Intra workout drinks can be a bit confusing. You need to know what to take and when to take them. If you are just starting off in the gym you can get away with just H2O but for the more advanced lifter you need something stronger. Watch this video and see what i have to say about the subject. I use coconut water with maybe a pinch of sea salt. The sodium/potassium balance is important for good pumps and to moderate your heart rate.

Hey John keep these videos coming bro your advice is great and I trust your experience , I’ve recently switched from water to bcaas and now this last week I made the jump to 15g peptopro mixed with 15g cluster dextrin and 1g electrolytes and I am feeling great on it ,making some gainz and enjoying the workouts , respect bro

Best advice I've ever followed is Johns. Alongside training with the Onslaught program I decided to switch up from having post work out shakes to Hydro Casein and the Highly branched cyclic dextrin (intra), and I was really apprehensive of ditching the PWO shake.. but.. just do it. I've gotten stronger, bigger and I'm continuing to lose body fat.. I bow down to you John!

I take 100-200mg caffeine preworkout sometimes.Then dextrose & EAA intraworkout. Whey Isolate postworkout. Everything else is just solid meals every 2.5 hrs. Thank you for posting, Im absorbing info from your videos like a sponge, very beneficial and cost effective 😉

Ok, so I tried this without expecting much, because my nutrition was already pretty much on point. That being said - the results are amazing! Soreness after workouts is almost completely gone and I recover a lot more quickly. I guess you should never stop learning about nutrition. Thanks John!

Thank you for the solid advice. I watched this vid six weeks ago and since I train twice a day started on eaas and found much better recovery. Got some dextrin en route now to help with catabolism.

Update: been mxing eaas and dextrin, it allows more heavy training and recovery than eaas even. Great combo for heavy training.

I don't use anything when I'm training in the gym. I take bcaas before workout and whey protein with eaas after workout. Keep the videos coming. Have a good night John

Huge fan of Intra Workout drinks for improvements in recovery, etc. Been using these for years with clients as well with great success. Love throwing some Pepto pro into the mix :)

Hi John.. love all your videos and all of the great information you are providing to the lifting community. So you are a firm believer of the intra workout drink.. I am going to add this to my routine. Question about dextrose.. have you heard about consuming gummy bears. There is a brand of gummy bears out there and it contains dextrose in the ingredients.. would you say it is something that would be okay to consume in moderation in order to get the dextrose into your system? Keep up the great work and looking forward to watching more of your content on line.

I use 2 intra-workouts on the regular...1. Granite Supplement's Recovery Factor X with Karbolyn added in for extra carbs...2.TrueNutrition's Peri-MD. Both are great.

Any differences between taking cluster dextrin/EAAs intra-workout vs nothing intra-workout and just having let's say Whey Iso + high glycemic carbohydrates? Also, what are the benefits to combining EAAs and cluster dextrin intra?

Thanks Jon! I'm always thinking about this. Prefer Gatorade G2 to regular Gatorade because of the dextrose and have always used BCAAs, glutamine, and a little AAKG. How about post workout and R-ALA? I've seen both arguments, use it as you would insulin (pwo with carbs) but I have also seen the opposite argument against taking it pwo because you want a bit of insulin spike. Thoughts?

you can do the R-ALA pre too if using carbs during..very versatile ingredient! That is when I would do it personally.

For preworkout, Stim free preworkout with citrulline malate, agmatine sulphate and other stuff, combined with krealkalyn and cyclic dextrins, for intraworkout, bcaas and eaas, post workout whey and casein protein, glutamine, and some more krealkalyn

Vitargo + EAA + Electrolytes (mostly those 2 have them already) absolute difference in hydration and fatigue management in long workouts/games.

I drink a mix of Kaged Hydra-Charge electrolyte powder (both have the coconut water powder), Amino Synergy EAA's, Creatine Monohydrate (1/2 dose), glutamine, in 16-20 oz. of water with 1/25 cup of POM Pomegranate Juice.

Great info, John. I always thought some carbs prior to training gave me some energy, but this has actually helped with recovery a lot. Only question I have is whether or not I should continue to do the post workout at 65 g carbs and protein, or should I cut the carbs back because I'm taking in 30g during while training? Thanks!

