Scenario idea: "Klein Venedig" Since King Charles V of Spain had debts to owe to the an independent city in the Holy Roman Empire (called Augsburg, and lead by the house of Welser), he granted them colonial rights to Venezuela, and it was more of the North west of it, with its capital being Santa Ana de Coro (but that's not very German so let's change it to Neues Augsburg), this colony was founded to find the mythical "El Dorado", but that's, well, *MYTHICAL*, it failed, and since the Augsburg family kept arguing with the Spanish government, after Charles's death, they took their colonial rights away. What if Klein Venedig, instead of fading into history through the Spanish taking their land back, succeeded as a German Colony?

Why would the German tribes need, or even want, to invade the WRE, there would be no pressure from the east this time around.
@Roca005
@Roca005 6 жыл бұрын
tallthinkev they were having too many children. They were always ready to expand east, west, and south. They could not expand east for obvious reasons, so they expanded west and south. The north did not have much land for agriculture. The angles, saxons, and jutes to Britannia The Franks, Visigoths, and Lombards to Galia The Vandals, Suaves, and Visigoths to Hispania. The Suaves, Lombards, and Alemani to Italia. Gaul became Frankia or France! Britannia became England! The rest of the region remained under Celtic control. Hispania became the Visigoths Kingdom of Spain, which included south-western France and Portugal. Capital in Toulouse and then Toledo. And the Italian peninsula, as the German lands, became small independent city states. It also became the Papal States. Not until the 19th century did the peninsula join to form Italy. And not until the late 19th century did the German States join. Of course, Austria was already a great empire by then. The Vikings raided Western Europe for the same reason. Too many children and not many natural resources or land for agriculture. That is the same reason why Germans and Italians, and Scandinavians moved to the Americas in the 19th and 20th century.

Yeah, I think he's a bit too blase about WRE still falling. The Germans all invaded at once, not just because of the Huns but because they perceived Roman weakness. Without the initial domino tipping over, I don't see why the WRE HAS to fall. This was still early on in the split, no reason an Imperial marriage coudn't reunite the halves later on down the road even.

I really enjoyed this video. The period of late antiquity is one I find absolutely fascinating, and your interest and knowledge of Roman history makes for some fantastic content. Two things which you didn't address which I find interesting in this period were the cooling, drying climate which reduced the agricultural productivity of Roman lands and the plague of Justinian, the combined force of which depopulated Europe severely and led to the social conditions which allowed feudal society to dominate the middle ages. I'm curious if a cooling climate alone would have been enough to disrupt the Germanic tribes such that they invaded Rome and Rome enough that they would still fall without the invasion of the Huns. I'm also curious if the lack of Byzantine wars for reconquest, or the probably reduced scale of such invasions would have allowed the plague to be as devastating as it was.

What if alexander did not die in India and continued to expand his empire
@eyuin5716
@eyuin5716 6 жыл бұрын
I doubt he would have gotten very far. There are 3 main circumstances we have to consider carefully. Alexander's empire was vastly overstretched at this point and to big for him to maintain if he continued expansion. Also coupled with the fact of the unforgiving terrain which separated India from Persia and the fact that the Nanda Empire military were no pushovers would have made it very hard for even Alexander to realistically invade and maintain the subcontinent.

@SxVaNm345
@SxVaNm345 6 жыл бұрын
Long comment; I very much doubt that Alexander would be able to conquer beyond the Indus Valley, but let's suppose he did. India would be a mixture of Western/Greek & Eastern/Dharmic Culture. India would probably became a brilliant cosmopolitan bastion of enlightenment, With Eastern & Western values/innovations united. Also, The Greek, and Western Roman World would have incorporated many Indian achievements into their settlements, and empires. Science, and progress would develop rapidly faster, and philosophical religions would be a blend of interacting cultures. The Industrial Revolution may have begun in the Roman world, and India may be one of the first places to become industrialized. India would also be more Abrahamic then it is now. Instead of at 18 percent, it may be close to 45 - 50, and may develop a Judeo-Dharmic society within the Subcontinent. If European Colonialism happened, Maybe India would get a piece of terrority in the New World. Within this East-West unification, Celto-Germanic Kingdoms, & Southeast Asian Trading Hubs would become part of this wider Judeo-Hindu world culture.

