A gas torus around a star could, if it were thick enough and young enough that it hadn't yet congealed into gas giants, hypothetically have enough pressure towards the core of the ring to support life. Watching this makes me think of how I figured out a way to describe how the sun works in much more simple terms. The sun is an incandescent light bulb. The bulb represents the boundary of the universe with vacuum inside and the filament is the sun, burning away until there is nothing left and it "pops". I get that it's not the perfect analogy, but when you think about it, the sun is just a really big light bulb :D
