We get asked quite often about being fit for a driver. How much can it help a golfer? Are gains real? We decided to go to one of the largest premium fitters, Club Champion and instead of having them explain what a fitting could do, we had them perform one.
Adam Fonseca, host of the popular podcast Golf Unfiltered, was our test subject and he went through the full fitting at the Club Champion HQ location in Willowbrook, IL. While we sped up the video to keep you from having to sit through all of his swings, this is a Club Champion fitting in full. Nick Sherburne, founder of Club Champion and Dean of CCU, walks through every aspect of both fitting and distance to make it easy to understand.

When I did my fitting, it was almost like a lesson just learning what each number meant and what I was doing to make them happen. Not only did the driver I get help me with consistency and distance, but knowing what my path was changed ever other aspect of my game. Was a 7 handicap and now a 2 Handicap

This is a trip ! I got fit , was my TM M5 . Put in several shafts , showed me the # . The Fuji Ventura S Black gave me fastest ball speed by about 3-4%. They opened the face about a degree. $350 shaft , spun it , add tip , fit fee tax , shipping -.$600. Why Black ( lowest flight ) I hit driver low ? Total distance I guess . Most consistent and longest . Worth it ? Yeah . So now, went after my TM M6 3 Wood - local club man put a $200 Fuji , step lower than Ventura , but most consistent ever .

100%, but there’s no need to buy from Club Champion. Pay for the fitting, get your build sheet and order it from the OEM. It’s much cheaper

Great informations and insight. Issue for me this whole process cost aroubd $2500 probably which most dont have. That is interesting as we spend hours practcing and playing with equipment that doesnt fit. So in reality when u step back, u need to find the money.

That's a $500 shaft. $500 for the Taylormade head. $150 for the fitting session, plus shaft puring and other customization. So, ~$1,200 driver. I wonder if there's any chance they offer up a reasonably priced, but somewhat comparable shaft option?

I doubt it...I have a buddy who just went and got a full bag setting and had brand new forged irons (forget brand) he's an 18 handicap and they didn't change anything except shafts....he walked out with a $4300 bill for the full bag fitting $350 then new shafts on his irons and driver. For that type of money by end of year he should be a 13 at worst 10 at best and can almost guarantee you he'll still be an 18 for only the sheer fact that equipment is great, but your swing and practice can fix way more than a shaft ever will.

@@TheBlackcloud2012 This is exactly what my fitting was like. My wife bought me a fitting and I decided on wedge. They sold me an unusual head and shaft for twice the retail rate plus extras (like puring) plus the fitting charge. Trouble is, the average person doesn't know enough to be able to question what they say. I asked about having a set of Apex irons built (believe 6 thru AW) and they quoted me $2500+. I had my local golf store build them for around $1200 including upgraded shafts. I recommend watching TXG videos to learn more about club fitting before going in for a fitting.

I was fitted w Ventus S-6 , hand made Velo Core ( not the Stock TM version ) My TM M5 head , they opened face a degree. With tip , spun, $600 delivered. It’s a killer ..... but put the Fujikura Pro 2.0 S6 in TM 3 wood . I had dude hit at range has the Ventus , he liked it . I hit some and big improvement from stock shaft . $200

Phil R yeah they 300% mark up . Best is pay for fit and then buy your self . It’s not a total sucker deal , but not doing to save money . Stock shafts are the lowest grade . I put some KBS steel shafts ( on line company fit app ) Best ever , still $350 and $200 install . Want price ? Know what best , but used and tweak ( lie and grip for swing weight ) one swing weight is what a dollar bill weighs ......so . My driver was fit at D6 ! ( they told me ) feels the same

Why click down and draw when that obviously resulted in the lowest launch... I wonder what would have been the result as standard and neutral... was it too high? If the intent of the draw was to counter the open face from delofting, neutral with a 12-13* launch seems money... 🤷🏻‍♂️ idk

Thorough fitting, just a bit too salesy and high strung for me. Also, was there any feedback from Adam about the feel, acoustics, visual appeal? Personally, I would sacrifice some distance for a club that looks good at address, and sounds and feels best. Did he discuss budget prior to the fitting?

