Introducing the beautiful Fully Hollowed Out Guzheng (整挖筝 in Mandarin) by Mujiuchen. In this video, you will find out what makes the Fully Hollowed Out Guzheng such a distinct Guzheng. In comparison to the regular Zhemian Guzheng (折面筝 in Mandarin), the Fully Hollowed Out Guzheng is an older and more traditional Chinese way of making a Guzheng. The Mujiuchen is really hard to control the strings and the “noises” because it echoes very brightly. But I believe for players who want to work on getting rid of noises, this is also a must have guzheng. It is perfect to use to work on finger strength. Each pluck should avoid string-nail contact noises as much as possible. Thanks for the educational video, I’m waiting for my Mujiuchen’s Mujiuchen to come!

I love the craftsmanship of the Mujiuchen guzhengs, especially the one with the step-style strings instead of the usual S-shape . How is the soundboard dried? Is it also air-dried like the Zhuque?

Can you do a video explaining the different types of guzheng? I get what's the difference between a normal Zhemian Guzheng and a Zheng Wa Zheng but I'm really confused as to why some zhengs have red strings and some have green strings. Like, how many types of guzheng are out there? What makes them different from another? What's best for beginners and intermediate players?

It depends on the methods used by the factories. We are not very sure as these are guarded secrets, they only let us see a few minutes of each process.

But is the bottom board also from the same block of wood? It's not like the high end Kotos. These instruments are way way way too expensive. Too unattainable.

Guzhengs are very hard to make, and every facet of the instrument is part of the experience. They stimulate just about every main sense. Sight, touch, sound, and smell- not tasting, though. So the woods themselves are often very high quality and expensive, and the craftsmanship that goes into it can be immense. I have a very cheap guzheng, and even it is made with pleasant smelling sandalwood and beautiful decorative carvings. They just never truly come cheap. All you can do is get the most affordable possible, or save up a lot.

The bottom board isn't. I understand that the price is on the high side, that is because it requires a lot of skilled workmanship and material just to make one of these Guzheng. However, it is absolutely worth it as one of these lasts a lifetime or more, the sound is also fantastic. On the side note, you could also purchase a more budget friendly zhemian guzheng if you're a beginner with your first Guzheng. This is more catered to professionals and people who wants a good sound for the long term.
