Maybe more importantly - he would have likely been the one to flesh out Palpatine's dark side before the others on the council - who don't have that type of living force connection to see. Qui Gonn represented progressive values within the order. They shunned him because they were bogged down in a value system that was outdated and couldn't connect with the younglings they wish to train - thus many resisted or quit the order.