Depends on the driver head. Some can be adjusted without moving like Callaway's dual cog.

Correct, the shaft is set to that "Pure" line, aligned when face is square at address. Moving the shaft moves that "pure" point, and the callaway adapter is a great fix to this issue, if you want to adjust a driver you just spent almost 2 hours fitting to.....

Too much talking, too fast, makes it feel like a car salesman hustling a buyer. Always upselling to a high priced shaft head combo. Not to teach you, but to sell you the high-end product. Bet they never try a Grafalloy Prolaunch Red - $50 shaft, 3.0 torque, tip stiff.

He added weight to the new head to narrow the dispersion , the Srixon driver head has weights you can change for that reason. I would have said that the new shaft and head weight change should have been required and saved a lot of expense.

It’s crazy to me that the frickin’ owner of Club Champion is doing a club fitting with lots of estimated spin numbers.
@brendanhobbart
@brendanhobbart 4 жыл бұрын
Seems like everywhere I go, Trackman owners believe the estimated spin numbers are accurate, or at least close enough to not make it worth dotting the ball. I have had two CC driver fittings now and got great results. However, on both occasions I had to insist on culling the estimated spin shots. The results would have been very different otherwise. I recently had a Titleist fitting with Trackman and GCQuad simultaneously. The ball was not dotted to begin with and I was getting unusually high spin numbers from my hybrids on Trackman. The fitter insisted the lower spin numbers being shown on the store's GCQuad were incorrect. I went out to my car and got a sheet of dots I use for my own practice (also on Trackman) and hey presto - all the now-measured Trackman spin numbers started to line up with GCQuad, lol. Egg on face for that fitter (who had NEVER seen anything like that in his many years of fittings). Dear God... Estimated spin numbers are entirely useless in an indoor environment. If Trackman can follow the entire ball flight then it's got a much better shot at calculating a close-enough estimate. Even then, it is still an estimate and not a measurement.
@danbennett5157
@danbennett5157 4 жыл бұрын
I don't expect a layman to spot that the spin rate is in italics, but a fitter has no excuse. And this video is just bananas to me - the player's sole launch condition issue was a high spin rate. They put him into a particular shaft based on estimated spin numbers (starting at 11:06), and then the balls he hit with the M5 (the head ultimately picked) was again displaying estimated spin numbers. So we really don't know for sure if the fitter fixed the only problem the player came in with. CC has a fantastic rep (although I've never used them), but it's just a horrible marketing piece for the founder to do a video showing a fitting with such a glaring process problem.
@PapiGearHead
@PapiGearHead 4 жыл бұрын
@@danbennett5157 We can agree that regardless of perceived inconsistency with spin rate calculations the start and end driver configurations are the only factors that has changed. If start spin value was x and end spin value is Y then X-Y = reduced spin rate with all other test condition being equal.
@alistairs8495
@alistairs8495 3 жыл бұрын
@@danbennett5157 That's good info, I didn't know that the machine doesn't actually read spin rate. At 8:12 he gives good advice for using all the data in context, not just spin numbers. He goes so far as to say you can have success with monitors that might be out of calibration. In the end, it was the improvement of the grouping, not spin rate and carry, that he used to make a final decision.

@@THPGOLF It makes zero difference to most weekend golfers if it is a 7 iron or 8 iron into the green. Most will miss the green, duff a chip, then 3 putt anyway. They could likely score just as well if they would hit an iron off the tee and layup on most par 4s. Of course, the people selling clubs and fittings don't want you to know that.

Not horrible, but not ideal either. Too much focus on shaft which is a big misconception, no focus on club data which is so important (launch angle, dynamic loft, etc), too much focus on total distance instead of carry distance - he did NOT get 20 extra yards by any means (he hit 240s with his original driver, but sometimes hit some bad ones at 220). Total distance on these monitors is a shot in the dark - the variables in roll out are plentiful. Not sure if there is dishonesty going on here to make a sale (I kinda feel there is) or ignorance. Either way, not great.
