I like the calm way you explain stuff. You don’t sound like an infomercial all hype up 👍

That 155M Beachmaster actually is a great casting reel, similar to the 200 Surfmaster and the famous Squidder 140. That reel probably is from the 60-70s based on the colored bakelite handle and chrome on bronze spool. For a comparison, here in Hawaii we cast reels up to the 6/0 Senator with 80lb mainline and 10-12 oz leads on 13-14ft specialized rods meant for Ulua ("Hilo guides" and stainless steel butt caps). Properly service it up, get a Tiburon frame for it (these are notorious for frame twist), new HT-100 drags, and maybe a larger 24-66 handle, and also a 200 Surfmaster aluminum spool (lighter weight than the chrome on bronze). The Jigmaster and Senators are better for offshore, but we also use them for casting. We normally use Jigmasters as a minimum, for Oio and Papio. The 4/0 Senator and the Newell 454, 546, 550, etc we use for bait casting as well as slide baiting for the Ulua.

I had a reel like that before i went into fly fishing and believe it or not i would rather fish with one of those reels than with a spinning reel. Spinning reels are too troublesome with line twists, tangles, and wind knots. The absolute best way to fish saltwater is free lining. The best reel for free lining is the one featured in this video clip. No need for casting. Just let the line dangle like in fly fishing and flick the bait out there and youre set to go
