I like how Rock-Grass-Bug represents Rock Paper Scissors really well. Rock gets covered by paper (paper is like grass type), paper gets cut by scissors (x-scissor for example is bug type move) and rock crushes scissors

Also, I had this idea for a Fairy, Steel, and Fighting type, starter combination. A Parakeet, evolving into a Cockatiel, into a Macaw. It starts out flightless, but gets the Flying type as it evolves. The Steel type would be a cat, with a bell, which is interesting, since there was plans for one in gen 2. All it needs is a final evolution, and it's good. The Fighting type would be a dog, based off a German Shepard. As it evolves, it's fur changes to black and white, and it's eyes would become dichromatic, red and blue .

I recall this being experimented with in Kalos with the Fighting/Dark/Psychic types, but I feel that there is definitely a way it could have been better executed. I'll use the 6 Kalos dual types in a more proper example (Pay no mind to stats, etc. with example). (EX: Delphox, Poliwrath, Shiftry). I propose these 3 particular 'mons as an example to a perfect dual-triangle because the advantage/disadvantage triangles are mirrored which allows for no 100% advantage in the battle.

Another pretty good trio could be Flying-Electric-Ground Instead of resistances to one another, it’s immunities (except electric-flying, that doesn’t quite work) which could be a unique way to encourage newer players to either catch more Pokémon, or use coverage moves, since your big Main attacks won’t do anything to the opponent’s starter.

An idea I had for starters would be to use Dragon, Ghost, and Steel, and instead of your rival picking the one that's good against you, they actually get the exact same one as you, since Dragon and Ghost are both good against themselves. Steel is bad against itself, but this would emphasize that its main thing is resisting so many types. And these are kind of the three "ultimate" types - Dragons are strong, Ghosts can be hard to deal with because they're immune to Normal, and Steel again has its ridiculous number of resistances. They're types that generally don't appear until later in the game, so having them to start with would definitely mix things up.

What I want to see is them take advantage of the two version approach to the start of each Gen by making one more beginner friendly and one targeted more to veterans of the series. With that difference, they can have their cake and eat it too: do the classic starter types for the “beginner friendly” version and a new type triangle for the “veterans” version. Beginners get something easy to understand, veterans get a breath of fresh air, and in general they can easily hype the Gen by emphasizing six different starters across both games. Maybe in the postgame you could even get one starter from the other versions starting trio so you’re not missing out on either trio entirely. Be curious what you guys think though.

I have always thought of starter Pokemon as Pokemon that a young person, or a kid or a novice trainer could get and raise relatively easily. It would be strong, but not too strong as to overpower everything, and its temperament and looks would be easygoing. It's final forms though are the complete opposite. Tough, foreboding and a symbol of how far you've come as a trainer.
