HI Kristen. I'm an old guy DM who's gotten back into the game to run my grandson and his friends through Forgotten Realms. My last game was with the 3.5 rules. These 5th edition rules seem to be very easy to follow! Still, for an old guy like me new rules are a challenge! You explain the rules in a very simple straightforward way mam! Thank you and all these other youtubers out there for your effort and dedication!

How about saving throws for ranged attack like pistol? How does that work?
@KristensEpicAdventures2 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve! So glad the video was helpful! Did you start playing yet? Thanks so much for watching 🤓

Weapon attacks don't use saving throws, the attack roll is compared to target's Armor Class (AC) score. A saving throw is for a spell attack that could possibly be avoided. Hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching 🤓

Great video. It's amazing how often the base mechanics can get a little confusing. @@KristensEpicAdventures it will be this coming Sunday… Sometimes I feel over prepared, but then other times I feel like there’s so much I’m not ready for. And I don’t have the confidence yet to think on the fly. But that will all come the more I DM. I’m used to playing AD&D, but never being a DM, and still understanding 5e rules.

How did it go? You will definitely get used to the rules the more you play. I still feel over and under prepared at the same time after 6 years LOL (probably because the players always seem to do what you least expect).

Friday, my 14th level paladin was attacked by a CR2 Intellect Devourer. He failed the Intelligence save through rolling a 3 on the dice, plus his 5 from charisma. It took control of his body and he damn near killed the party before they snuck in a heightened Hold Monster spell. I have always been careful to keep an eye on Will Saves, but never worried about intelligence saves. I will now. They are all important.

I'm trying to move from 2e to 5e and the systems are completely different. So different that what the text described didn't make sense to me. I kept thinking that there must be a way for higher level creatures to have a greater resistance to a lower level creature's spells. It's all in the modifiers (both ways), I guess. So I get it now. Thanks!

Also to answer your question, no you don't always make a saving throw. The person attacking might roll a 20-sided die to see if their spell "hits" the target or the enemy might make a "saving throw" roll to try and avoid the effects of a spell. Each spell description will tell you if you need to make an attack roll or if the target needs to make a save roll.... Hope this helps! 🤓
@MarkMcMillen21122 жыл бұрын
I just can't understand why people keep saying 5e is "less complicated" than previous versions of the game. Maybe better than 4e, but if you compare these saving throw mechanics with that of B/X or even 1e, there's just no comparison. 5e is an order of magnitude more complicated and I would argue it's not even better, just different with many more options and pluses upon pluses. No thinks.

How is this game fun? Its math and dice. "Troll comes at you with a sword, what do you do?! Quickly, your life is at stake!" Me, "Ok, OK! Lets see, 5 plus 2 is 7, with my 8 dice roll is 13, minus 2 for terrain, and minus another 2 because its dark...." I walk into a pub, roll a d20 to see if your dexterity is enough to work a doorknob. I want to ask this dude in the corner if he's seen this massive dragon, roll a dice to see if you can form words with your mouth. Oh, you rolled a 4, I guess you forgot how to use words.
