What is a dramaturg?

I have been scrolling through videos and websites for 3 hours trying to find the definition of a dramaturg to help me with documentary work fro school. Got curious after seeing a credit for Dramaturg in the program for a wonderful performance by New Zealand's India Ink Theatre Company, here in the US. Still don't understand it, I'm afraid. From the description here and elsewhere, it seems like something a director would hate, a third wheel looking over their shoulder, interjecting ideas they don't need. Too many chefs. But apparently, that's not the case. I suppose it makes sense in practice, and maybe it's not something a non-participant can understand.

I don't currently work in a theatre. There isn't really employment in the theatre where I live, but I do hope to get a teaching job and teach different aspects of theatre that are not taught where I live because there is a very large theatre community - it is just that it is almost all community/volunteer and the ones that do pay are just very little payment for some time . . . nothing that could be a job.

I wonder if this title still counts even if the main discipline isn't theatre but in Multidisciplinary exhibition curation that includes theatre or dramatic pieces, or if this is a strictly Theatrical term?
