One of my best friends at my job is a 50something year old Russian - he said the Soviet times weren't bad and that workers were treated well at least. Everyone looks back on things with rose colored glasses though. Also the Nazis' system is more like China rather than somewhere like Finland or France that have social democracies

Had a similar experience. I would have identified as moderate left leaning back in 2016 but I didn't vote for either Trump or Clinton as I thought both were terrible candidates. After Trump won I was more amused than anything, but then I saw the policies, and I started doing some economic reading, and you just couldn't argue with the results.

Wow, I had a similar experience too. My "awakening" though was during the Covington Catholic kids fake story and also the Jussie Smollett hate crime hoax. Those events made me question why _we_ as a society, were supposed to be hating Trump and his supporters. So then I went on a quest to actually ask MAGA supporters about their viewpoints and I was overwhelmed by the responses that I got. They were not evil deplorables like I was told, most were just normal Americans who were fed up with corrupt politicians.

I used to be pretty left-wing. I even voted for Trudeau. This was during the feminist era with Anita Sarkisian. They kept talking about male privilege but all the women around me were treated like gold, while I was treated like dirt. I still bought into the rest for a long time, but that disconnect between the reality I was facing and the words she said started me down a path of questioning. Pretty sure the answer is just that reality is a pipeline to the right. We're seeing it now with the Biden Administration. In America anyway: Everyone thought they were all about "Green Energy" until they realized that we still need fossil fuels, and we're trying to buy it from Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela. Everyone thought they wanted socialist spending, until they realized inflation is at 40 year highs because you can't just spend your way into a functioning economy. Everyone thought it was ok for globalization to hollow out manufacturing, until you realize supply chain crisis are directly caused by having to get all your goods from overseas. Everyone thought the police were terrible and racist and evil, until they defunded them and saw record crime spikes including murders in every place it's tried. Now you see it in the polls, people got a good look at what happens when Democrats are in charge up close, and they don't like it.

And then you have people dismissing everything, forgetting that even if they're "healthy" they could still cause someone a lot of suffering by being apathetic (and actually, due to about 40 years of sugar-adulterated food in the West, most people are nowhere near as healthy as they think, not even close). A big problem, it must be said, is America's misappropriation of the word "freedom". It's a buzz word. Nobody else on the planet goes on about "freedom" so much while simultaneously not grasping the basic truths of functional society. So with America, is always all or nothing - hysteria and control... or a lunatic notion that society can function without any regulation. And we all take our cues from America now, for better or worse. Meanwhile here in the UK, we had a typically childish modern response - when the news hit that there was a disease on the loose, that it could cause death, that it could cause suffering, that even if you're young and healthy you could still infect your older loved ones... ...people did nothing. Oh, they pretended to. But nobody wore masks, and nobody stayed at home, not even for a single, solitary week. They just didn't do it. At all. Then when one week became two, they all started moaning "But we've been indoors for a week!" (they hadn't). When they were told that they were allowed to go out for a bit of exercise... suddenly, spontaneously, in the middle of the coldest, most dismal part of the year... more people went out into parks and up hills and into the countryside than had ever done so for the entirety of the year prior. Suddenly, because there was the hint of a restriction, like petulant teenagers, they all pretended that they HAD to go for a walk every day or they'd go insane - these were people who were normally couch potatoes. But then, what should we expect - before Covid, people had forgotten that they should cover their mouths when coughing, and not sneeze on other people. Now we just have the extremes. We have the hysteria, and the total indifference - we have people telling us we're going to die, and others telling us they don't care if we die. And speaking as someone with a chronic illness, and an almost non-functioning immune system who could genuinely die if I caught it... I find myself disliking both sides. It could have been done with, if people had been sensible. If discussions had actually gone on about things like uncontrolled flights around the planet without quarantine, and unrestrained immigration, and basic civil duty and self-restraint... But no. Here we are. My fiance's family all caught it just last week, because they went on holiday. The other daughter got it the worst, and nearly ended up in hospital. Someone at my fiance's workplace, their husband caught it, and the woman turned up to work anyway. I feel like it's only a matter of time. And maybe I'll get lucky, and I'll just spend two weeks feeling utterly bloody miserable. But I'll still hate both sides of this.

As a Libertarian having dated a modern liberal for 4 years, any time I pressed her on her opinions or beliefs that seemed like she was starting to go further left, she would just completely opt out of the conversation. It became worse when she started university, up to the point where we only agreed on things like legalizing weed or abortion rights. Disagreed on global warming, foreign policy, immigration, gun rights, etc. These types of people don't like having their worldview dissected or challenged. Which also leads me to believe that they don't come up with these opinions on their own, but amongst their hivemind friend groups. She also started using buzzwords like "marginalized, transphobic, micro-agression" and everything. Sad to witness in real-time.

I think it's more personal with Trump because they view him as a betrayer. Remember this guy was a New York Democrat in the 1990's, he donated to the Clintons, he had pictures with Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton, he was basically a typical democrat donor. Because culture is fleeting; it is shaped by necessity and circumstance of the moment, so for it to be permanently changed in any way would require a permanent change in the underlying necessities of life on this planet. Not enough time has passed for significant biological alterations to take place, and indeed, nature wouldn't implement such change readily, because history has repeatedly demonstrated that at the drop of a hat, technology can disappear as a result of changing circumstances and catastrophe, rendering all the OLD cultural and biological traits absolutely vital for survival. We can see this repeatedly come into play whenever an empire declines or collapses - just look at northern Europe in the immediate aftermath of the Roman Empire; just look at Anglo-Saxon poetry describing the ruins of "giants", as they describe old Roman towns and fortifications left to degenerate. The same patterns absolutely can repeat, and do repeat. Because it's not the individual circumstances that matter when we talk about history repeating; it's the human motivation and behaviour on display.

I used to believe that SJWs and Leftist ideology was fine and that they where just people with good intentions who wanted what was best for people. Your point #1 is actually one of the most prominent issues that has bothered me for some time. I'm Black and liberal, but I grew up around the south and central U.S. in predominantly (or nearly entirely) white communities. What you have described is exactly the strategy employed by the left, and it has been so effective that I would wager that most liberals and so-called "Progressives" today aren't even working that strategy - they just believe that everyone who is not in their camp is the most extreme form of right-winger possible, and that if they aren't evidently so they are secretly so. I didn't get radicalised by edgy humour, I got radicalised by seeing left wing violence, blatant left wing authoritarianism, learning in detail about life under Socialist regimes and finding out that I had a very misinformed view of free market economics and that a lot of problems in our economy are the direct result of the government getting involved in the private sector. I'm not even sure if I should even calling myself a radical, because I think that condemning Socialism and being anti-government are common sense. I still remember when I was kinda on the SJW side of things, back when it had more nuance and reasons to support it, the early 2010's, the tumblr days as I like to call it. What's the half-way position between the average person and a fascist? I'd say it's a strong belief in state power and authority. That's not exactly typical of the right, and it's certainly not the view of either the classical liberals or the conservatives held up as examples in this video. Of course, historically, you reach fascism via socialism - not exactly a 'right wing' perspective. Alternatively, let's say that to be 'alt right' is to be a white supremacist. Again, what's the half-way position between the average person and a white supremacist? I'm really not sure - maybe a particular love of nation and people. But even that isn't uniquely right wing. In fact, traditional right wing individualism seems rather at odds with an ideology that is all about racial collectives.
