It is about the difficulties that children face over judgements of circumstances beyond their control. This song is fire... They paint a powerful picture with surgical precise strokes. Note that they do not judge those that are ignorant, - they merely highlight the ignorance, and let the listener ponder.

This is a comment on the original video from Gress Fes This song tells the story of three children whose strange experiences seem normal to them. Each verse is centered around one of these children, each of whom was based on someone lead singer Brad Roberts knew, or on his own personal experience. Roberts, who wrote the song, broke it down in a Songfacts interview. We'll start with the first verse, about a kid whose hair turned white after getting in an accident. Said Roberts: "The child in the first verse, that story came from a combination of events. I was in a couple of bad car accidents when I was a little kid, so I was fascinated by them in kind of a distanced way by the time I wrote the song. But they made an impression on me. And I had heard a story about a guy who was also in an accident, only in this case, on a boat that was in Niagara Falls. The boat was going towards the Falls, so the people could see it as closely as they could, and then it turns away. Now, you have to turn away before you get carried off over the Falls! This guy made a miscalculation, and it looked like they were going to not make it back, and he realized, 'F--k... I'm going to die!' It turned out that the boat did not go over the edge, and he was able to get back. But his hair turned from black into bright white. His whole head. And since then - although this didn't inspire the song - I heard other cases of that happening, including my great uncle, who was dug in on an island near Japan during World War II and spent a night entrenched, listening to the Japanese crying out in their broken English what they would do to him when they caught him. And he was terrified. In his case, just a portion of his hair turned white. So anyway, that's where that came from, in the first verse. But the idea was this kid had something that made him stand out. And of course, when you're a little kid, if you're different, it's a problem. I don't know what it's like now, but when I was a little kid, anything that made you different made you a target: a target for abuse, a target for bullying, a target for humiliation. And that's the case with the kid whose hair turned bright white." The second verse is about a girl with "birthmarks all over her body." Said Roberts: "I actually have a birthmark at the base of my spine, which I was teased about a great deal when I was a little kid. It was a physical marking that made me different, and that made me the target of verbal abuse and teasing and bullying. So, that was really grown from an autobiographical part of my life." The third verse is about a boy who is not physically different, but goes through an unusual religious ritual. The real inspiration was a girl, but Brad Roberts made her a boy for the lyric. He explained: "This girl that I knew, her parents were Pentecostal Christians, and they used to take her to church every week and do what they call 'speaking in tongues.' When Pentecostal Christians get together every Sunday, some of them are moved to speak spontaneously. They claim that the spirit has entered their body and what they are saying is simply a transmission of that spirit. It's not themselves speaking anymore, it is the holy word of God speaking through them. And the language that comes out, sometimes it's an ordinary language, but quite often it sounds like gibberish. For my friend, as a little child going to school, she found this terrifying, needless to say, because her parents were the people that ran her life. Every kid has those parental figures, and they seemed to lose their minds. They seemed to just become different people, and it really terrified her. It made a big mark on her, emotionally. It was a scarring experience, I would say

There was a ritual for those who played in the band and hired guns (myself included) that you must see Brad's birthmark. Pulled down his draws. It was large, and apparently if it had been about a half inch over (towards the spine) he probably would have had spina bifida. Later on in the 1994 world tour, he got a bit bored with the verses and made up some different ones. The one I recall the most (maybe it was the only different one) was about a boy named Scott Bell and keeping his tonsils in a jar. Weird Al covered the song and called it Headline News, with verses about headlines at the time. He played with us twice, showing up on stage unannounced. We brought out kazoos to play the outro. He loved that, calling us good sports.

This song is different, because usually people are directly telling you what to think about something. He just lays it out, and you think about it for yourself. He does have a message, so it's not completely random. In negative space he talks about how kids want to fit in, but we all come from slightly different circumstances, so we're not the same.

The white hair thing is a real condition that happens sometimes with traumatic events. There was a family member of mine who went through a particularly traumatic "self-realization" (for lack of a better term) and when it was over, from that day forward, he always had bright white hair. Even though he was the youngest of the boys, when my mother cut his hair (she was a hairdresser) it would grow back white even though he used to have bright red hair.
@Ian-if2lf
@Ian-if2lf 2 жыл бұрын
going grey is normal, there is no condition (even shock) that can make dark hair.. grey , it was just his genetic time. even though he was youngest. I know a family of 4 brothers the 1st and 3dr have thick dark hair while the 2nd and 4th (being younger) are bald with more grey, its luck.

