Platonic relationships are arguably the most important relationships you can have. Even if what you want is a romantic relationship it won’t be successful without a foundation of a strong friendship. So why not be friends first…start with a platonic relationship. One way to avoid being a booty call is to tell that person who wants sex but not a relationship is “We can have a platonic relationship.” That person will either go away or possibly stick around if he or she cares for you. It’s a good test. I am one of those people who requires a healthy relationship in order to have sex so I am going to want to build that friendship foundation.

If I could give advice to my younger self I’d tell him to embrace plutonic relationships because they are more than friendships. Woman use “I like you as a friend” as a legitimate mechanism to gently let guys down and you need to learn to accept and respect it because something truly special can grow from that. My partner and I started as romantic interests but it quickly became plutonic and we only now just accepted it after eight years together. We own a home, own dogs, invest together, bicker, laugh, travel together, we just don’t have sex. It’s actually thee most meaningful bond that I’ve ever had with a person and if im romantically involved with someone they need to accept that she will always be a part of my life. I trust her more than anyone else i know she will care for me through anything because I have the life receipts to prove it. When he says you’re lucky if you find this, he’s right because it’s actually more solid and pure that what I think you could find in a romance that hasn’t been weathered through great lengths of time. So if you find that, appreciate it because you are very lucky. We need to move past old ideas of what relationships were in the past because, let’s face it, they don’t work anymore like society says they should.

I definitely think my best friend and I have a platonic relationship going on. We’ve known each other for a few years and it evolve about a year and a half ago into what it is. When life got tough for us, we always had our backs. Other people assume we’re more than that, but the truth is we really are just very deep platonic friends with similar goals and interests. I consider myself very lucky to have a person in my life so have this deep bond with that has no intention of going romantic or sexual, especially since I am Aroace and am sex repulsed.

Yes, it could. In fact, sex is 80% about lust, nothing secret much about love. So whenever someone tells you that sex is part of your love and its nature and it's healthy and some shit. It is love as in loving another person as your best friend, someone with who we can always be ourselves, to rely on etc, but it's not love that a boyfriend and girlfriend would have. The assumption is that a platonic relationship requires mutuality, so in order for it to function, the feeling should exist on both sides. I had a great platonic relationship with a married female colleague for two years. I am also happily married. However one day she told me she wanted to have an emotional relationship (potentially sex) with a man who was a rogue, who she admitted she found attractive and charming but still did not fully trust - and I knew he would treat her badly, and said so. Platonic love is another name for 'promised' mutual companionship with suppressed sexuality. There hide a very distorted view on sex. If sex comes out of love, so be it. It'll be beautiful.
