Thank you for this. My husband is from Nigeria and he wanted to be surgeon but his family couldn’t afford medical school. He is here now going for nursing and I told him you can still be involved in surgery as a nurse and NP. I shared this with him. He is going to go for a surgical residency when done

Hi! Thank you so much for sharing! This video is what I've been searching for. I am not a surgical tech, mainly in pediatric spine surgery. I'm also in BSN school full-time. I know I want to do more; that's why I'm returning to school. I would love to be in the pre-op, intra-op, and post-op stages in the future. I had no clue what path I needed to take to get there until I found your video, so Thank you again for taking the time to make this.

This wasn't explicitly mentioned in the video but the first step in becoming and RNFA is working as an RN in a operating room to make sure it is for you. Most ORs will train you to both circulate and scrub. My NP school has their own RNFA program as well which requires CNOR. You can only get that certification after two years of perioperative nursing, with one year of intraoperative nursing. I say this because the OR is VERY different from the rest of nursing.

Hey timothy! Great insight! So actually each RNFA program has their unique requirements. The RNFA program that I attend waives the CNOR requirement if you are in NP school. The CNOR requirement remains if you are only licensed as an RN and not enrolled in an APRN program. And yes, you are totally right, the OR is very very different from rest of the nursing field.

Honestly yes, I had a lot of pushback since I didn't have OR experience as a nurse but I networked well and found my way in. My other video talks about this journey where I talk about losing one of my rotation sites and managing to find another.

Glad I found this channel. This is what I want to do as an NP. Offering first assist services to surgeons free of charge to them, and billing insurance on your own and getting paid from them. My cousin, who is a surgical PA, does this and banks out like crazy doing neuro spine and CT cases

Hello, how much costs a Surgical First Assistant Certificate? Ist ist dual like school and job, does you earn money in these years? How is that in America? We in Germany have 3 years and it is payed by 1 year 800, second more and last year 1200 € and it is dual, then with passing am exam you're certified. But how is this in the US? I cannot find concrete informations in the internet sooo enjoying but it's interesting

Question! If I wanted to go the RNFA route, should I get other nursing experience first? I was planning to go straight to the OR as a new grad. I know you can be an RNFA without being an NP but I’m hearing that the first choice for an assist would be an NP over an RN. If that’s the case…I would need some more direct patient care experience for NP school then, right?
@floored3078
@floored3078 Жыл бұрын
You can jump straight into NP school after an RN bachelor's degree, no experience required. Most people opt to get experience first as an RN, but it isn't mandatory. Go get it! $$$$$
@sabasinthehouse
@sabasinthehouse 8 ай бұрын
Yes I agree with the above comment! If you get into the OR as a new grad, then go for it. And yes, you are right, NP's are preferred over RNFA's not because of skill but just because billing is easier.

I am working in OR as a scrub practitioner and wanted to do surgical first assist Do i need my manager or my hospital to approve me to go on the course or can i just enroll it
@sabasinthehouse
@sabasinthehouse 2 жыл бұрын
You can certainly enroll in an RNFA program without approval. However, you will need approval from the hospital in order to do the clinicals part of the RNFA program because contracts have to be established to let a student do their RNFA hours.

What would be your recommendations for an ICU nurse who wants to be a first assist np
@kinkii09
@kinkii09 2 жыл бұрын
Would love a response to this question
@sabasinthehouse
@sabasinthehouse 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this question! Since you have lots of critical care experience from working in the ICU, I would suggest attending an acute care NP program if you haven't done so and also researching jobs within the OR to get your feet wet in the OR. And then you can also start researching first assist programs within your area. If I were to redo everything again, I would first get a job in the OR, make my connections with surgeons, and then once I'm established, attend an NP program while working in the OR, and then obtain your first assist after that. Hope this helps!

I’m currently an undergrad (BA in psychology w/ Business admin minor). I’m thinking about doing a surgical tech program then working my way up to Surgical first assist. Is this a smart plan or should I consider doing nursing? I want to be in the OR
@sabasinthehouse
@sabasinthehouse 2 жыл бұрын
To be a first assist RNFA, keep in mind that you do need to be a nurse first in order to be able to perform particular procedures whereas if you became a surgical assistant without having the nursing certification, it may be generally harder to find an institution that will allow you to do that. It all depends on how the state bills first assist and what certifications are needed in order for your services to be billed. First investigate where you intend to practice (state/institution) and then check the credentialing. Personally, I would become a nurse first and then do first assisting as a RN or NP. Or you could go to PA school as well and you automatically are credentialed to be able to first assist upon graduation. Hope this helps and good luck!

Can you practice surgery as an RNFA without an advanced degree?
@sabasinthehouse
@sabasinthehouse 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, you can be a Registered Nurse and be an RNFA! Your duties, however, will vary from that of an advanced practice provider and the compensation will obviously vary. Another thing to keep in mind if you choose to not pursue an advanced degree is sometimes, depending on the institution, the RN is the third priority for a first assistant. The order of assisting in several institutions occurs as follows: Medical Resident then NP/PA then RN. I would investigate in your area if such order exists if this would matter in your career.
