Thanks for clearing up the confusion I had between a cashier's check and a personal check because I was very confused! I see now that the cashier check is definitely more secure and guarantees that the money is available, accurate, and the check will not bounce as opposed to the uncertainty of a personal check where someone may write a check out for $200, but only has $10 in their account.

What if I happen to no longer want to use this check anymore and it's only written out to a certain person or certain business? Would the check just be voided and the money would be refunded back to my account. Not sure how checks work.

Certified checks are the ones where a fund is withdrawn from your account or you have to pay them the amount and they will segregate your funds and certify that you have the money. Cashier is completely on the bank's account. .... I wanna know what's teller's check. It seems it has a different meaning in Wikipedia

Hi Adam, i've discovered a misplaced and long-forgotten cashier's cheque made out to me, by HSBC Bank in the UK, for the equivalent of $1,891... a tidy sum! However it is well out of date having been written in, wait for this Adam, in 2009!!! What should I do with it to get the money, is payment to me still guaranteed, or, is it a lost cause?? Thanks.

If I was selling anything to a potential buyer I would never accept a cashiers check. They can still be forged too!! Also cashiers checks NEVER expire. The money is good forever. You don't have to use them until you decide to cash it in.

If a person with a cashier check happened to not use it after 90 days, the bank can rightfully claim it as "unclaimed property". Meaning that although cashiers checks dont expire, it is still property. Inside of property law, when unclaimed for a while, it can be then renowned or owned to a new owner. After 60-90-180 days, the issuing bank can return the check unpaid after this time. The person who bought the cashier's check could then get his cash back and get a new one or keep his cash with him, (if the bank agrees).

This is what I thought, I was sent a cashiers check by a buyer, went to my bank(Wellsfargo) deposited it, 24hrs later all the found was made available, started using the money…a week later my account was negative, called my bank , I was simply told that the check bounced…what else can I do… or I’m just fucked
