the reason why some surface areas don’t work against GWater is because Garry didn’t have the time to fix Surface areas making the water fall straight to the void.

I think it is because the surfaces the water doesn't collide with are Displacements, they're calculated in a different way in hammer compared to normal world brushes.

It would be difficult but this is a good start, making water simulations is all about two things. The function of water which can be best pulled off by voxels in specific sizes depending on the result you want and all of that without too much lag, and the final part would be to just make it look good, it doesn't have to actually have to be perfectly like water but instead by caring about certain points and things like that and adding in maybe some kinds of junk animation based on if a piece of water moves plus some changes in how textures project on the water it could look really convincing as water. So yeah this is cool

im friends with the creators and ive tested it a couple of times and about the external software, theres no flex (physics engine) implementation built in gmod so you do have to install that

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone using an external physics engine before. Is the creator "Mee" on youtube or is that just another lad showcasing your friend's mod? Either way impressive shit, I know how hair pulling Gmod can be at times.

We've been also working into fixing the collisions between the water and map, so the water wont fall through the world anymore :D

it'd run pretty badly but if the mod could convert the particles to a mesh each water update that would look much better. I am thinking of the portal 2 gels system, some adaptation of that so it wouldn't need to be remade from scratch.

If they could do that vector process thing (I forget the name) where essentially the particles would be surrounded by low poly "spheres" that would merge vertexes when close to each other, making it look more like actual water (Valve already sort of did this with the Blob entity)

unfortunately the technology as a whole for this kind of stuff is still in its infancy and is being figured out, so i doubt this mod can actually improve a whole lot unless some big breakthroughs are made 2 Minute Papers has a lot of videos on water physics simulations that are pretty interesting little videos, and you can stay up to date on all kinds of graphics technology by watching them (not just water, but smoke, weather effects like wind, fabric, etc etc) :D

Also the source engine is like 20 years old so it's not too great for super advanced physics simulations (it was groundbreaking at the time though)

@@icarus2k Source Engine uses Havok physics, which to this day is still pretty much considered a gold standard in real-time physics simulations. albeit, Source Engine does not use the most-recent version of Havok physics, but even to this day the nearly 20 year old version of Havok it does use is still considered to be like, the most minimal standard for physics you can get, which is imo a pretty good achievement. even almost 20 years later, that version of Havok physics is still considered good enough that its a standard. a low standard, but a standard.

I can't wait until we actually have realistic simulated water in games that you can play around with, like making channels in the ground for it to go through or like draining an ocean. The reason why we still haven't seen realistic fluid dynamics is because liquid physics are one of the hardest things to simulate and is only really used for testing super computers and how fast they are. But one can dream for the day when realistic water is a thing in games.
