Last April I walked into a music store in Chinatown and it was the first time I laid eyes on a guitarlele, I didn't know anything about the instrument my first impression was that it's a miniature nylon string guitar, so I started playing it like a classical guitar and although I didn't know the name of the strings, the sound I was getting out the guitarlele sounded like I knew how to play it, so now I know the song was just in a different key. Upon leaving the store the owner rushed to me gave me her business card and asked if I was Chinese, I told her no I'm Filipino, she asked me with a big smile on her face, "where did I learned to play the Guitarlele? I told her it was my first time playing it and that my instinct seeing it had 6 nylon strings I simply played it like a Classical guitar. I thanked the kind lady for her compliments and walked away happy because I was able to fill her heart with the joy of music, even if it was only for a brief and fleeting moment. I hear many ukulele players say that the ukulele is the instrument of peace and happiness I believe it is, and now I can say from experience that the Guitarlele has also the same effect.

Thank you for sharing this great story. I agree, although it can be played like a guitar and all the guitar chords work on it, because the strings are different it produces a completely different vibe and energy.

The point of Guitaleles is so that Uke players can get a fuller sound or get a more guitar sound for back up or lead, that's the main point. Guitar lovers are still guitar lovers, and not much interested in playing smaller instruments.
@Ukelikethepros6 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting point you bring up. Yamaha was one of the first to make a guitarlele and if you search youtube most videos are guitar players playing classical pieces on a guitarlele. Studio guitar players, such as myself, can also use the guitarlele to overdub a second guitar part to get different voicings and sounds. But to your point, most of my guitarlele videos will be geared for ukulele players. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Ukuleles are fun toys to me haha. Maybe a bassist would say the same about guitars.

Speak for yourself. I play guitar but didn't like the bassy and loud sound of a classical guitar, but I like the nylon string sound, so a guitalele sounds like a nice option.

I can see why it would be fairly easy to transition from guitar to guitarlele but what about from ukulele to guitarlele? I tried learning the guitar for about a year with no success. I switched to ukulele and fell in love with the ease and instant gratification! I love a bass sound so I would consider a guitarlele. The downside is more strings making chord shapes more complex, steel versus nylon strings making it harder on the fingers, learning entirely new shapes, etc. In addition, there is probably very little online as far as charts with chord shapes and songbooks. Aside from a fuller sound, what are the advantages? Thanks for your input!
@Ukelikethepros6 жыл бұрын
Great question and all really good points. Yes, the added strings make the chord shapes harder although some, like the F chord on the guitalele will only add 1 additional finger from the F chord on the ukulele. Although the neck on the guitalele is wider than a ukulele, I think it's easier than guitar because the size of the body. Since my guitalele is on the body of a tenor, it's much easier to handle than a full size guitar. My guitalele has all nylon strings, although the 2 new bass strings are wrapped in wire, the core of the string is nylon which makes it easier on the fingers then an all steel string like on acoustic guitars. As far as the material available for the guitalele, I'm about to change that.
@grege684 жыл бұрын
It would actually help ukulele people to move to guitar because someone like me that i cant play guitar for shit because the neck is too wide i can now play this and still have the fuller sound with a small neck
@johndubourt35583 жыл бұрын
I got one and it has nylon classical strings and my fingers aren’t used to them yet but I find it is easier to pic on this neat little instrument than on my guitar
@MalMotorDedo2 жыл бұрын
I'm very late, but wouldn't the shapes be easy to learn by watching guitar vids? Like, it's the same, but the lele is 2 and 1/2 tones higher. Y'all would be learning guitar, but w a thinner neck (as a guitar player, that's very neat IMO, cuz F*CK the wide neck)

I am 14 and got one a year ago for Christmas. I only know how to play ukulele so I have been just playing on the first 4 strings. I have tried guitar but it is a lot harder. can I just look up any guitar tutorial on KZbin and be able to play the cords the same on the guitarlele?
@Ukelikethepros6 жыл бұрын
Good question and I'm glad your playing the guitarlele. Yes you can look up any guitar tutorial and play it but remember the chords that th tutorials say will be the same shape but will be called different names on the guitarlele. For example a G chord on the guitar is called a C chord on the guitarlele. I will be posting lots of guitarlele videos here so stay tuned.

Normally, I wouldn't bother a You Tuber with a parts questions but you seem to know more about small stringed instruments than anyone else on the planet. So, I am in need of a bridge, saddle, nut kit for a guitalele but after an exhaustive search, I came up with bupkis. Any idea's ?

I’ve got a question For like half a year I’ve been playing the uke but i find this to be a really cool instrument, is it a good idea to jump over to this? Keep in mind that I’ve never played the guitar
@Ukelikethepros6 жыл бұрын
I really like the guitarlele as it provides an extended range and more possibilities than the ukulele because of the 2 extra strings. Plus it's much easier to play than a guitar because of the small body and length of the neck (both the same size as a tenor ukulele). The neck of the guitarlele is about 1/2 inch wider than a tenor ukulele which is actually not that much. Have you grab the free chord chart I have up? bit.ly/2PhXTZZ I have some great new guitarlele content coming soon. Here is a cool demonstration of a guitarlele that is up at my store bit.ly/2zny40M

I don't understand why would you change names of the chords
@Ukelikethepros6 жыл бұрын
Great question. Are you referring to the chords name from the guitar to the guitarlele? If so, it's because the guitarlele has a different tuning. The guitarlele (from high to low strings) is A - E - C - G - D - A. The guitar (from high to low strings) is E - B - G - D - A - E. So even though you can play the same chord shapes they will be called different names.
