Yeah, but why? Why oceans are so deep?
@sigisoltau60736 ай бұрын
@@oldi184Well, the oceans lie on oceanic crust. There are two types of crust, continental and oceanic crust. Continental crust is made of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rock and has an average density of about 2.7 tons per cubic meter.. Oceanic crust is made of igneous rock, primarily basalt, and has a density of 2.9 tons per cubic meter. This means that because oceanic crust is denser than conventional crust, it lies deeper, and the oceans fill these deeper basins.

If she sank in deep water, most aboard would never have even reached the weather decks before drowning in their cabins or below decks. Water would have rapidly flooded passenger areas, engineering spaces from above as well as though the breaches in the hull. Even worse those who jumped into the water would find water surging into the ship through windows, down stairwells, the funnel, ventilation and elevator shafts a deadly menace. When Titanic sank, scores of people in the water were sucked down into the ship and drowned. The funnels left 25-foot wide holes into which water swirled, pulling people all the way down into the boiler rooms. It would have been no different if Costa Concordia sank in deep water. I think also the ship would have broken apart if it took an extreme downward angle by the bow. Large open areas in the decks inside are where stresses converge, and cracks start radiating from. In fifteen seconds or less, they can break a ship into two or more pieces while on the surface or just below it.

Have _Costa Concordia_ and _Titanic_ switch places, and so many more aboard _Costa Concordia_ would have died, and the ship would have been lost for many years while salvagers attempted to find her. Meanwhile, more people would have been saved from _Titanic_ due to the ability to use the lifeboats to ferry passengers to the shore. Even if _Costa Concordia_ and _Lusitania_ or _Britannic_ swapped placed, more people would have died on _Costa Concordia_ . Simply starting the evacuation as soon as Engineering declared the ship 'lost' would have saved so many people, perhaps everyone. Unfortunately, Schettino remained in denial for far too long, and over 30 people paid the price with their lives.

30 seconds after the collision, the primary engines (that power the rudder and the propulsion) were gone offline, and the ship was moved only by the wind and currents of the sea. LUCKILY they pushed the ship towards the shore, but the ship touched the sea floor only something like 30 minutes after the collision (it was close to the coast, but not close enough and the wind and currents were still nearly parallel to the coastline, so it took time to get to a shallow enough zone). If the wind had pushed the ship AWAY from the coast, things would have gone very differently.
