The thing about the one that killed the dinosaurs was that it basically hit the perfect spot on the planet. Where it hit had a high concentration of something (sulfur? Idk, can’t remember), and it all shot up into the atmosphere, starting the ice age. Pretty similar to what you’re saying, but I do remember someone saying that where it hit was a big factor.

Impact winters as described in this video would be caused by medium sized asteroids like the one that hit at the end of the cretaceous. Vesta is another story entirely: reentering ejecta and the plume of vaporized rock released by the impact would release enough heat to mostly or entirely boil Earth's oceans, blanketing the world in a hellish atmosphere of rock vapor and supercritical steam more than twice as thick as Venus's. The crust and upper mantle would be peeled away around the impact point. The rock vapor would eventually condense and rain out but the oceans would take thousands of years to reform. The entire surface would be hit with supersonic wind blast and ejecta, subjected to rock-melting temperatures for months or years, and finally subjected to immense amounts of erosion from the entire ocean's worth of water raining out of the atmosphere all at once. The coastlines of the planet would be unrecognizable in the aftermath, not to mention that depending on the impact location a continent could be split into fragments or literally gone: the estimated crater diameter is about 4,000 km, large enough to erase Australia or Antarctica or turn Africa or either of the Americas into multiple small continents even without resurfacing outside the crater.

Kobi I'm surprised you didn't use actual video of Vesta. I'm sure you know that wasn't Vesta in the video. The actual Vesta is almost spheroid in a rough way and may have actually been spheroid before it was hit at its south pole by something large creating the huge Rheasilvia crater. It's structured like the terrestrial planets but much smaller.

While I don’t know a lot about science, it’s always been interesting to me. I took electives in high school, mainly in science, not normally seen as electives. During my school days, we theorized what killed dinosaurs, were scientists crazy to believe in black holes or have inspired thinking, and why man wouldn’t ever explore Mars (headway was made in my senior year). Over half century later, looking at the largest asteroid craters, it was believed that the Vredefort Crater formed by a 15k, revised now to 20-25 k asteroid. Vesta is hundreds of times larger. So wouldn’t the impact immediately create a continent size hole measuring thousands of km in diameter at depths of hundreds of times deeper? Is there a simple math formula to estimate size and depth depending on size, estimated weight, and speed traveled? Is it big enough to change the planets axis? As a non science oriented person, I can’t see any type of simple answer and I absolutely love this question. In fact, it’s my favorite science question of the year, and we’ve had tons of great science questions every year for decades.

Yeah if Vesta is large enough that if it hit it would peel the crust. There would be no tsunamis the earth would be molten slag the oceans would boil and the impact would cast large amounts of debris into space which would rain down further heating it.

Fun Fact: We don't actually know at what velocities an asteroid would race at earth. It's really determined by whether the asteroid is racing towards it's periapsis which would result in increasing velocities or just slowing down moving towards it apoapsis and it is determined at what point does it rendezvous with earth or at what angle which we sometimes may know. But these predictions are a 50/50 possibility 🗿🍷. I mean like the solar flare in 2012 missed us by a few million kilometres it should've hit according to predictions.
