Xavi, iniesta, xabi, cesc, silva, cazorla, mata, javi martinez and before them guti, pep. Any national team would be grateful to have any one or two of them, but spain had the fortune to get all of them at the same time.

I think they omitted Busquets because a substantial part of his game was defensive competence, and maybe this overshadowed his passing and ability to control tempo etc. That said I wouldn't call Xavi a regista, he simply didnt play deep enough to me.

I think Busquets is omitted because he is not a good example of a Regista. His highlight vids show progressive balls being played a lot, but those are ‘highlights’. His game to game play, had a much more limited range and lack of ball progression; shorter passes that allowed his team to reposition+ he was lumbered with a lot more defensive responsibility than your typical Regista.

I don't want to be disrespectful but to say Busquets was not a progressive passer is staggering, he had extremely high output in these terms (even when comparing to midfielders generally). Likewise his contribution to assists/shot creating actions. He was far more a regista than Xavi, who largely played as 8 for Barca and Spain (and frequently a free 8 or even 10 under Guardiola)

It’s the spot I like to play too. I can’t quite sprint like I used to. But I’m still pretty quick. My strong suits are my first touch and passing and am usually tough enough to shield the ball away from my opponents when necessary. I don’t mind being under pressure either. Being in the middle gives me 360 degrees of freedom while being on the wing cuts that in half. I also like putting in the defensive work as well and try to intercept as much as possible.

I see quite a few people with a slightly misconceived idea, so I'll just add this point: ‘Regista’ only means playmaker. The term addresses function; it has nothing to do with position. Although it is usually used for deep-lying playmakers, it isn't restricted to them. The word ‘Trequartista’ on the other hand addresses position and refers to a player between the lines of midfield and attack. The two can overlap. Modrić (during his days at Dinamo Zagreb), Riquelme, Totti, etc. are all examples of such players.

Don’t always nod along in agreement making every show one sided, but even more importantly, can disagree on a subject and present valid arguments for both sides in a calm and levelheaded manner. No disagreements just for the sake of violent arguing. In modern football, Ancelotti is the 1st complete regista which can tackle & pass short or long. Heres a question... could Fabian Schär play this role for Newcastle United? Has the ability to intercept, tackle, shoot from long range and his successful long range assists are there to see. Hardly an Alonso, but Schär can play long accurate passes and is good on the ball at beating the press. Albeit very slowly compared to a Busquets.
