It’s a bit misleading to say, at 0:53, that “the smaller the body the higher the pitch.” The fundamental pitches are identical regardless of the body size. But smaller bodies cause the accompanying overtones/harmonics (higher pitches above the fundamental pitch) to yield a more trebly sound.

After watching a lot of tutorials i came to the conclusion that the concert ukulele is the one to go for the following reasons: 1. it's hard to play any melody on a soprano uke due to it's size and the fact that it has fewer frets. Also the chords are limited to fret 5 or so, unless you can somehow manage to arrange your fat fingers properly to play anything higher 2. baritone ukulele i don't want to even discuss but - just cut 5th and 6th strings of your acoustic guitar and you are set. Only the size is a bit smaller, but then again you can buy a 3/4 , 2/4 guitars etc 3. tenor - exact same problem as the baritone , it's more of a guitar size really and again you have to cut your 5th and 6th string and put a capo on the 5 fret. If i would bother bringing a tenor ukulele to a party or w/e, i think i would bother bringing a proper acousting guitar as well.

The tenor ones with high g are the best IMO. I've got both tenor and soprano and I feel the soprano is more of a toy. Really, only strumming low fret chords are acceptable, when you go bit higher for some variations it's always out of tune. The tenor one with high g, as the guy in the video said, still sounds like the ukulele should, moreover it can make satisfying, full sound playing both chords and single notes. Playing single notes sounds sometimes like a harp to me, it's beautiful. Also the tuning is fine, I originally play the guitar and the high g is something fresh and mind opening. I'm about to buy me some new ukulele and it's gonna be tenor again. Cheers😊
@shimonami8960 Жыл бұрын
cut your 5th and 6th string from your guitar and soon your neck will be twisted due to the unevenly tension applied... also by your logic, a bass is just a guitar without the 1st and 2nd string... for me baritone and guitalele are my options to go, I like the low and mids on those type of ukes, and they have just so much personality that I can't see it being replicated on a guitar, even with capo
@5skdm Жыл бұрын
@@shimonami8960I think he just means with "cutting" is muting the strings or just not playing them (but, it's kind of annoying), but yes I think the smaller sizes of baritones and guitaleles compared to guitars still gives it a different character

I got a soprano and I'm happy. Finally an accompanying instrument that has a similar range to mine. I never really liked the guitar because of the lower pitch. Besides, the soprano on this guy looks tiny, but I'm quite petite, so I feel it really suits me. I think it's something about the audio through the video that makes the soprano here sound kinda too loud. In real life it sounds beautiful (for my taste). Also, I do play single notes on it. But I'm only learning, so maybe in the future I will consider a concerto. For now, I travel a lot, so that's another reason for me to want the smaller one. I love my uke :)

I picked up a tenor in Milan, Italy because I missed having a guitar while backpacking in Europe for months. @@Ukelikethepros this might sound like a silly question, but do the tenor ukuleles differ when it comes to the high and low G? so can any tenor ukulele just be tuned to a low or high G or do you need to by a specific ukulele with either a low or high g?
@kaii89854 жыл бұрын
@@sophieparkinson4957 I know you asked this months ago, but just in case: Most tenor ukuleles come sold in commercial stores with high G tuning, so most of time (in my experience) you would need to buy a low G string and set it up. However, if there are particular retailers like the Ukulele Site (which is online and in-store), there is an option to have them set up with the low G when you buy an ukulele. It depends on where you live, of course, but online resources are very convenient--whether it be for a single low G string (which they sell) or for an ukulele set up with it. Hope this helps a little.

Great video! I have an 8-string Tenor and I absolutely LOVE it! the E and A strings are doubled, but the G and C strings are 1 octave apart... provides a really rich sound! (Also, as a tenor-leaning alto with LONG fingers, I find it much easier to play and sing with than the concert) :)

Played guitar for 10+years. Never had an issue. I've found that with ukulele my fretting hands thumb muscles get strained constantly on anything smaller than a tenor. This is probably do to my short stent as a professional athlete and breaking both if my thumbs in a weird sequence of events! For you guys with larger hands and previous injuries make sure you choose something that is VERY comfortable. I've had to trade my ukes back in multiple times and am still looking for one that doesn't cause pain in my hands!

