is the gateway to the outer planets and the asteroid belt, filled with lumps of rock rich in metals that we can extract to build more spacecraft, thus more missions or take it back to earth. It’s because Mars has a considerably lower gravitational pull than Earth, making rockets lighter and carry less fuel to escape the planet, or even then it could be replaced by electromagnet launchers.

It's because the US does not maintain a strictly defensive military like other countries do. Other countries tend to follow a logic of "be about as good as your enemy" to prevent invasions while at the same time not having to engage in a costly arms race. However the US follows a logic that is more like "be prepared to literally fucking anything", where anything includes invading the rest of the world and stomping everything. The US military is not defensive - it's a 'we can do whatever the fuck we want' statement to the rest of the world. My issue with this is that - besides the questionable political choice - it's a completely imaginary purpose for a military to have. The chances of that kind of power ever being needed or wanted are pretty much as close to zero as you can possibly get, kinda like that exponential fraction equation from high school; that makes it overall a waste of money in my view, especially because with the existence of nukes the kind of bully behavior that such a military would allow is not really possible against anyone but tiny countries for proxy wars... which do not require 8000 tanks anyways.
@arthurobrien7424
@arthurobrien7424 7 жыл бұрын
***** I need it. Because I'm not an US citizen and my country does not have a capable military. The US military *does* have a defensive purpose, it defends half of the world, and lessens the need for other states to militarize. A quote that sums it up really well I think is this: "[..]Because if we don't have them[nukes], then Japanese will start building them like Toyotas, and unlike North Koreas nuclear weapons *they will work*." Now what's easier, prevent nuclear war with 2 actors, or prevent nuclear war with 100 nuclear actors? Also, the US military acts preemptively, which is controversial, and probably should be, but supporting that policy can be rationally defended.

Not only that, kwazoo. The US spends a massive amount on space exploration. Those neat little graphics, with the helicopters and carriers? That's the same picture for space spending. The US spent, in 2014, more than the rest of the world combined on space exploration. Between the EU, Russia, China, Japan, and India, the only countries/organizations involved in manned space flight(I don't count the Azerbaijani Space Agency, for example), spent roughly 15.55 billion USD on their space agencies. The US, by comparison, spent *only* 17.6 billion dollars. We all like the EU, right? They're great for science, super tolerant, very progressive. They spend money in smart ways. As a percentage of GDP, in 2014, they spent .02%GDP on space. The US, on the other hand, spent .1%. 5 times the percent GDP spent on space. Still think the US doesn't spend enough on space? We can solidly place the US at the top of the list for dedication to space exploration by spending; why don't we scold literally any other country in the world, if we're looking to increase space funding? *note, Canada does have astronauts, but in saying the US spends more than the world put together on space, while I didn't count Canada in the global total, despite their being involved in spaceflight via other nation's programs, I figure the Canadians don't spend the couple billion dollars needed to tip the world's spending towards being higher than the US's.

Exactly. It's like the USA is playing a military-focus Civilization 6 game and they're putting 80% of funding on military buildings, improvements and units, but completely ignoring Science advancements in the Technology Tree. Meanwhile, other Civs are focusing on Science and Trade, while India is denouncing everyone so they can nuke everyone on the next turn. GG 2EZ, USA.
