I was thinking the same thing. In this particular example it looks like you'd be much better off just carrying that momentum up hill. Granted, if that log was indeed a tree that you had to go around, it would be a bit of a different story.

Thanks for this great video Blake! Always great to learn from you! I was wondering, could you explain to us the technique to kinda "half" scandi flick without brakes? What I mean is the technique you three guys did when recording that challenge going downhill without brakes and taking that left or right burm at the end. That was another pretty awesome video by the way! Cheers!

Technically that would even be a "proper" Scandinavian flick, they're normally done with not much or no brakes at all (at least in the automotive world, and at least not locking up the wheels) 😅

This is definitely a skid technique. If you watch the pro riders do a scandi flick, roost or schralp, they are squaring off the corner at the apex and unloading the rear, barely using the brakes

If you're doing it right it's not a skid, just a loss of traction. You tap the brake to loosen the rear wheel, but the wheel should still be turning. That way the tire's not dredging up piles of soil. Unfortunately, he's showing more of a pure skid.

I find this hilarious! Whenever I ride with fast guys, they always say to do stuff like this because it makes you faster, but whenever I ride with kind of slow people, they always complain Haha whenever I take people down the trails that I personally built I’d make sure I ride however the heck I want haha. But I do catch myself feeling guilty doing that on the other trails 🤷‍♂️

Yes because you're not actually skidding, the point of the flick is to break traction without loosing speed, so using the brakes the least possible is ideal
@bertrandolf9733

It scratches up the packed material, rain washes it away, what's left is debris. Sure it depends on how many riders come by but that just determines if it takes a season or many years but it also creates points of attack for heavy rains to wash out whole torrents - no additional bikers needed for that. Skidding is bad manners, don't do it. It is destructive and a disservice to the image of mountain biking in the eyes of the general public. Its effects create severe difficulties with forestry management and authorities during the approval processes for trail construction. On the other hand a rolling tire helps pack, create and save a trail so even hikers would love us. Takes many riders to roll over where one has skidded, if it rains in between, some of the small material is gone. Weniger anzeigen

@olivierleduc7305
@olivierleduc7305 10 ай бұрын
@@petersilie2432 yeah i find that its mainly for fun... the flick is used in cars to make sure you dont plow into understeer wich is kinda rare on bikes with the moving CG of the rider. perhaps on really loose gravel but event then if you look at supermoto, they never initiate a drift doing this as they only move the CG offset to the braking axis of the tires and the rear moves out of the right side naturally same happens on a dh bike in gravel.
@gs_weiss
@gs_weiss 10 ай бұрын
@@olivierleduc7305 exactly. You can move your weight on a bike, you can't in a car - strapped into a seat and your body weight is minor compared to the vehicle. Swinging the rear out to lighten it and break the rear tires free is the best way to achieve that pendulum effect. But on a bike you can just move your body and swing the bike around a tight corner. Very very very few instances I can think of where this is anything more than just for the fun of sliding and feeling weightless for ishts and giggles.

Ahh, the brake roost, aka the fake roost, probably not great for trails, this is how berms get those annoying brake bumps. You can do this without brakes if you do the same movement as a nose manual and flick your rear end over, no front brake either, learn it on a brakeless bmx in the skatepark first, its surprisingly easy to do sideways skidding type things on a brakeless bike on smooth cement.

Thing is, if you’re doing it properly, you’re not really skidding. It’s twisting the body while unweighting the bike- slightly different. Skidding is jamming the brake while your weight is still through the bike. Subtle difference.

Ride it, don't slide it. Learn how to ride without wrecking and hyper-eroding the trails. The "Skandi Flick" which isn't new, and isn't called the "Skandi Flick", has always been a blatant sign of just plain poor riding and crap trail etiquette toward trial builders, maintainers, and other riders. Might as well promote trail-widening and trail-eroding ride-arounds for features you don't have the skill to ride, and mud-spinning ruts a while you're at it. Great work GMBN. Unsubbed.