I really like the sound of the tenor, although the concert ukelele is good too. I hope I'll be able to get one. It's really fun learning instruments and I hope my parents allow me to buy even a second hand one :') Sorry, parents.

I like the tender and the baritone ukuleles same with recorders as well because a lot of kids play the soprano, ukuleles and soprano recorders, and they’re really common as well to be different

I have 5 ukuleles. The one I use most is my 6 string "Lili'u". I won a Kamaka concert at our uke festival. I also have a steel string Leonard Young made of North American maple that I used instead of a pickup when I was performing solo. Your tutorial is excellent.

If you are playing ukulele and want to move to guitar, a parlour size guitar is a good place to start - they have a small body for a guitar, and a shorter scale length from nut to bridge saddle which means the string tension is less than on a standard guitar. All of this makes for a more comfortable play if you are a guitar beginner. I've been playing acoustic guitar for many years and bought my first parlour guitar just a couple of years ago and it was a revelation!

I'm an old guitar player (50+ years) and I'm buying a ukuele to take traveling. It's an instrument that I can put in overhead storage on an airplane and won't take up much space in any car. With neuropathy in my left (fretting) hand, I'm not about to totally relearn the fretboard so I'm opting for a baritone. Same top 4 strings as a guitar. (I say top to mean the higher frequencies.) In for a penny, in for a pound so I'm adding a Fishman pickup so that I have the option to carry that instrument along to performances as well. It may make it easier to invite other players in open mic situations. Multiple guitars don't always make it but uke, guitar, harmonica, fiddle & bass can sound sweet together.

Perfect, great idea. I love the baritone. Matter of fact just did a photoshoot today with my baritone for the new baritone course I have coming up in a few weeks. Keep me posted on your progress.

Thanks for that as an absolute beginner your video is very helpful. I have watched a few others and still did not know which one to buy - now i do. I liked the tenor but will take your advice to buy a concert ukulele - and i was pronouncing it wrong. :)

I'm five feet tall with tiny hands and I always look really funny playing a tenor or a baritone ukulele- it basically looks like I'm holding a guitar! Those two have to be my favorite sizes however as I prefer the deeper richer sound.

Yes, both the tenor and the baritone are great instruments and I agree with you, I also prefer their size and deeper tone.

There are also GCEA strings for the Baritone Ukulele, I haven't seen or played one because I haven't come across one yet in any music store that's tuned GCEA, if you have a Baritone Ukulele with DGBE strings, you have the option. Terry that would be a good video to compare a DGBE and a GCEA Baritone Ukulele. Thanks for making informative and comparative Ukulele videos.
@Ukelikethepros6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is a great point. I think many people get tenor ukulele strings with a low G and then put them on a baritone and tune it G C E A. I happen to have a baritone in D G B E and G C E A tuning here in the studio.

I love the ukulele!!! It’s so fun to play! I have two ukuleles! My first ever one is a concert, I got that one for my birthday back in August, then I got my second, which is a tenor, for Christmas! I’m still getting used to the tenor cause it’s a bit bigger than a concert haha! I was actually inspired to play the ukulele by my favorite singer! Her name is Mandy Harvey! If you don’t know who she is than you should look her up cause she is AMAZING!! I actually got to met her too!! She’s the girl I’m hugging in my profile pic!

I should've watched this before I ordered a Ukelele but I ordered a Soprano and I think it will be fine for me.
I have a Baritone Uke tuned GCEA with Living Water custom GCEA strings. It sounds somewhat like a Tenor, but maybe with a more mellow tone. I like it because it fits for my larger hands and my lower voice when singing. Don't understand why more folks aren't doing this? The GCEA fits the music too for my Ukulele group. Lots of Uke makers are doing a Super Tenor, etc--which is very similar to a GCEA Baritone. One can even experiment with different strings to get a unique sound. Works good for jazz and blues music. I don't see any disadvantages of a GCEA Baritone for me.
