Excellent video Keith! You showed a prime example of what life in the job shop is all about. Everything from your quick thinking on how to get the job done, to running multiple machines at once, to pressing a cuttless bearing in and out. Your move to weld a plate on the bore to help press the sleeve out was great! Sometimes you need just enough help from some welded materials to help get a job done. Well executed my friend. Thanks for sharing this quick job with us. The guys who give the thumbs down just don't realize or respect the work involved and what we have to do day in and day out. Two thumbs up from me. Thank you for sharing, and I enjoyed watching this project. Adam

Experience and ingenuity work well together! Neat video, loved the way that plate just plopped in there while it was still hot off the table...got to be nice not having to hog out a shape by hand and then true it up on the lathe. Satisfying sounds from the press, too...like an old man trying to get up off the couch. haha! Thanks for taping this one!

Keith, Nice cure for a tough problem. I replaced more than a few hardened steel bucket loader bushings by welding inside the bore to shrink them and than freeze the new bushings in liquid nitrogen to shrink them enough to press in easily. Dan,

***** I would jack up my HP from 3 HP to 5 HP and if I was give a 6" diameter cylinder I would change those two items everything else would be the same. That would put me between 40 and 50 tons. I had 20 years of running other presses before building my own, I pretty much took the best from all the designs I favored. ;{)-----

A lot of the tugs and workboats I repair have bearings pressed into steel pipe stern tubes. Because the tubes are part of the hull, and can't be removed to remove and replace bearings, I split the bearing shell with a sawzall, to relieve it prior to removal.

Really nice job Keith, If I might make a suggestion, you might want to try using a bronze plug instead of steel, that way they both warm up at the same time and you have less of a chance of the weld failing because of dissimilar material temperatures. One other technique you may want to try is cutting the rubber out in 2 locations at 180 degs to each other and brazing a couple of studs to the shell and pulling it out instead of pushing. I work for a pump company and we do this all the time, and like you say any way of getting that sucker outta there rather than turning it out is a big bonus, like your style buddy.

dealing with this in a regular basis usualy i have a diffrent procdure. use a sawzall to split it on the inside in 2 or three spots usualy 6 -8 inches if you can then get a cold chisell and lift up a section of the berring so you can get a vice grip or drill a hole and you can slide hammer it out. if you need more cut on the berring it is easy to relive it more . usualy done on the boat without removing the berring holder. basic tools and about a hour you just need patince. on fiberglass boats the berring holder is built in and it is hard to chuck up the whole boat. =)

I just remembered that I have seen lens protectors for you hood and as each layer gets scratched tear it off and throw it away, they come in 10 sheet and 5 sheet stacks. They are the same as the ones for motorbike racing and most car racing. I just allows you to pull off a layer at a time, save on new shields. The price is good but didn't know your lense size to give you an exact price. They have them for welding helmets as well.

Yep problem solving at its best. Odd enought we went through this last week, except the customer sawzalled the bearing. Next the origional is Taiwan, next best the new one was like .055 over. So thats a few trips to the yard with my snaps and mics and mud on my pants. Turned it milled a flat for a set screw, turned a stub, and sent it home with a 3 pounder done......oh I flapped the threw hull with a battery drill. Shaws Boat Yard Dighton Mass......