@@Ian-if2lf not gray, white. Canities subita also called Marie Antoinette Syndrome or Thomas More Syndrome is an alleged condition of hair turning white overnight due to stress or trauma. Although a number of cases of rapid hair greying have been documented the underlying patho-physiological changes have not been sufficiently studied. In short, we do not have enough information on it because not enough study has been done on it.

@@Ian-if2lf Also, we have been able to hypothesize an explanation in certain mice studies. One study on mice found that stress caused white hair even if the immune system was suppressed (ruling out auto-immune response) and if the glands producing cortisol were removed. The study concluded that over-activation of the sympathetic nervous system was causing stem cells to stop producing pigment cells in hair follicles. Again, we do not have enough information to explain it in humans.

The first kid who's hair turned white is a something he had read that when your in a traumatic event that your hair can instantly change color so he added it within the song. The second verse the singer has birth marks on his lower back so he used part of his experience but wrote it about a girl. The last verse about the church was about a friend of his that grew up in an extremely strict house and the parents would make him go to church when the singer and friends would be playing. Brad Robert's the singer came to the band with the song and no chorus. I belive he was just humming and the band said you don't need a chorus it's good like this so he continued to hum it.

"God Shuffled His Feet", "Afternoons and Coffeespoons", "In the Days of the Caveman", "Swimming In Your Ocean", "How Does a Duck Know?", "Two Knights and Maidens", etc. "Lurch" is to stagger around... jerky, uncontrolled movements. Basically, the kid went to one of the churches that practiced speaking in tongues and stuff, and they say that's worse than being in a car crash, etc.

This is a very conceptual and thought provoking album. Called God Shuffled his feet. Back in the day of pioneer home stereos with 15 in subs.. My very best friend Daniel before he died would have this cranking and thumping daily. The Bass track tone is clear and powerful. At first I was not a fan and was like WTF is this.. Now it's one of my favorite albums ever and is pure genius. The mixture of Brad's deep voice .. Though a little deeper than Vedders and Cash's your description made alot of sense .. His and the female voice is really perfect and mixed perfect on that album. His face was probably my face for the first many playing of the this album but I'm here to tell you . It's a masterpiece in many ways. Good for the soul and mind and really is timeless. It is very different but once it gets under your skin. Your glad it did. To this day its on any long road trip. I was a teenager when this came out and it was hit for many of us that didn't mold.....then it was the 90s and no one actually fitted ant mold. It took me years to realise that even the popular kids struggled at school. The lack of explanation is the point, we are all different and that's ok. There doesn't need to a reason.

Really deep song, a song about outsiders and the way they are judged by others for things out of their control. The chorus was only supposed to be temporary whilst they figured out proper lyrics but the band loved the “mmm mmm mmm mmm” and thought it fit the song perfectly because it didn’t overpower the stories in the verses. It wasn’t meant to sound judgemental…the exact opposite in fact.

Believe it or not, this band is actually very comedic and talented. They have a great sense of humor and are musically a breath of fresh air. I agree, this one always reminded me that as bad as my day could be, it could always be worse. And the crickets at the end lead into the next song on the album, which is about cavemen. That’s a fun song if you want to check it out! “In the Days of the Caveman”

To me, this song has always been about kids being called out for things that are beyond their control. The boy with the white hair, the girl with the birth marks, the boy with the whacko parents (lurch means to suddenly move in a direction, like a jerk). There are some people who belong to churches where they freak out and have spasms on the floor. I think this is what they were referring to, and again what his parents did was beyond the boys control. Brad Roberts has such an awesome voice. Check out The Superman Song. Another of their hits.

More Canadian Content -- yeay! "Superman Song" by the Crashies was their biggest, saddest song. It is beautiful. Lex, your description of the singer's voice made me laugh out loud. I once (in the early 90s) saw him on the street in Toronto, and I don't know how such a deeeep, solid voice comes out of a body so skinny. All the resonant cavities must be in his large head.

Brad seemed to working his way through the song, listening precisely to the lyrics and piecing them together -- with a little bit of faith that there's something there. I love this. The song is a jumping off point for consideration, as directed by the very pensive chorus -- rather than a dish served up whole and complete: we tend to consider our eccentricities to be more than that, but there's a way to see them differently, as something that connects us with others.

Got to see CTD about 20 years ago in Portland Maine with a meet and greet afterwards, really great show. Hard to believe that deep voice came out of the, how do I say it, not so big of a guy. But he was funny, sang beautifully, and was quite the pervert talking between songs which was very funny.

The hair turning white is usually what happens after a near death experience. Happened to my brother in law, when a motorcycle doing around 100 mph t-boned his car on a city street. They were both drunk, but since the motorcycle drove through the car and he and his girlfriend had to be rushed away, he didn't get tested. The biker died in the street.
