The golpe is one of those quintessentially flamenco techniques - we hit the guitar with our nail or finger for a satisfying percussive thwack! In this video we take a quick look at the different kinds of golpes - when to use which and how they work.

Thaks. In case any viewers only have a steel dtring acoustic but want to give Spanish guitar a whirl , look for ball end nylon strings and save shredding your fingernails no matter ehat length they are. Im using Earnie Ball, nylon ball end strings and you can find a video on installing them. A steel string acoustic usually has a thicker top so your less likely to cause damage but if you have a pick guard leave it in place. Yhe sound wont be as good as a flamenco guitar but its a cheap way to practice and you may need to lower the string action in most cases.

Thanks ofr this video! I was trying to find videos on the golpe technique since I thought it would be an injustic to learn the other techniques like Rasgueado without learning golpe. This video has been very helpful!

I use another one similar to the last that you showed. A strong Rasgueado mainly on the treble strings that dosn't end with the fingers in the air but hitting the top of the guitar. And yes, this one might hurt too 😁........

Kai! Thank you for your videos. Do you have any tips on cutting/shaping fingernails?
@FlamencoExplained
@FlamencoExplained 3 жыл бұрын
Short answer: not really. Longer answer: I've seen so many amazing players with so many different nail shapes that I can't really believe that there's one 'right' shape that works for everyone. What's important is to get the right amount of resistance at the nail without getting caught or hung up, plus of course it needs to sound good. I guess I'd say start with basically mimicking the contour of your finger itself and see if that works for you. If not, you start experimenting, trying different stuff you read about (the ONLY nail shape to play faster!!, as many will tell you) and see what does it. Sorry I don't have anything more definitive...

Kai, isn't there some kind of golpe some people do with the thumb on top of the strings?
@FlamencoExplained

jgrossma There may well be one like that but I’m not familiar with it. I teach what I know, but that’s not to say there aren’t other ways out there!

I'm a big believer in the bent thumb for rasgueados, but that doesn't mean you absolutely have to do it to play well. I just find that even though it can be a pain to learn, it solves a lot of problems for anyone having trouble with their rasgueados. Cheers, Kai

Shouldn't a golpe be without hitting the guitar with the fingernail? So only with the finger, which makes a more bassy sound?

Hi - for most players the default is with the nail (which is why we all have tap plates). A lot of people use the all-flesh version too, sometimes, but it’s generally not the main golpe we use.

Yes, I prefer to use the flesh. Has much more depth to it than using just the nail on its own, which is a bit thin sounding.

I cover almost everything in other videos, and wanted to really focus on the golpes in this video, so it didn't feel right to get into all of it out of context (also the video would have been hours long!). Cheers, Kai
