Thus began the Middle Ages, more commonly known as the Dark Ages; beginning towards the end of the 5th century and lasting until the start of the Renaissance in the 14th century.

That's not a problem before. "What If" is just overemphasizing things on middle ages. People in the Europe before sleep at 6pm because the church rang the bell at exactly 6pm and everyone will go home and pray the Angelus. They'll eat dinner and after that, they'll going to sleep at around 7pm or 8pm. Furthermore, there's such thing as siesta. They would sleep at around 12-2pm to avoid intense heat at noon. I think it is now on their culture. Life was very simple back then. :-) Today's world is very complicated and sleep deprived. :'(

Africa and most of the Middle east to khalifats, being reduced more or less to Anatolia. The story is more or less the same though. Arabs conquered Middle east and N. Africa, up to France, N. Africa being the richest part of former Roman Empire. By taking those parts they contributed to so called dark ages because Europe lost it's "granary" and trading routs, and access to papyrus. But, spoils don't last forever so it was followed by decline. Than the Ottomans beat the Byzantium, and thr weakened khalifats, enjoyed prosperity and than by the 19th century became known as sick man from Bosphorus. It's the same fate that European colonialits shared - they didn't create their wealth, they stole it. Sooner or later, that hits back, and it hits back hard. Only what you create, you know how to keep. What is stolen, can't be kept.

Yes careful, a lot of things are wrong here. First, Middle Age didn't last until 14th century but until 15th century (except in Italy where Renaissance did start on the 14th century, it's called 'the trecento'), it's considered that Renaissance started when Christopher Columbus "discovered" America in 1492. (He didn't really discover it though, Vikings went there on the 9th century and Chinese sailors went there few years before him). Also, contrary to what a majority of people think, in Middle Age, people were not as dirty as we thought. They did wash themselves and took care of their teeth despite toothpast didn't exist yet, they just thought that water was carrying diseases.

That's also the time they used the ordeal of water that way. When it was used during the medieval age (very rarely and it was basically seen as a thing of the past during the high medieval age and associated with paganism) , it was used in the exact opposite way: you throw someone into water and if the person manages to escape the water that person is innocent and the accuser got executed.

NO! In fact it wasn't uncommon for people to live well past their 60s in weastern europe! Peasants were in great shape back then. People died from illness? Sure but people still do today. Sure medicine back then was primitive but they had something called and immune system that works great with a healthy balance diet. Why would they die of stress and exhaustion? They aren't slaves. Because they worked hard? To us maybe yes but to their standards it was routine! Also people bathed! Believe or not soap is a medieval invention! SO YES they did get through it!

Also the life of a knight wasn't much better than that of the serfs. This the life of the average knight was much more brief than that of the peasant, though neither lived exactly long lives in the first place.
