The complement of a set X will equal the empty set if and only if X equals the universal set, since if X equals the universal set then there are no elements not in X - so its complement is empty. Similarly, if a set is NOT the universal set, then there ARE elements not in it, so its complement would be non-empty. Does that help?

Thanks for watching and for the question! No, we could call the universal set anything we want, but calling it U is pretty common because it is intuitive, U for universal! We also don’t need to use an equals sign to describe this, but again it’s just easy to do it that way so that’s how we do it often times. We could say “Let U = {1, 2} be the universal set.” This means that the set {1, 2} is the universal set. The “U =” is not part of the set, it’s just part of a statement. So in this case the universal set is {1, 2}, but if we don’t need to see the elements in it we could just refer to it as U since we said that U = {1, 2}. We could also say “Let {1, 2} be the universal set, and call it S”. Then the universal set is {1, 2}, and if we wanted to we could also just refer to it as S. Does that answer your question?

Thanks for watching and for the question! I think this is a strange question because U is not really a "universal set" in this problem. If we introduce a universal set, it should contain the elements of all sets involved in the problem. In other words, every set we consider should be a subset of the universal set. In this case, neither S nor T have any elements in common with U, so it doesn't make sense to call U the universal set. The complement of S with respect to the universal set would typically be the set of all elements in U that are not in S. In this case, that is all elements of U, so S' = U. However this is typically only the case when S is the empty set because again, we don't usually consider sets that aren't subsets of our universal set. Does that help?

You're always welcome to send pictures of questions to me on Instagram (link to my profile is in the description). But if I had to guess, I'd say it just means the universal set is generally denoted with the letter U, which is in the English alphabet. But if the statement is part of an exercise, it could also be saying that for this particular exercise, you'll use the whole English alphabet, from A to Z, as the universal set. In that case, we would have that U = { A, B, C, ..., Z }.

So I have a question. Consider region 2 would be A, 4 would be B, Universal would be 1, and the intersect would be 3 in a diagram. In A intersect B compliment, would the set be {1,2, 3} since 3 is in A, or would it be {1,2} since 3 intersects and has B as well?
