Two part answer I heard for this, one of which is covered by the video: 1. Control. Because of how much toxic stuff you'd be putting up in the atmosphere with this, environment contamination and the potential for unpredictable consequences such as an eruption, it's just not a great idea to do it; 2. Logistics. In a similar way that shooting trash into space is just too expensive to even consider, dragging trash to the top of a volcano also is just too expensive in comparison to almost any other alternative. Even if you had say, a land level volcano to throw stuff isolated in some uninhabited place so it doesn't poison people around, you are still poisoning the atmosphere, the environment around it, and it'd still be too costly to use because of how isolated it is. Trash burning facilities, or waste-to-energy plants is the way to go for this and they've been around and heavily optimized for a while now, with filtration systems for the worst pollutants, and a whole ton of control not to spew out dangerous stuff... countries like Japan that don't have much land for landfills (they still have, but it's understandably strained), burn a whole ton of their non-recyclable trash in facilities like those. Some of them are located right in the middle of cities, with people around unaware of it. Just understand though, it's still far better to reduce, reuse and recycle... and for non-recyclables, a properly managed landfill system is likely still better than burning stuff up. Gradual and natural decomposition is better for the environment in general and does not require a ton of energy to happen.

I remember reading somewhere that a 1x1x1 mile hole would be enough for a huge amount of trash. The problems are more complicated though. The big one is transporting it all there, which would be an astronomical undertaking of logistics and cost a fortune. Another would be the heat and methane generated by anaerobic decomposition. Then even if you layered it with dirt from the excavation you'd have _so many scavengers._ Also the health risks of being around such a huge amount of garbage. On the upside you could have an enormous processing plant to sort out all of the metals. You run all that crap through a grinder to break it up, magnet out all the iron, let the other heavy stuff settle out by using a sluice or some such, and then sift through the heavy stuff for valuable metals. That'd make for a lot of jobs, too, and since it's all in one place you can do it all on a massive scale. Alternatively, you could use robots that can scan for metals and have them flick it into a side trough and then humans could pick through that. You could also separate out all the plastics; recycling plastics turns out to be terrible in practice, but making sure it stays out of the ecosystem would be a huge plus.

Isn’t there a way to get the garbage and its pollution so hot, that the very molecules that make up the gasses just melt apart, becoming something else? I imagine we could achieve this by careening our crap into the sun.
@BlueFrenzy
@BlueFrenzy Жыл бұрын
Yes. Burying it under tons of rock so it becomes some kind of petroil in the future. Seriously, people is crazy when talking about decomposing pastics and other organic stuff (meaning you dump it into the atmosphere), while those big piles of garbage are actual carbon sinks.we should bury garbage in the same holes we extract petroil. We can capture CO2 and convert it to plastic, hence, by increasing plastic consumption and refilling old petroil deposits we should be able to return things back to normal.

A very fictional and naive idea of mine: but what about connecting these pipes to space or smth? So like when you burn something, the smoke and harmful chemicals go to space. Now material-wise I can see why it's not a thing. Not only do you need a massive pipe, but tons of fans to keep the smoke going up. But I think at least one of these space pipes could be quite the help, albeit looking hilarious in the distance
@BlueFrenzy
@BlueFrenzy Жыл бұрын
The reason why smoke rises is because the lower than air density. Even if you pipe it to the space it will end up falling back down to earth because space density is lower than of smoke. Even if you try to extend the pipes beyond geostationary orbit (something necessary to make the smoke go faster than orbital velocity so it doesn't fall back), you would still need fans with enough power to push the tons over tons over tons of smoke clogged into the pipes. If you could do that, you would need a fan powerful enough to blow several thousand fully fueled rockets piled one on top of each other into GEO. Not even talking about the technological problems of building a pipe like that AND supporting the immense pressure of 37.000 kilometers of high density gas trying to pull back to earth. At much much lower pressures you can convert that same CO2 and smoke into petroil over time.

Regarding trash for energy, it'd be useful to compare it to the pollutants from coal, maybe in some kind of X-energy-per-Z-tons-of-crud-released. I mean, at very least the process of *acquiring* it is going to be better -- you get to prevent a landfill AND prevent a coal mine.
@pedroff_1
@pedroff_1 Жыл бұрын
Also, for biodegradable materials, it'd be good to compare it to the emissions they'd have anyway through decomposition. You're even ensuring it becomes straight up CO2, skipping the nasty methane middle man

what we should be doing is setting up mass Plasma gasification facilities its a large plasma gasifier that burns over 2000 degrees Plasma gasification is a waste-to-energy system that converts trash into basic elements and synthesis gas (syngas) containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide. In plasma gasification, feedstock (trash) is introduced into a vessel of extremely high heat (~2,000 deg F) capable of breaking all organic chemical bond and reducing all trash including plastic, paper, glass, yard waste, food, filth, etc. to basic elements. The heat also melts metals, which are recovered. The technology is sometimes confused with incinerating or burning trash, but plasma gasification does not combust the waste as incinerators do. google not only that they use the excess gas a way to generate energy and it creates enough to power itself and a small town!! and they can separate the elements and reuse them and the best part is it doesn't emit anything into the atmosphere it burns really clean up tp 99 percent of the harmful gasses comapared to a high quality gasifier which can be anywhere between 72 to 92 percent clean and dubai is using the waste as a form of high quality sand to make their man made islands with
