For those who are wondering why sp many dragons were spawning: whenever the ender dragon leaves the main end island, a new dragon gets spawned. Here, whenever a new dragon spawns, it immediately enters the nether, a new dragon spawns and it repeats

That dragon looked so at home there in the nether. Also what a wonderful way those portals could work, would love to be able to see into the other dimension like that.

The see-through portals is thanks to the Immersive Portals mod. I've used it before and is really cool, but can screw up rendering on some cards. The same mod also adds actual mirrors by lighting glass blocks with flint and steel.

just a guess but i'm pretty sure what's happening is since during the end fight, the game does a check for the ender dragon to make sure it's there unless the player removes it-- i guess to counteract any glitches where it just somehow despawned/ glitches out. so, when the dragon goes to the nether, it's obviously not in the end anymore, so the game spawns another. right near the portal. so it goes through, the process repeats, and now you have a bunch of dragons spawning around the portal and flying in and out. very cool.

I think you're right, and it counteracts this way because if the Ender Dragon suddenly dissapears or is somehow defeated without the player then the achievement is never unlocked and without it you can't respawn the Ender Dragon

This guess isn't true. Look at the sub min Minecraft speedrun with TAS. There, one way of beating the game was not spawning the dragon in the first place. Which if true, this means OP's guess is wrong.

For people who want to know what the hell happened, ender dragons not naturrally spawned / moved like with immersive portals, go straight to coordinates x 0 y 0 but the nether - end portal is there. the initial dragon keep teleporting apparently causing duped ones probably because mod issues / chunk loading issues. Thats my theory

@Adrir Actually, I've seen it with Cubfan on hermitcraft (season 4, I believe). And I've experienced it myself in my own world, when trying to get all end gateways activated. And as soon as the chunk containing the duplicated dragon was loaded, this one would attempt to return to 0/0.

Iirc Ray's Works once used end gateways as part of his enderdragon XP farm, and they teleported the dragon without issue

It would be neat to see him experiment with the three types of gateways. (If you don't know what I mean, here's a quick summary) Type 1: Spawns on the end island, and teleports you to a Type 2 gateway. Type 2: Spawns on the inner ring of the outer islands, and teleports you back to its linked Type 1 gateway. Type 3: Spawns everywhere (except the main end island), and teleports you back to the obsidian entry platform. If you don't kill the dragon the game will spawn a new one to prevent unfinishable games, but won't despawn the previous dragon, therefore rapid duplicates are made

So the easiest way to explain this that when it went through the portal it duplicates due to the fact that the free the end achievement has not occurred in this world, This actually almost happened in one of dream’s manhunts when the hunters used end crystals to respawn a dragon that had not been killed.

The free the end achievement doesn't have to occur? For example if you use beds or crystals or respawn anchors or dispensed tnt (player lit tnt still counts as a player attack) the free the end achievement wont happen but the dragon is still defeated.

That happens because The End has a rule that forces the dragon to either be killed or spawn a new one. If it isn't detected in The End, it checks if it died, and if not, just spawns a new one.