Hey John- I'm a 27 y.o. Type 1 Diabetic who has become increasingly obsessed with bodybuilding. Gets a little tricky trying to relate the advantages of carb/glucose loading pre/intra workout with people who actually produce insulin. Any suggestions or pointers on optimizing pump/muscle growth for Diabetics? Awesome channel Thank YOU !

I am not a doctor so I am always careful. You have to use insulin though because your immune system is eating up your pancreatic beta cells. Type 2 diabetes is a completely different animal. Since you use insulin, you might want to research using it around training and showing in proper nutrients during that time.. :)

I've been on an insulin pump for 12+ years so I constantly have insulin pumping - it gets tricky around training and stressful times so yes, I am looking into proper sports-nutritionist consultation. Wasn't sure if you had trained or worked with any diabetics. Thank you !

I dont really worry about blunting GH response. It would be best to be fasted if that were the case, but we know that is not the fastest way to build muscle.

Nutrabio's Intra, which is basically EAAs and electrolytes. I dropped the HBCD because it was extra calories and as Dave Tate once said, you do more reps in one set than most people do in their entire workout haha

John, I have a quick question. about 12 years ago, I suffered a massive stroke and I am currently on Warfarin which is a blood thinner. Warfarin has many drug interactions that I have to be careful with. I am excited to try Recovery Factor, but I would like to know from you is it safe to take? Or if there is someone else that subscribes to you that could help me out with my question.

Hey John i was recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and got around ten workouts in my bag as a diabetic. I have been laying off all my supplements so far but can you tell me if EAAs have an effect on my glucose levels or any tips on using supplements as a diabetic in general?

I prefer shakes unless you take during training, and then I love EAAs, as they absorb right away, no digestion needed..

He is not shitting you about the cluster Dextrin. I've haven't tried his brand yet with the added pump agents etc,I use a pure cluster Dextrin and it makes a world of difference. I started doing high intensity lifting like you see in John's videos where I started really going for extra sets, partial reps after failure,10 second pause holds at the end of sets as well as drop sets to failure. I wasn't using any cluster Dextrin and for the first month I found myself very sore and taking longer than I had been previously to get back to any given body part, especially legs. I started cluster Dextrin drinking a steady amount with lots of water as I started my workouts,during, and a short time after and John is not kidding when he talks about how strange it is not to get sore, even after the most intense lifting sessions I felt somehow i wasn't lifting hard enough, even though I'm working out harder and with more intensity than I ever have (I'm mid 40s male who only started seriously lifting 2 years ago). If you are a casual lifter on a light schedule you don't need cluster Dextrin,but if you are attacking the weights with great intensity and drive, definitely give cluster Dextrin a try. I've made more gains since I started using alot of John's advice and training methods and have used his advice on proper form especially as it concerns older bodybuilders to take on weights that I couldn't lift in my 20s now in my 40s with ease and stay injury free. I can't recommend a better person to follow for the young as well as older lifter.

For my BB or when I go big volume training we do 15g hydro whey/peptopro. 20-40g HBCD. 5g Creapure Creatine. 2g acetyl l carnitine. 0,6-1g acetyl l tyrosine. 6g Citrulline malate. Electrolytes. Depending on the workout A-GPC as well.

For my super fast metabolism. My pre workout meal 2 hours before the gym is sweet potatoes 3 boiled eggs 30 min before gym banana with organic peanut butter and black coffee. Right before gym creatine, taurine, beta with Amino! Just my own secret recipe that works for me, that took me years to figure out!

I recently switched to adamantium aminos and a Gatorade during my workouts and It's been working great. I sometimes feel no soreness during my workout and after. Making me feel like I'm not doing enough even after a hard hour and a half session. Thank you

John are you saying maltodextrin does not have a positive effect in an intra drink with eaas? At first i have been using malt beer with eaas, then i tried cyclic dextrin and now i am using maltodextrin (just bought 5kg :P). To be honest, i cannot notice a difference in it's effect. Also maltodextin is not cheap, well compared to cyclic dextrin it is, but not so regular dextrose or other sugars.

Would you recommend this stuff for Powerlifters? Im currently being coached by Josh Bryant and it is brutal. I wouldn't consider myself and advanced lifter. I've been competing for 15yrs and totalled of 2000 raw, but I'm still learning new stuff all the time. Especially when it comes to nutrition! You come highly recommended by Garret Griffin (old training partner).

