During Business hours the merchant Terminal/POS machine sends payment txns to the payment gateway to determine if the card was authorized or declined for the payment amount specified. The payment gateway sends the request to card companies(VISA/AMEX/MC) for them to issue the Approve or Decline status. At the end of the day the merchant sends the list of all approved payments for that day to the payment processor for clearing(txn verification) and settlement(moving the money from the buyers card issuing bank to the merchants account).

Yes there is. Payment Service providers are companies like Paypal, Stripe and Paypal. Payment Gateways are companies like Authorize.net, CardPointe or NMI.com. Merchant account providers and payment service providers a.k.a. "PSP's" are different. The terminology is similar but they are different. I'm about ready to release a video the compares PSP's and Merchant accounts so stay tuned for that. Coming out soon.
