How do we make a game try when the opponents take away the bidding space we need to do so?
Bidding our agreed major suit at the three level is just to play, while bidding anything higher commits us to game without the chance to consult partner.
The solution: double, known here as the maximal double, which is a game try.

How does partner know you aren’t doubling for penalties

There is a simple agreement not to play it for business.

Dbl means 'Pard can you bid game?' 3 of our suit is competitive (cant be 5332 I guess). But the hand here is worth 4 h. and even clear for 4 cl, to look for a double fit, since the opps will bid 4sp or 5 dia over for 4 hearts. Then you can decide whether to bid more.

I don't think this is a good example of a maximal double - you only have a 13 count - but you have nice shape. If partner has Kxx hearts and Kxx of clubs only then you still want to be in 4H - so I think the bid here is 4Hearts. A maximal double is more like a hand such as Axx, AQxxx, x, AQxx

This is a good convention but you don't need 11 minutes to cover it. You could add other types of doubles: support, responsive etc. so the student has a more useful overview for the time spent.
