Just had my surgery to remove this two weeks ago, was born with it. I had it addressed 20 years later because the only symptom I had was mild hearing loss that only really had complications in my later teens. They had to perform a cranioctomy to preserve what was left undamaged in the middle ear. Unfortunately my balance canals and ossicles had to be removed as they were either destroyed or already heavily damaged. Fortunately the neuro team was able to persevere all the nerves in the area so implants are possible in the future to restore hearing and my opposite side balance canals will be able to compensate for the loss. Thank you modern medicine and health care professional for doing what they can.

hi! I have had it 4-5 times now and there is options for certain cases so for me, my 3 hearing bones were destroyed, and I had an implant from my eardrum to my cochlear, however its not got a very good success rate. so I now have less than 50% hearing in my left ear I believe. it was first found when I was 3-5 ive had the operation 2008, 2010?, 2012, 2016(or 18), and 2022 I was supposed to have it again this year but (hallelujah) it cleared itself up! make sure to have regular check ups with your surgeon to check for reoccurrence if you arent already at least each 2 years

I had six separate surgeries for this from 3 years old to 12-13. Really cool to look back at 22 and actually learn about it since I never cared to know much as a kid. I have pretty brutal hearing loss in my right ear from the surgeries and everything and of course with my luck my left ear also has lost hearing as I've gotten older. its a struggle to this day but I'm just thankful for the healthcare professionals that took care of me and prevented me from living with even worse hearing loss.

I had both ears with choles. Got surgery 2 years ago...permanent deaf on right and left side hears ok. Right side as u can see in the vid, all my bones, canals, drums, balance bones were removed since it wasnt treated when i was a kid. Can't play sports because of dizzyness when moving fast. Life's changed and sad but gotta keep living a normal life.

Thanks for the informative video! I did the surgery for this 15 years ago, and thought I was done with for good! However, Today, I was diagnosed with it, as well as hearing loss, and it’s been very emotional roller coaster for me especially this happened in not very good time! This video helped to ease my pain! Edit: I got scheduled for the surgery for October 2021! (Pray for me please) I was also told, I might need another surgery for the hearing loss restoration after the first surgery!! Will keep editing this comment as I go through the process! Another Edit: Had my surgery done this past Monday, it took 6 hours in the operating room, more than expected! It went well, but I am still under the side effects! Now I have temporarily hearing loss which should come back to normal gradually based on my doctor explanation! @@mcclung_blab4128 I hope your surgery goes well and wishing you a speedy recovery soon! I am doing better but I got frequent wringing in my left ear (the one I had the surgery on). It should be temporary until 6 months to one year after the surgery based on my doctor! My doctor said we need to monitor it therefore he’s been requiring monthly visits until we mark one year! Also, keep in mind this might come or grow back if there’s anything leftover inside it!! Also, just for your information, if you plan to travel anytime after the surgery, make sure you let your doctor know! Since we are in a holiday season, my doctor stressed enough to see him before boarding any airplane or even a recreational rides like Roller Coasters, etc!! His main concern was not to cause any pressure on the eardrum or the middle ear!! So make sure you notify your doctor until you mark one year!

I have had this treatment 6 days ago {May 17th 2018) by the NHS in England. I was a day patient and the packing and covering bandage came off the first night i was home, since then i have had a discharge from my ear constantly that smells of TCP. I have had no pain just slight dizziness since the op. Keep on taking paracetamol and Ibubrofen every 4 hours helps. i am very deaf in my right ear at the moment but hopefully it will correct itself. good luck

I had this surgery back in March 2020 (By the NHS) I had to have 2 of my hearing bones removed as they were fully infected and couldn't be saved.. it wasn't as painful as I was expecting and I recovered. Unfortunately I have got to have this operation again on the 28th March 2022 but this time its a worse operation! Who knows why? Anyways this video was really informative!

Not to rain on anyone's parade but I noticed no professionals are answering any of these questions. From experience I can accurately state, it is a diseases not to be ignored. If you're ear hurts or it's draining, YOU need to make an appointment with an ear, nose and throat (E.N.T.) doctor. You can ask others here how their procedures went for them or what signs and symptoms THEY experienced but it will not benifit YOU! Each case is different. I had cholesteatoma removed 1989 & again in 1991 after several bouts of ear infections over a year.& age 16. I didn't get to go home same day.... I went into respiratory arrest and the surgery had to be stopped 3x for 15 min each time due to difficult intubation! My dr. could not stop the surgery since he said I had too much puss to drain out or it would nxt go to my brain. I had to stay 4 days with aminophyline drip, respiratory tmts. O2, etc. (I have no hx of lung disease) I guess too much anesthesia to keep me asleep during this difficult surgery. Thank God I have excellent ear surgeon who specializes in neuro-otolaryngology too. Dennis Bojrab MD. It's now 2024 and I've no major problems since that initial 1989 surgery.. I only lost some hearing. Prior to the surgery I also had nystagmus. **I was a 2 # preemie at birth in 1947; I wonder was this a reason I've had ear infections going back to age 16 when I was hospitalized for mastoiditis? ..and suffered multi ear infections for life UNTIL this procedure was done in 1989 and I no longer having these infections??