He would probably conquer Carthage and Arabs which was prosperous from trading and he would appoint a heir when he’s old so his empire won’t collapse into successor states which weaken the Greek (or Macedonian) influence in Asia Minor and the Middle East through countless infighting and allowing the Romans and Persian to take advantage of its weakness

You read some really bad sources about Indian history across all your videos, I keep noticing. Gupta Empire wasn't a "collection of kings sending tribute to a weak emperor just waiting to be invaded" though. It was actually really well organized, and essentially controlled entire India in two ways - directly governed the north with a centralized bureaucracy (that existed until early 6th century AD), and nominal but closely controlled vassal kingdoms covering the entire southern area (the biggest one being Vakataka kingdom). The "tributaries" you mention existed in the form of colonies in Southeast Asia and tribal kingdoms in Himalayas and modern Myanmar. Pretty much same as what Mughal Empire did until 1590s - directly controlling only the northern heartland region and turning the rest into vassals, at least until they began directly annexing the vassal kings in 1630s. Guptas weren't militarily weak either. They actually managed to defeat the Hunas at first (repeatedly in fact, under Emperor Skandagupta). The thing is, every emperor after that was weaker than the previous one, creating warlordism and rebellions (first to go were the vassals in the south, followed by various governors). By the end of 5th century, the emperor was essenitally a hostage in his own palace. The final defeat of the Huna invaders in India (mid-6th century AD) came at the hands of Yashodharman, the Gupta governor of Avanti province (Malwa), who led the Gupta army on behalf of Emperor Vishnugupta. That man was a governor and subject in name, but in reality he had grown powerful enough to declare himself a king in his own right and eventually separated away like rest of the warlords. And even in this era, in their final years, the Gupta Empire controlled a considerable portion of eastern India (as inscribed by Yashodharman himself on Mandsaur Prashasti pillar). This era isn't badly documented either. There is loads of manuscripts from writers of the late Gupta empire era. The actual lack of sources comes in the "dark ages" of the post-Gupta era, until the rise of Pushyabhuti-Chalukya imperial diarchy when large scale writing resumes.

Calling Gupta Empire Badly documented is true only in English. There are more texts about Guptas in Sanskrit, Prakrit and Tamil than those about greece, they just have not been translated. Even in post gupta era, during the tripartite struggle era or Prithviraj era was also fully documented. Only after 1100 AD documentation was poor from native sources.

Americans have more English ancestry than they realize. I feel recent home DNA tests are revealing this. But it also isn't sexy to say your ancestry is English, so people will say they are whatever other "more colorful" bit might be in their bloodline. This is especially true with people calling themselves Irish (which I suspect is greatly overestimated), but is also true of people just flat out making up romantic storylines for their family, like that they are descended from brave Cherokee warriors or some such (Elizabeth Warren, anyone?). This is a side issue to the discussion about Huns, but since it was mentioned I thought I'd give my take.

Without the Xiongnu, the independent hellenic realms in Bactria and India formed by Greeks would have stuck around a bit longer, as the Kushans/Yuezhi were driven from their homes in western China and into the Ili valley by the Xiongnu. It was here that the Yuezhi then drove out eastern scythian peoples, or Saka, who would destroy the Greco Bactrian kingdom and form the Indo-Scythians and Northern and Western Satraps.

Kushans were the ancient Tocharians(Extinct Indo European people). Chinese sources call them Yeuzhi and wanted to ally with them against the Xiangnu. Indian sources call the Kushans as Tusharas, and they're super important for defeating the Scythians(Shaka). The Defeat of scythians by Kushan king marks as the 1st date of the Hindu/Buddhist calender, Vikram Samvat/Bikram Sambat. Without the Kushans, India would still be under scythian domination. Also, Gautum Buddha was most likely of Scythian origin. Also, it's possible Kushans weren't the ones to defeat the Shaka, and indigenous kings defeated them, but we really don't know for sure.

0:50 White is often associated with the compass for the steppe peoples, White=East and Blue=West. The White Horde of the Mongol Empire (aka the Golden Horde by the Russians) and the Blue Horde which controlled the East. So the White Huns could have simply been the Western Huns and it would follow suit that the Eastern Huns could be called the Blue Huns. But this is simply speculation. However, the Huns like the Mongols followed the Tengri faith and shared the same homeland, along with the Turks, so it is quite possible that the White Huns were Huns.

