Congratulations on your 400th video, Keith! I just want to tell you that the amount of information you have given all of us over these few years is absolutely amazing. I have learned so much just from watching all of your projects. These videos truly are a fantastic education for those looking to learn about machining. I want to thank you personally for teaching me how to use a lathe and milling machine properly. I now have the confidence to use my own machines, and use them to their full potential. Thank you, Keith!

Hi Keith, Didn't seem to me like 400... That went fast, it was so interesting and you taught me so much. I'm 60 but that doesn't stop me from getting new stuff, your videos are some kind of treasure of knowledge... Simply thank you so much for your involvement, your caring and the unmeasurable time you spent teaching all of us. Just take good care of yourself. Truly yours, Pierre

400 videos - and not just "any" videos either! Your videos are so educational and detailed, yet funny, which makes this one of the best channels ever on youtube. You remind me of my old teacher who had a similar approach to tolerances and quality - even when not needed - and he taught me to bring the same philosophy to everything else I did in life. I stopped working with steel and instead decided to work with computers 25 years ago but your videos got me tinkering with fabrication and construction again and this I thank you for! I hope you will continue producing your videos since people learn more from your teachings than any school in the world - this I'm sure about :)

Wow, 400 videos! Congrats! I am glad they are still coming too! I haven't found my favorite CNMG4XX yet, but when I do I will be sure to send you a sample to try out. I don't do any marine shaft material but I do a bunch of tool steel A2, D2, S7, as well as 4140,4340 and 8620 and I am guessing some of that stuff cuts pretty similar. Looking forward to part 2. This should be a good test to see if there is any twist or wear in the bed of your lathe. :-)

bcbloc02 Cool thanks for the comment and there is a bit of wear in the old bed but still close enough to minimize hand work. I'm editing part two a little at a time and will be working on the What's in your box giveaway series, mixing the two up as the days roll. ;{)-----

I saw the same 4-jaw-turnaround method in the "Broken Beaver"-project, and I've been wondering one thing ever since I saw that... You could do this by turning between centers (with a drive dog) but you choose to use the 4-jaw and indicate it. I'm sure you have a reason... so why?

@RJSoftware2000

Same thing I was thinking. But from your answer I imagine this happens because the center hole gets worn/stretched and becomes slack. I could see how that could become a hassle. I imagine that one could make the hole and pin larger and deeper to compensate and keep tightening as progression needed. But that might be a continual problem. I wonder if there is a way around that to make turning by centers work for you. But I can see how one would just go for the simple of the 4 jaw. I work on watches so centering small parts is crucial. In the watchmaker world parts are so small we can use hot glue and as cooling/hardening find center. I don't think glue would work for you guys -lol.

I just noticed at 16:10, you didn't put the fancy grease from the toothpaste tube on the tip of the live center before putting it into the shaft, although you do it all the time now. Is this something you recently started doing?

Good video and glad to see you preserving your machine ways. Did you say no roll support available for your lathe? I usually cut a little longer blank, turn complete then saw off the remnant and back in lathe for second face. I like Mitsubishi Carbide MS 735 CNMG's in the tool room lathe. This is a stainless grade that works great on any alloys I have tried.

13:40 how do you get the difference between the radii? It seems you would need at least 50 percent of the surface turned, and then compare the diameter you measure in the video (turned + rough) against a perpendicular one (both sides turned).

Why not use a dead center in the spindle for the first cut? That would keep the bar running true to the center drills on the first cut. Also, is the reason you are not using coolant because of the mess? Inserts would last longer if cooled. Nice videos.

Heh. Parts for these attachments can be tricky, and the guy behind the lathe can make all the difference. We had a 220 series Komatsu with a custom thumb attachment, and after a long chase, we tracked down the guy who made the original design so he could make a new main pin. Much hassle and much money later, the new pin snapped in half in the first 10 minutes after install. After that, we just went with our local proven machine shop. Better parts, better service. More power to you, Keith.

Excavator that use demolition shears & crushing attachments like this actually eat up pins like these...new pins are costly to buy & the reasons are obvious. Sometimes a demolition company would be better off having a machine shop of their own, but the overhead might be a bit much... Cool Project...this is what I'll be doing, but on a smaller scale...backhoes & excavators up to the Cat 245...as well as pins for end dump trailers... Aloha, Chief
