Great video. I think you should also talk about catch cans on the CA18. There's some great diagrams for the best setups on Nico Club, including running dual catch cans.

I've always been skeptical about the CA18DET "oil drain issue" since it was first posited. The CA didn't really get extensive racing development like the RB back in the day but I presume the designs are largely similar and RB is a development of CA earlier (1985) design. Finally had a good look at a spare CA head yesterday, there are FOUR oil drains. The CA18DET is canted over at 15° to the exhaust side, so really it's 3 drains on the exhaust side and 1 breather on the inlet, admittedly the rearmost drain could be bigger. There is another breather to the sump at the back of the inlet cam cover. I think the real issue might be excess blow-by trying to push return oil back up the drain holes!
@JarrodWillemse Жыл бұрын
i agree for most almost stock applications the factory breather system and oil drain is ok. Only for those with higher rpm, high flow oil pumps, loose ring gaps and high boost need to think about head drains.
@ChrisB200SX Жыл бұрын
Do you know at what rate oil is pumped to the head? Turbo feed should be around 500-2000cc per minute. I'm just trying to figure out at what rate oil needs to return.
@JarrodWillemse Жыл бұрын
@@ChrisB200SX its going to depend on the oil pressure and what oil you are running. ALso what rpm you wish to rev to. Older worn engines will have lower pressure due to clearances.

@@JarrodWillemse after much more research, I've come to the conclusion this likely isn't really the case and the stock setup should be fine for good condition engines even pushing double the standard power. I recommend cleaning out the wiggly blow-by pipe from the inlet cam cover to near the oil filter. The RB26DETT had a distinct lack of oil return/breathers, this was discovered and resolved through racing development where they added oil returns. The CA18DET doesn't really have the same physical problem... oil not returning and pooling in the head (causing starvation) tends to be an issue for old, and likely poorly maintained, engines. This often presents with the wiggly metal breather pipe (at the back pf the inlet cam cover) being clogged and this is the main breather from sump to head, if blow-by gasses can't get through easily here they will force returning oil back up the 3 generous oil return holes on the exhaust side. I've had no issues with 350bhp (GT2871R setup) and high revs on my rebuilt engine and I'm fairly sure all the blown engines I've heard about over 20+ years have mostly been old and/or poor condition engines rather than rebuilt engines with a clean oem breather system. But, hey, it's not the most difficult mod on the CA and really shouldn't cost a lot, so it can't hurt, I'm just highly doubtful that it's as necessary as people have been lead to believe because of the issues with RB oil return and blow-by pressure breathing.

Amazing info! I rebuilt my CA18det with the stock internals and turbo and been wondering whether I'd need a head drain or not

My ca18det was smoking a little i thought it was my headgasket but turns out its my turbo, will the smoke stop if i make the oil drain lower than my turbo?
@JarrodWillemse10 ай бұрын
the drain from the turbo should always be lower than the turbo and ideally return to a higher point in the sump. Make sure the hose is also not kinked. If those are right then you could look at oil seals in the turbo.

Thanks for the content! Where are you located Australia ?! I did a quick search for head drain kits for ca18 but can't find much... seems most kits are for RB.. do you know a specific brand ?
@JarrodWillemse Жыл бұрын
Hey yes im in Melbourne Australia. People are using -10an fittings that are used for welding and just press them into the head. 90srustfab.bigcartel.com/product/ca18det-oil-head-drain-kit

So as a ca18de (non turbo car) that I’m drifting, I “should” be okay without a head drain?
@JarrodWillemse Жыл бұрын
Yeh unless it’s high comp I wouldn’t bother. You won’t have the same crank case pressure as boosted applications.
