The NBA is looking for ways to raise money after being hit by the pandemic and an easy way to do that would be expanding the league from 30 to 32 teams. This video chooses which cities get an NBA franchise and how an expansion draft would go down. Every current team would get to protect three players so a lot of talented guys would be up for grabs. The big headlines are that Russell Westbrook goes back to the city that drafted him and Gordon Hayward headlines the other expansion team as their first pick.

They have a rule in place where teams can protect 8 players on their roster if an expansion draft happens. And expansion teams can only pick 1 player per team. Idk how you could even make a good team out of that, but it would be interesting

I think the proximity to Orlando is a problem. Orlando is one of the smallest franchises and I can't imagine they would be happy with another central Floridian team taking share of their media market. I also don't know how much long term upside value it presents for the league because of the previous point, and older demographics of the Tampa area.

If this happens, realistically the teams will protect between 5 to 8 players. The reason is these teams have worked hard to built these rosters and not let just pick up their full rotation. Besides, teams now have more talent and a lot deeper compared to where the NBA made expansions back in 88 and 95. So these expansions teams will get quality talent by just choosing from the 9th rotation onwards.

My question is, if two teams that are definitely in the West get added, whose getting moved East? The Pelicans and Grizzlies because they're the easternmost teams? One thing I would say about expansion though. As much as I love the NBA I feel like instead of expansion we actually need contraction. It'd be better parody instead of having good players waste their good years in limbo. Everyone would be better. The league is already sort of watered down as is and in my opinion with the ratings its in danger of becoming like baseball which has not been helped by expansion. As far as money goes tv contracts which are alot of the money in the nba wont be going up so it would be more pieces of the pie to split between owners and teams so is it really making more money. Imagine if the league went down to 24 or 26 teams. Instead of splitting the tv money 30 wats now its 24 or 26. Those teams and owners would immediately get more money in hand. Just a thought playing devils advocate if you will
