At 45:11 I think the reason brutality doesn't kill is because the gumball relic gives you 1 hp every time a card deals damage, even if it's not towards an enemy. I'm not 100% sure, but that's what it looks like to me.

Modder here to say essentially this, but explain the reason behind it. So there's a few different "damage sources" in STS, one of those is "attack damage" (think strike) and one of those is "non-attack damage" (think charon's ashes, or Juggernaut) HOWEVER, typically, effects like Charon's ashes don't count as *your* damage, just damage that happens to be dealt to an enemy, and effects like Juggernaut are counted as "non-attack damage" and therefore don't proc things like thorns, despite it being coded that the player is the damage's source. Additionally, the gumball is coded to test for the damage's *source* rather than whether an attack was played (I am 99% confident, despite not being this mod's coder). It also seems to have glossed over whether the damage is considered "attack damage". This means that effects like Brutality, which do damage to you, but consider you the source of the damage both heals and hurts you. Why it doesn't kill in the instance of having 1hp remaining is likely because of the "action resolve" system, telling the game to resolve the relic's heal before the power's damage "effect chain" is resolved, in the code, there are two different ways to add effects, one being "AddToTop" and one being "AddToBottom", I believe the error is that it was added to the top so it resolves first, but it may also be that it tries to resolve the entire chain before determining if the character dies. (this could be hard coded in base game to account for relics like Lizard Tail and Tungsten Rod) Going even further, I believe the modder may have decided to check for the damage's source rather than if an attack type card was played because they wanted the relic to heal you for as many enemies as you hit in the case of aoe, and just didn't realize the consequences of that. (For perspective, to try and code it to heal you properly without cutting that corner, you'd probably have to check for the number of actors in the fight, if the card is aoe, if the card is multihit, and then determine how many of said enemies lost HP once the card's effect chain resolved, and once more to make sure that the enemies that lost HP lost HP due to an attack damage source and not an anonymous source. It doesn't sound like a very simple or fun problem to work through, in their defense.) This is essentially also the difference between The Guardian's "Bronze Scales" effect and the thorns buff. Since it's the only character in its fight, I've not seen it tested, but I would bet if you added other characters to the fight with the Guardian and targeted a different enemy with said attack, you would still be dealt damage equal to The Guardian's Bronze Scales. Sorry for Essaying, it just popped up in the video (Yeah I'm months late RIP) and I'm confident I know the reason behind the wonky mechanic, so I wanted to share because I figure some people might appreciate the information :D

The Ooze on its own would be OP. But as an upgradd that replaces Ectoplasm it seems fine. Since you need to first take Ectoplasm Id guess and then hope you find the Esoteric Ooze. And even if youre guaranteed to find Ooze in some fashion youd still be taking 2 relics basically to get it. So would you trade two other relics to be able to gain max hp instead of gold and spend hp at shops? Maybe, but way more balanced than the Ooze as a single relic, and makes it an actual question of if its worth it, let alone taking Ectoplasm and hoping you get it.

Yeah, I think all the "Mysterious Evolutions" of Boss Relics are pretty strong for that reason. Not sure if they're well balanced, but I'm pretty sure that's the thought process, especially since you normally you have to take the first one without any guarantee that you'll see the 2nd. Much stronger in boss swap cases like this, though.
