I wasn't in a rush to do the 2-piece because I have't decided whether to use PVA or double-sided tape to join the 2 pieces. I think most institution would use double-sided tape. But not many home binders will have access to archivally sound double-sided tape. And I'm reluctant to use my super expensive tape I use for Mylar encapsulation.... DAS

This brings me back! I used to work in the book repair lab of a library, and I would make so. many. phase boxes. But we did them with two parts, so it's interesting seeing a new way of making them! Thank you for sharing!

It's remarkable how- thanks to such large scale actions- the techniques of dealing with mass destruction in archives evolved. For example floods- nowadays the books are frozen to prevent them from destruction beacause it's sometimes impossible to deal with all of them at once. Modern conservation is capable of some unbelivable actions 😀 The kind of box You've presented is especially suitable from a conservators point of view beacause it's a single piece- which means it doesent require any glue that might not be stable enough to be used for long term storage. As a volunteer in the restauration department of the museum Plantin-Moretus in Antwerp, I've already made dozens of this type of box (in a stiffer corrugated cardboard) for storage of (larger) books with metal hinges or decorations so that they dont damage their neighbours while sitting in their shelf.

What an honour to get to handle those books! The fluted board is a bit harder to work with and you have to take into consideration the thickness of the board. But I bet after the first dozen or so you have it down! Do they put an image of the spine on the box? I wish all libraries did that. Nothing worse than looking for a specific style of binding and just seeing a wall of phase boxes. Thanks for sharing! Darryn

@@DASBookbinding sorry, no spine image - just the id number. It’s for storage in the temperature contolled vault with closed movable shelves. For fragile books displayed in the 16th century library of the printing house, a book heel is used - smaller slipcase that isnt visible on the shelves

Thank you! I have a similar book (Unity of Good) by the same author in what seems to be the same style of binding. I bought it for the fantastic cover in which the leather texture makes the gilt cover emblem appear to float.

I think I prefer the 1 piece construction. It doesn't save much material and you don't get the corner flaps, so there can be slight opening at the corners. I think the main reason institutions like the 2-piece construction is that it is easier to make. DAS

I've watched this one a couple of times already Darryn. It's such a simple thing yet also quite lovely and certainly immensly practical. I'm thinking that this would be an excellent way of protecting books that you have to send in the post or put in long term storage. Add in the great background on how they came about and this is certainly going to be one of those videos I watch several times. I'll also be spending a lot of time reading/watching all those great links you provided. While professional conservation is always going to be way beyond me those sources will no doubt provide me with a wealth of information that I can use in my everyday life to help prolong the life of my books. 👍

Love the historical commentary as well as the demo. You commented that you hadn't decided to do the 2 part phase box based on the adhesive choices you had available. Don't mean to make work for you, but how about developing closures based on NO ADHESIVES?? I may just be talking thru my hat, but m a y b e there would be some means of closure based on ORIGAMI folds? Or some other interlocking mechanism?? Just throwing it out there. (Sometimes my mind works overtime, which often times means more work for myself ... and my fella!! 😂)

The main issue is that it would produce an uneven side that might impress into the object inside the enclosure. Plus the extra time. Places doing these want speed. The 2 piece design using double sided tape is very fast to make.

It's in the form of picture, film, map, etc combined in a book. that helps a salesman to promote brands. I am sure you will get good number of views specially from South East Asian countries.

Leather wouldn't really work as a conservation enclosure. But there is a thing called a chemise, which is often made with leather. DAS

I think it’s the same direction of the book

Not a lot in the 1 piece construction. Half the folds will be against the grain. I guess it is best to have the longer folds in the grain direction. With the 2-piece construction you can do all the folds in the grain direction.

Hello, I want to start a handmade notebook business, do you recommend me use the lumbeck method (double fan binding) or the sewing method?

I assume you mean notebooks like a personal diary not taking notes in class. In which case most people expect this type of notebook to take years of use and last a long time. Lumbecking doesn't provide that. But neither does the simple "Coptic sewing" used by many people. At a minimum I'd do round and backed case binding with a sewn-on endpaper guarded with cloth, with supported sewing. Hope this helps. DAS

Yep, 300gsm or 10pt in America. A bit heavier might be better. But that is what I have lots of.
