TERRAFORMING A SMALL PORTION OF MARS IN A DOME: Hi, I have been an environmental researcher since 1969. I discovered a method for growing grass on the surface of radioactive Uranium Mine tailings at Rio Algom Limited in Elliot Lake Ontario. ( confirmed). Grass can be grown on the surface of the planet Mars. I need Elon's help to conduct an experiment. Grass produces oxygen, for example, 50 sq feet of grass will produce enough oxygen for one person to breathe clean air. An airtight glass or plastic dome can be erected on the Mars surface, where grass will be planted where one person can dwell. Enough grass planted in this domed environment will create enough breathing oxygen to keep one person alive. A dome twice the size will allow two people to survive.

Venus is a good option. It would be best to tow it into Earth's orbit so it leads us, for easier commuting, and increases its spin so its days are the same length. It would also be visible in the sky if close enough as another earth. Eventually, you could build a whole chain of them. You would need to completely recondition the atmosphere and seed it with Earth's flora and fauna. It would take an entire army of robots, but I think the first step would be to move it and spin it up. The closer it is the easier it would be to exploit.

Ok, I understand and I admit that the idea of terra forming a planet to make it habitable for humans is a noble and aspiring idea. Earth is precious yet unique in that it has a magnetic field to shield us from solar radiation. Otherwise our atmosphere would be blown away into space. We don't have the means or technology to create a magnetic field for a planet. That type of technology is hundreds of years away, at the very least. What is the purpose of trying to create an atmosphere suitable for humans, when it's just going to be stripped away. Instead we should concentrate on preserving the only planet we have capable of sustaining human life. It's all we have for now, and it should be our priority to preserve it's habitable atmosphere for human life. Obviously, Earth will continue to exist for billions of years, with or without us.

The idea of terraforming planets sounds crazy and highly unrealistic. We're already struggling to take care of our own planet, with so many toxic and polluted areas and massive damage to nature. And now we're considering taking on other planets? Let's face it - our species is meant for Earth. These other planets probably have their own ecosystems and species, just like us. We shouldn't interfere with them. Instead, why don't we focus on ensuring humanity's future survival and prioritise the protection and care of our planet? It would make much more sense.

that question is about as pointless as asking what if we terraformed the sun

@@andy-the-gardener Not the company. It's a megastructure named after a guy called Freeman Dyson. The original concept is actually a swarm of sattelites around a star (now called a Dyson Swarm), but popularly it's now used to refer to what is essentially one giant artificial planet, with a hollow interior and a star as its core, where people live on the inside of it. You basically have to disassemble all of the planets, moons and asteroids in the star system to build it, but it is doable under known physics.
