What is a Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT)?

Thank you for mentioning you shouldn't "creep", you really need to get off the brake and onto the gas so the computer knows you want to move and lets the clutch out for you. The biggest cons (I've heard) about the DCT is a touch of roll back. So like a true manual there is a small period of time when the vehicle isn't fully in gear (as the clutch slowly engages) thus it rolls slightly if your on a hill. Some models have an autohold feature to help with this but you need to push a button to activate it. Also first gear may not be as smooth as an automatic w/a torque converter since the DCT is technically slipping a clutch for you... once again just like a manual transmission. Its too bad H/K made the upshift /downshift backwards. Pressing forward should shift down and pulling back should be the upshift. However pretty much every OEM messes this up expect Porsche.

Yes, my Tucson has DCT and yes there is a roll back period but the biggest adjustment in the DCT is the "jerking" motion sometimes when coasting

Very well explained. Thank you. Dual clutch makes sense for a Kia but other vehicles that are used for off roading ( example: some Jeep models) experience problems with the clutches overheating while trying to search for the correct gear. 🙁. You mentioned wet clutch with DCT. Please explain. DCT is best thought of as an automated manual gearbox. Volvo Trucks I-Shift have perfected it, and give a choice of single clutch or dual clutch automated manual. You are spot on about stop start traffic: either give it power or hold the brake pedal down. Do not hang around stopped and no pedal pressed.

Had two Kia Rio automatics over the last few years. The earlier model came with the torque converter and the newer 2019 model I have now has DCT. I noticed straight away the difference when I changed cars. The tc model was a lot smoother changing up and down through the gears like a proper auto whereas the DCT car , while not as smooth, definitely feels sportier and the engine note sounds more like a manual as it changes gears. I actually prefer the older 2015 auto box but I got a good deal on the newer one so I went for it anyway. After 3 months owning it I don`t think about the difference any more and get on fine with DCT.

You can keep your DCT in manual mode when you're creeping and it should reduce wear.

I was reading some articles about the Kia K5 GT having problems with DCT’s. Is this still happening with the newer models?

Truthfully, we haven’t seen anything at our dealership. Charlotte’s background is primarily in the service department and we haven’t had an concerns with the DCT malfunctioning/failing. I’ve only come across 1 or 2 threads that mention it in the US, but have yet to find anything in Canada.

My wife leased a 17 Niro in May of 17. I bought a 18 Niro in August of 2018. Neither time very we told about the service required for the clutch fluid. When I found about the needed service at 22K I took mine in and the service dept. had not heard of the required service. They did not know what needed to be done, who could do it or how much to charge. I have always wondered about the others with this who have not found out about the required service and it not getting done. My Niro's are not an automatic transmission. They are a manual transmission controlled by the computer.

My Ford Focus had a DCT. It was a nightmare because in the 66 thousand miles I drove it the clutches had to be replaced 3 times. Hopefully The ones on Hyundai / kia are better than the ones in fords.

Ford had some major issues with their DCT on Focus and Fusion model. From between 2011-2016 in 2020 they settled a $30,000,000 lawsuit over this concern.

@@BrantfordKia The first two were covered by warranty but the third I had to pay $2300. Luckily because of the lawsuit I got my money back and then some. Got rid of the Focus and bought a Kia Soul +. 116k miles and not a single issue.

How do I know if my Sonata 2015 2.4cc has DCT installed? My shift locks just like the one you are showing on this car I'm asking because I want to know which ATF should I use when replacing it On the user's manual it shows all different options for all Sonatas from that year using engine 1.6, 2.0, 2.4 and this applies if installed it says Mine does not have shift control on the steering wheel. I just bought an N-Line Kona. I like the car, but noticed shuddering in bumper to bumper traffic or stop signs. I was unfamiliar with DCT technology. Do I have to put my foot on the gas every time to stop that shudder?

Drive it like how you would drive a manual, give it gas to prevent it from shuddering (feeling like stalling) smooth it out

Honda doul clutch is failing a lot. Honda DCT cars between 2012-2014, DCT failed almost all. I hope they fixed it in latest models, But DCT is not good for heavy traffic. still I prefer CVT even though driving pleasure is not that great. Is there a solution for heavy traffic driving for dct?

Dont ride your brakes, give yourself and the car in front of you some distance before accelerating, that way you dont wear out the clutch, (just like in a manual transmission) dont creep in traffic.

A Dual Clutch Transmission is something that you will never be able to completely understand unless you have driven and mastered a classic manual transmission. Unless you have a full understanding of a conventional manual transmission do not buy a car that has a Dual Cutch Transmission. Thats it in a nutshell.

You are correct my friend in the understanding portion but I feel like the girls did a pretty good job explaining the idea of what’s important to keep in mind to get the average person down the road without hurting the car. I believe if ALL sales staff did a quick demo of what not to do and why not to do it the average auto buyer would shake their head and demand a proper automatic. Truth be told I’ve never driven a Kia with one but I have driven another brand and for me it was like having a friend who is really good at standard doing my job for me.

I don't think You have ever driven a car with DCT :D how much you think you need to know to drive it? it does the shifting for you. no real difference from regular A/T from the user standpoint. if you want you can upshift and downshift - in 99% of the regular driving its unnecessary. after driving it for 3 years I see two cons: 1. sometimes it misses at predicting next gear and you have to wait a bit more for it to engage the right gear - like when you suddenly hit the breaks hard when going 70 and then want to immediately accelerate from 20. it might do a few downshifts quickly, and it will expect next gear change to be down, but you want to accelerate so it has to prepare for upshift instead of downshift 2. if the transmission oil is not heated up the first few minutes of driving in the winter might be a bit jerky. i tend to wait for 30-60s after starting the car when the temp outside is around 0^C other than that the shifting usually its super smooth and unnoticeable

Manual transmissions are not too difficult to learn to replace, and you don't need to replace or reprogram the car's computer or buy an expensive diagnostic tool to diagnose what's wrong with it. Just learn to drive one and one day you'll be glad you did.