Hello! 9 months ago. I went to have my ears looked at. As I felt there was such a suble difference in my hearing of my right ear. Only noticed it at night. The difference is something most people I feel would not even notice. The difference was the sharpness of higher frequency sounds I feel. But I would say just clarity and sharpness. Like you guess need to turn a knob on a sound system less than a mm to improve the integrity of sound. So I had my ear irrigated. Olive oil in the ear before. Then I noticed my ear have problems Id never experienced before. As if it was sticking and un sitcking in side. I would tilt my head to the side and hearing would improve etc I then had it looked at by Gp and told water behind the ear drum and the nurse couldnt see my ear drum as there is some skin there. SO did this cause my cyst that is deep inside my ear canal that will need surgery?? or was there a prob and the irrigation has exacerbated it? or coinsidental?? Doctors did consider grommets when I was a child due to me having so many colds and I had swimmers ear when I was 15. I am now 40. SO the big question is, is the cyst a Cholesteatoma??????? or can it be another type of cyst as i think at my ENT app he said he tried to remove it but to deep.... and I do have a prob with my estuation tube. Oh and the Gp 9 months ago said my ear drum looked a little stretched, possibly due to an ear infection in the past.

Based on my personal experience, it’s very diligent surgery, it needs to be removed all carefully! If there is tiny bit left out between the vessels the chances for it will grow again and come back is very high! It needs to be monitored every year after the surgery!

Cholesteatoma is no joke. Initially I let my hearing issue go on way way too long before I saw a doctor. Years. I'm now about to have my third surgery in 5 years. It was so bad in my left ear initially that they had to rebuild my ear drum and ear canal. Second surgery was placing a prosthetic hearing bone, clean more Cholesteatoma, and further rebuild the canal. I am hoping the third surgery will be the last. Clearing out another bit of cholesteatoma growth. Hopefully done from the outside. The first 2 they had to cut around my ear and fold it over to get in deep. Not fun.

@@user-unknown__149 3rd surgery turned out a little more involved than I had hoped. They ended up having to "take down the canal wall" as the doc put it. My hearing for the most part didn't change(still around 85% good even though the doc has always been surprised by that. Said it should be way lower). some sounds come through a little different and louder than others, but for the most part the same. Doc says doing that should stop further growth, but I will have to go in twice a year to clean it a little as removing the canal wall doesn't let things like ear wax and other debris empty out as well. Surgery was July 13th of last year. So far so good. Doc likes bringing in students to show them and teach them when I come in for visits lol. Even have a little pig skin as a patch in there rofl.

Hi I have this problem I had a cholesteatoma 20 years ago when I was young and had a couple of bones removed but still have around 50% hearing in the ear " Other ear is great better than most peoples so hearing isnt a problem" and now it's returned again and worst than before with discharge and the smell. I recently had to quit my job but trying to say to people that I can't work atm is nearly impossible no one knows how bad it is. I tilt my head and discharge comes out, have headaches etc. Its an awful thing to have.

Forgot to say, when I had the operation 20 years ago at age 12 it was supposed to be a 2 or 3hr operation but ended up taking 5 or 6hrs. But I cant even remember having much discharge or smell, that's why I'm sorta worried now like this thing might have been building up for 20 years, the discharge is multiple times a day and the smell is like death. The only good thing is I don't have dizziness, pain or ringing in my ears etc. I had a mri scan about 6mths ago just to see how much damage was done, but haven't heard anything back yet. So either it's not as bad as I think or its took over my skull and nothing can be done.

Every since I was 16-17 I struggled with a constant ear infection on my right ear, normal symptoms, a lack of hearing, the sensation of discharge, yellowish wax. Recently it has returned but it has become more different, same symptoms, earring loss, sensation of discharge, very yellow ear wax except, this time when I would use a cotton swap to clean my ear, a white sticky substance would come out. John Bryan Cabello facial paralysis is rare. Was your 1st surgeon experienced one? Go for revision only if it is extremely needed . Consult an expert surgeon who has 30 40 years experience. Unfortunately many docs suggest operation when situation can be perfectly monitored indefinitely

John Bryan Cabello surgery should always be avoided if it can be. Cant really comment on your case since i am no expert. I can only advise you to consult a ENT who has vast experience especially in middle ear surgeries. I consult Dr ashutosh pusalkar. He is too expert and one of few honorary surgens of german ent society. He is located in mumbai india. You can try to contact him via email or telephone. I would always consider his advise as final.