Mr. Meadows, first of all my condolences to you and your son about the huge disappointment that came about a week ago. Must be super dejecting for a great event to be canceled. Second, I was thinking about purchasing Micro-PA, Plazma and Mag-10 for a 6 week cycle. I have the money but I feel more to be an intermediate and not an advanced lifter. Do you believe I can make some gains with those supplements and following the directions in 6 weeks?

Well ya all your calories count but you can get a solid amount of carbs for like 100 calories. Some fruit juice or coconut water with some salt and eaa's.

I don't like drinking a ton of water intra so the hbcd is too "fast" for me. I have to use the bathroom every time. Eaas, glutamine, maltodextrin and Gatorade works best for me!

If I was buying bulk plain dextrose powder, what can I use for flavoring? Besides maybe diluted fruit juice? I’m guessing certain flavoring powders(tang, kool aid etc) may have too much sucrose to be viable?

I like drinking coffee pre and intra workout because I like coffee and there isn’t any meth in it. I put in 1/2 scoop MTS Epic Gains caramel macchiato for carbs and flavor, plus a 1/2 teaspoon Creatine mono. I’ve added a level tablespoon of unflavored BCAAs, but I’m not convinced they do anything.

I just ordered some bulk branched cyclic dextrin, BCAA, and citruline malate for intra-workout drinks which are new for me. Is it OK to have the coffee with the intra-drink, will the caffeine have any adverse affects? Thank you. I appreciate all the amazing content and information you put forth.

Hey John. How much Carbs you should put in your Intra Drink. I use Osmopure as my intra carbs. I’ve veen using 80grams on brutal leg/Back days and 60g in Rest of bodyparts. I feel that i goes trough nicely and i dont get any sick Stomach. 10Eaa and 2-3g salt and rest is carbs. Am i doing it too much or?

well the name of the game is recovery and women need it too! I wouldnt have them use the same volume as a man, because they need less calories(in most cases), but yea, it absolutely helps women too

I'm in the gym for over 2 hours because i do push pull splits i eat before the gym would i benefit from taking intra workout ? Also is it something you drink all at once or should you sip on it as you are working out? Thanks for any feedback

My only concern is insulin resistance. Is recovery factor for heavy days and keto recovery for days when you reducing your carb intake recommended ?

Great info but curious how you said Gatorade but held up a bottle of G2 which, I believe, is their lower sugar option. This needs clarification. The EAAs as opposed to BCAAs is a great point. Thanx John.

Hmmm. I know that you don’t need to feel sore to grow, but without feeling sore I don’t feel as if I’m growing. By growing I mean hypertrophy. Will cluster dextrin manage the insulin/cortisol interaction so well that there won’t be any muscle breakdown? I’m don’t understand that part.

it keeps the muscle protein breakdown much lower based on what I have seen with a marker called 3 methylhistidine.

I always get confused with classifying people as beginner, intermediate and advanced. What if you are someone with years of experience who has just gotten back in the gym after years of not lifting? That's where I am/was. Been back into the gym after a 7 year lay off. I was able to get the muscle memory for my lifts back within a few months and at about 6 months I was no longer feeling fatigue or gaining much strength from lower intensity. So I have been training higher intensity (albeit with longer rest periods) since, going to or close to failure on some sets, hitting everything x2 a week and lifting in the 70-90% range depending on the programming while testing my max lifts periodically. I have noticed significantly more progress in strength and muscle gain. So I am at the 1 year mark as of tomorrow. Am I a beginner, intermediate or advanced? Just curious about the philosophy here.

Ive been using a scoop of extend bcaa free by scivation mixed with l arginine 5g and beta alanine 1 scoop for intra I get good endurance and become vascular. Your thoughts?

I use anywhere from 25-50g of HBCD and 15g of EAA's I just buy these in bulk and make it myself. Tried things like Gatorade powder but it didn't sit well with my stomach

I would just eat a good meal since you are taking Plazma intra. Give my Recovery Factor a shot if you ever want to experiment with something else.

hey john do you use this while dieting? and whats your thoughts on dave palumbos style of keeping away from digestion during training as he said something along the lines of wanting blood to be pushed to muscle as priority ; digestion would hinder this

these nutrients do not require digestion process. They go right into blood basically. I am not advocating drink a whole food protein like a whey shake during. The harder you are dieting the more these matter also. Try this and you will see bloodflow to the muscle is not a problem!
