WHAT IS A PERFUME ACCORD? What're The Differences Between Perfume Notes And Perfume Accords?
What is an accord? So an Accord in perfumes is similar to chords in music. When you combine or play together multiple notes or keys or tones they form a new sound. So this idea is similar to perfumes. Replace tones in music with the notes in perfume and you pretty much have an idea of what an accord in perfumes is. Basically, it is a coordinated mix of essences or perfume notes carefully blended which creates a brand new note or altogether a brand new fragrance. From my research, this is not something that’s easy to do perfectly. So it does take time to create an accord. And once it’s perfected you cannot easily recognize the original notes that went into creating that new accord as it’s now become a brand new note. But basically, you want to create a smell that you use other smells to create that smell.
Once you have an accord you can simply add it to alcohol in this case perfumers alcohol and you can use it as is or you can further add notes to it to give it more twists of that accord and make a unique perfume.
A few of the reasons to create accords would be because.
1: Expensive Raw Materials
2: Cannot Extract Essence From Certain Flowers Or Plants
-Lilac, Lily-Of-The-Valley, Leather, Fig and more
3: Create an accord it always smells the same but sometimes because of the environment certain ingredients will smell different from one harvest to another. So the reason to create an accord if you fear your perfume changing each harvest.
Chypre accord: Bergamot, Labdanum, Oakmoss (Sometimes Patchouli)
Amber accord: Benzoin, Labdanum, Vanilla vs being listed as an amber
Fougere Accord: Lavender, Oakmoss, Coumarin/Tonka Bean
Or Lavender, Bergamot, Geranium, Oakmoss, Coumarin/Tonka bean

Technically, a note and an accord can mean the same thing. I look at it this way: A note, whether it's amber or rose or vanilla, is what we detect with our own noses. However, an accord is the process that goes into making that note. So for instance, if I wanted a rose note in a fragrance I was creating, I would combine the necessary materials into an accord to create that particular smell I'm going for. In other words, accords = input, notes = output.

You did an excellent job of putting this into laymen's terms. As a budding/hobbyist perfumer, the concept of "accords" was a bit confusing to me, as it can encompass a variety of things. For example, I've created fig, magnolia and pear notes/accords only using aroma chemicals (i.e. not plant/fruit extractions). But, as you said, sometimes an accord can replicate classic perfume styles like chypre, amber and fougere scents. Great vid! I, too, love lilac and would love to hear your recommendations!

Thanks Seb, that was really interesting! I love when you do educational videos. I loved the Tonka bean one and also the Resins video. Even though I'm a woman who watches mostly female perfume reviewers you happen to be my favorite! Quick question for anyone watching. So I love patchouli specifically when it smells like chocolate. So question is, When patchouli smells like chocolate it's because of other blending notes with the patchouli right?Or does Patchouli just smell like chocolate sometimes? So would it be a chocolate accord? Just curious..... If it is, I guess chocolate would be my favorite accord. Lol sorry for the super long comment.

The musical chords analogy is very good. I am wondering how perfumers avoid making "unintentional" accords when combining desired notes.

Some food for thought: within Music you have the concept of the harmonic series which gives rise to the C major scale which then give rise to the 7 modes (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian etc) and chords. What would the harmonic series look like in chemistry? What molecule(s) contain all potential notes and their subsequent accords?? What does the circle of 5ths look like within perfumery?

This is great because, for example, Bvlgari Falkar: Bvlgari describes it as an oud fragrance, but is also often described as a dark woods accord. Maybe because a lot of people, other than fragheads like us, are still unfamiliar with what oud is. But everyone can understand a woodsy scent

I’ve always thought of them like the olfactory equivalent of musical “chords” which is a synergistic set of notes that sound “good” together. Of course I use “good” loosely here. It’s all art. Also as in music, there’s a timing aspect. Notes and chords occur at different chronological points. 🙏

great video do you or anyone who reads this might know why i can smell certain fragrances all day long ever second with every breath? while others i stop detecting a lot after an hour and then i only detect them every so often of after applying them while my family says they can still detect them way after i applied it, although if air is moving a lot because of the air vents then i can smell it more? for an example, feve delicieuse by dior or epic man by amouage i can detect all day on me easily but oud ispahan or oud palao i struggle to detect after short amount of time while those around me say they have no problem smelling it, both cases has happened with many other fragrances, not just these 4 its a shame because i would really love to purchase ispahan or palao since they some of favorites but i dont know if should based on this and it does not seem to matter how little or how much i apply is it maybe related to my allergies? my allergies are so bad that i get an allergy shot every week to get rid of them, but can it affect my sense of smell maybe?

I don't think that fougeres or chypres are accords, but classes/family of fragrances. Accords are a couple of notes that create a feeling, for example a forest accord made by cypress, rosemary, oakmoss and woody notes. You will get that fresh, sharp, green and woodsy scent specific to a forest. So, we have notes, accords and classes/families of fragrances. The DNA is made by notes shared between the OG and its flankers so the OG and the flankers have at some point (usually in the dry down) a similar scent. The best example is indeed the A*Men line. In Ultra Zest we have an orange popsicle/ice cream accord, while in Pure Malt we have a fuity-boozy accord. Both share the DNA so the dry downs are kinda similar: cozy patchouli.
@ThePerfumeGuy
@ThePerfumeGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Yes they are families or classes of fragrances but to accomplish the chypre accord for example you need bergamot, labdanum and oakmoss!
@TheJDWyatt
@TheJDWyatt 4 жыл бұрын
Good points, Andrei, and I tend to agree w/ you; fragrance families, like chypre, are not what I personally consider accords. That said, I've heard perfumers and materials suppliers talk about fougere, amber and oriental accords. Great example w/ the "Boozy Accord" - currently a popular one (also called rum, whiskey, etc. accord)!

There is actually an Amber note. Based on destructive distillation from fossillized Amber. Which many perfumers do not have access to it or the know-how on the distillation techniques.

Such an interesting video! Is the accord created on a molecular level? When combining 2 or 3 notes or molecules do you then create a completely different molecule? Or are they fluidly held together within the fragrance to make this accord smell?
@aquababy5
@aquababy5 4 жыл бұрын
Alice Cw the ingredients aren’t changing chemically, so the latter. The combination of notes (ingredients) itself tricks your nose into smelling something else, which is the accord.

Amber accord is my favorite. I wonder if many perfumers will be forced to create a kiwi 🥝 accord due to Australia fires destroying kiwis. Many perfumes I wear have that fruit in it so I’m debating on buying backup bottles since formulas may be changed soon. What do you think 🤔?