You are wrong about slavs. At that time they never were so far north. Migrations into modern north-western Russia happened later than this timeline. Historical cradle of slavs are North-eastern slopes of Carpathian mountains. Modern western Ukraine, and South-eastern Poland. From this territory slavs migrated in three directions later on. In the north there were mostly finno-ugric tribes, not slavic ones. Goths indeed were on those territories, but they coexisted with slavs and maybe in some way forced them to migrate further east, but I don't think that it was so far east at that period. Slavs basically lived in the wast forest chain from Carpathians to maybe about north of Belarus.

There's a new theory that Xiong-Nu's language belonged to the Yenisien family in Siberia. There's another theory that connects the Yenisien family to NA-Dene family of the Americas, in a single family known as Dene-Yenisien. IF all of these are true, Huns are basically related to Native americans.

I like these videos...and to plunge into alternate timeline type things r awesome...the huns not being around...i have studied history a lot myself...i went to college for history....love it!!! I have always loved the roman and greek civilizations...along with american history given im from WV in america....anyway no huns id say 1 thing people would jump to real fast would be the fall of western rome....it was not just the huns that led to that and i believe it woulda came to an end in the west anyway...it may have helped west rome hold out a lil longer and east rome/byzantine would last a lil longer possibly....but the huns were a very deadly enemy to western rome...but FAR from their only enemy...they had fought with the german people for soooo long...by the time of the fall of western rome....rome and their excellent war machine they had built was bein fought a lot by germans who fled...and the huns r 1 reason....so no huns....be no reason to attempt peace...i say attempt cause the emperor in western rome granted the Germans under...i cant remember his name....i think he is the 1 who helped raise alaric...the germanic leader who sacked rome...it was the leader before alaric....armenius was a huge threat...he and his brother were raised up roman...and went into the military and went to war with their people...armenius' brother was ok with it but not armenius...plus when granted to cross the danube...roman military commanders REALLY took advantage of the germans....which is 1 thing that led to alaric sacking rome years later!!! So no huns...rome most likely wouldnt have had as many of the germans in there armies....so that means even more war in germania....which rome had been trying to conquer for a very long time....so im saying without the huns and the threat from Attila especially....wouldnt been an army with a lot of Germans in it...instead the huge bulk of their warriors in germania wouldnt have fled....into rome...and got screwed....then started helping the roman military against the huns...and the germans were always the 1st to be put in danger...basically im saying that with even more germans fighting against them....plus the germanic people had some great leaders in those days....alaric...armenius...the shepherd guy who waged a guerilla war basically.... they woulda stayed in germania and never been seperated from their homeland and people....so western rome would have still fell...they may have held out a lil longer...maybe...they still may fell close to when they did cause a lot of it was internal strife in the west and the east and constantinople had been the real roman power left...they moved the capitol to constantinople...they also had the vandals attacking the roman held north africa and basically that leader...cannot remember his name...took carthage and made his own lil kingdom down there...so ima say no huns...west rome may have held up....50 to 100 years longer than the normal timeline with the huns and attila....great video

6:00- Yeah, germans occupied many more lands in the east but Slavs have always been in Belarus, northern Ukraine and a patch of eastern Poland. Germans did not move away from the mountains further than 500km because the forests were difficult to navigate. The Slavs were most west on the Bug River in eastern Poland and stretched to the Smolensk gate. This map is wrong, because the Slavs were a bay of ocean of steppes in settled europe. Slavs are tribes of Neuri, a of branch of the Sarmatians who went along the Dnieper River to the north and further north lived the Balts then known as Androphags who separated themselves from the Slavs, not the Slavs from them.

There was no such thing as the Indian Dark Ages. The Kannauj Triangle followed the Gupta Empire collapse. This period so continued economic prosperity with the Great patronising of the arts and science in universities such as Nalanda, Vikramashila and Odantapuri. The great cities of Kannauj and Malkhed were built during this time. The Gupta Empire actually defeated the Huns. The Empire collapsed due to flooding of thousands of cities across the Gangetic plains.

I read somewhere that Hungary is a fusion between Huns and the Greek word "Oungroi " (from Old Bulgarian "ągrinŭ" which is in turn from Oghur Turkic "Onogur ") this was the name of tribal confederacy under Bulghars who Magyars were part of before reaching the Pannonian basin. So perhaps Hungary would be called "Oungaria or Ongaria".
