I think it depends on the context in which that statement is applied. If you're talking about some edgy teenage nihilist throwing that around casually like a thoughtless cliche, then you're definitely right - the "it's all just different tribes duking it out, so who really cares, maaaaan," sense. However, I do think there is some truth to it in a fundamental, materialistic sort of way. Humans are hierarchical. and will divide themselves into and against other hierarchies, be they religious, cultural, ideological or what have you. So when people express ideas, they're automatically pitting themselves against other ideas that contradict what they feel should be right. It gives rise to conflict, and conflict is what happens when two or more parties try to exert power over the other(s).

This term, like so many others, is thrown around so loosely that it hardly has any meaning anymore. You'll notice no one ever labels someone a grifter if they agree with the ideas of the supposed grifter. This doesn't really make much sense because whether or not the person in question is a grifter doesn't depend on your agreeing with them. So it's really just a way -- one of many now -- of broadcasting your disagreement with someone while simultaneously calling into question their moral authority. It also seems to function as a tacit acknowledgement by the person making the accusation that the target of the label is more successful than they are.

I think the solution to our current predicament is for the sane members of the populist left and right to set aside our differences for now, and work together. Aleister Crowley, known as the wickedest man alive and The Great Beast 666, had far more principled moral convictions than Vaush. Totally unfair to compare The Great Beast 666 to Vaush. Crowley clearly expanded on the philosophy of "do what thou wilt" with the foundational principles of Thelema: "'Do what thou wilt' shall be the whole of the law. Love is the law, love under will." Which is a convenient way to say "do whatever you want, but if you want to do something bad then that wasn't your true will." At the very least it does delineate between good and bad actions by claiming that will is love, so to do what thou wilt is to do good, any will to do bad is not true will. Vaush is far more cynical and morally dubious than the most notorious hedonistic drug fiend in modern history.

The aesthetics of his drums and stage backgrounds often feature geometrical designs that are part of the sacred geometry of Thelema such as the unicursal hexagram. I mainly thought it was funny to compare Vaush unfavorably to a man known as the wickedest man in the world. It's hilarious but also fair. Vaush is far less principled and moral than Crowley.

I used to be an avid fan of the Grumps many years ago, but Arin's incredible toxicity and poor play was a huge turnoff, and I eventually grew to hate how they were butchering great games. I once heard a fantastic analogy for about the last minute there. Proceeding with life while ignoring reality is like taking your eyes off the road while you're driving. It is extremely unlikely that you will crash the instant you look away but the longer you continue ahead without your eyes on the road the closer to an inevitability the crash becomes. When it comes to ignoring reality, like the crash, if you're lucky...you'll survive it.

I just can't see Dave as a grifter. You can have a bad take and not be scheming for shekles. He's milquetoast at worst. With Candace, I feel she came out onto the public scene too soon after embracing another ideology, you can tell she didn't know what she was talking about; it's like being someone who just read Atlas Shrugged in college. Lately she sounds better, probably thanks to Larry Elder.

Exactly- honestly what you said about Candace perfectly describes that jre podcast with Rubin. He heard the arguments, understood them on a base level, but hadn’t gotten to the point where he understood them enough to be able to defend them. He just knew that “hey, this is better than I used to think, and I feel better as a result of these ideas, I wanna share!” And then proceeded to put his foot in his mouth. At least that’s how I see it🤷‍♂️

Candace Owens always gave me the same vibes as those youtube girls that make "fishing" content for older men... While exclusively wearing bikinis. She always gave me the vibe of "see old boomercons, I'm exactly what you want from a political commentator to validate and push your beliefs". She seemed to have the exact politics of older conservatives, but lacked the subtle variations that newer generations have put on Conservatism. TL;DR, I think she panders to boomer conservatives specifically, and I think that's sus.
