What he's missing is the love and laughter that only family can provide. I was living in South Korea for a few years and tho I was making money and the country is beautiful, I was very different from the people there both physically and culturally. Just like him I had friends and people to joke and laugh with but at the same time I was extremely sad in the inside. I got so depressed that I eventually had to move back home. At first I regretted it because I was saving so much money while there. But now that I'm back with my family everyday I'm the happiest I've ever been.

He needs to go home to feel happy, but he's worked so hard to reach his lifestyle in Senegal and knows he will start from the bottom back in Vietnam. As a Filipino, I definitely relate to Duong's story. Aside from fertilized duck embryos, another thing Filipinos and Vietnamese have in common is RESILIENCE. I hope Duong would find happiness in Senegal.

Anyone whether Filipino, Vietnamese, Chinese, Caucasian, etc. who are brought up in a first world country without hardships will always be less resilient than those who had no choice but to be brought up in poorer and less developed country.

I think a Vietnamese have more in common with Senegal than anyone coming out of America. Americans are use to a certain set of standards. Even Black Americans. We will not settle for anything, even if it means it would free us from some of the harsh realities of America. But to a Vietnamese, he has discovered paradise. There are many places in his home country that are worse off.

Senegal is a nice country. Some say he is stuck in Africa ( Senegal, for those who fail geography). Buying a ticket to Vietnam should be fairly affordable. I think he is struggling with his past. Few advice for him: Keep working hard ( he is just doing that), found a family or keep smashing that juicy girl. Just Enjoy Life!

Really appreciative of your work. I begin to be aware of Vietnamese workers in Taiwan few years ago, and their stories were attractive to me. Few years latter I got a chance of working in Vietnam and have some contact with the Vietnamese from different background. There are still many to discover. Your video is touching! As much as I like food and traveling, I've done hundreds of videos of them already. They might get more views, but artistically, I wanted to make videos that challenged me more and tell stories. These types of videos are way more time consuming and expensive to produce, but I'm happy to share these stories. With that being said, there will still be food and traveling videos. I just want to mix it up. The same content gets stale over time.

It's what happens when you only chose the dark side bit you know better. Wanting to have the world...be known etc generally leads here. I found a really uneducated comment from him so he's definitely conflicted in his soul. In some parts he seems empathetic but not in a particular comment I found uneducated and offensive to my people. I hope he gets his life in order. It's a struggle to be forced to adapt but at least for him it's a choice. Some countries don't allow people of color to openly have their culture without ridicule and many have lived in confusion as well. We still fight for the right! People lack empathy so they only see their perspective or things as it only pertains to them. Clearly he's hurting like people in Amerikkka who we're intruded on and still are. Hope we all figure out who we are and who we are suppose to be not to mankind but to God. Materialistic things do perish as well as the flesh. Adapting to anything other than the earth is stressful for those who are cultured. Perhaps those who still hold on to culture will always be torn souls until this rat race is ended? 🤔 Most don't even know how to live off the land. That was part of the earth's purpose.

Hey Kyle, As a Viet Kieu (from Australia) I found this very interesting and thought provoking. It sounds tragic when he says he was conned and somehow landed in West Africa since it was not his initial intention. But it seems he has made a decent living thru hard work and the kindness of locals. I also watched the sequel and I guess his heart now lies in Senegal. Africans are the most friendliest and open minded people in the world. I wish every human had the heart of Africans. This would be a better place. I am from Ghana and I know why I say this. This man should be working in one of the big restaurants in Senegal. In Ghana we have many Chinese, Indians, lebonese, etc. We live peaceful with one another. Why can't the rest of the world do the same? I think he is happy. He just miss his family. I think he should go on vacation to Vietnam. That will make him happy. He miss home. There is nothing like the place you love. He is a survivor. I don't know how he survived not speaking the language and not knowing anyone. He is inspirational. God bless him and may his business grow to the point he become very very happy. He is not content. He wants more. I pray he gets everything he wants. He will always have a home in Senegal even if he choose to leave. Senegalese are very peaceful and quiet people. I visited there with a boyfriend that was from their. It's kind of boring compared to Ghana. I hope he visits Ghana one day. I don't think he would come back to Senegal. He would do better in Ghana.

How ignorant are those people thinking that Senegal is a shithole and are surprise to see a nice car there! This guy lives in a poor area of Dakar. Even in the popular neighborhoods, you'll find nice homes, nice cars and other nice things. Don't even get me started on areas like Almadies, Fann, Mermoz, Plateau, Hann Maristes, etc. which are very opulent. Travel more and you guys will discover that the majority of Senegalese people are not starving to death even though the country has work to do to be fully developed.

I can confirm. I stayed in over twenty houses/shacks/huts during my travels across West Africa.... and the nicest was in Dakar (four levels with gardens and servants). The wealth disparity there is huge.

Fun fact: 2002 was my first World Cup and we were assigned countries in class to look up facts about. I got Senegal and figured they could be my team in the abscence of Vietnam, so my first World Cup game I saw live on TV was the win against France, seeing them make the quarter finals felt great and for some reason I almost cried when they lost on golden goals to Turkey in the quarters... I was a wimpy child. Even though I don't follow their exploits as much these days, Senegal are my boys, congrats. That's how I got to know the country Senegal. Senegal beating France(1998 World Cup champions) was like the greatest thing ever in 2002 World Cup. El hadji diouf made his career based on that game.

Great video! I love Vietnamese people. They are humble, hardworking, polite, friendly. My dad had a Vietnamese family working for him in his small business , and the mother would make us kids those rice paper spring rolls, the same ones this guy sells. They are incredible! One of the best things I ever tasted. We learned to make them in my family. You have to get the rice paper from an oriental market. I've never been able to find these in a restaurant, not even a Vietnamese restaurant. You either have to know someone who will make them for you, or learn how to make them yourself.

He's a bit sacrificial in his decisions. He doesn't want to waste all the time and effort he put in to earn a living where he's at. He feels that he's too old to go back home and have to start all over. He doesn't want to go back home to his wife and be a useless burden to her because he'd have no job or way of living. He thinks completely selflessly. Even though he's suffering on the inside, he is content with the fact that he molded his purpose and doesn't want to give it up. He still has a connection with his daughter he lost and he feels like he doesn't want to leave her even though she's in the grave. I just wonder if his wife comes to visit him from time to time. I think anyone could find some happiness in hard situations when they share it with a loved one. But I don't think he'd be happy to see his wife suffer with him. His loyalty, dedication, long-suffering, selflessness puts me to shame. I doubt I could do half of what he's done.

I am aware that many countries are different within Africa and that Africa is a continent with diverse cultures. However, most people don't know where Senegal is or that it's even a country in Africa, I had to include Africa in the promotions and title simply for search-ability. Africa is just searched more commonly than Senegal. , I needed a title that is good for searches and to catch people's instant attention because of the effort, resources, and time it took me (by myself) to film and edit this. This was also the only video of Africa I ever made so far, so I wanted it to stand out. So I hope you guys understand my reasoning for titling it the way I did. I also put in parenthesis (Senegal) and even within the video, I gave a brief description of Senegal. Again, no disrespect to anyone or anything, but I titled it for strategic view purposes. WIthin the video I did mention that I was in Africa and it felt very surreal... well that was true.. it was my first time on the continent. It wasn't my way of over generalizing all the countries... it was just a statement about the first time I step foot on a new continent. I said the same thing about Europe when I went to Germany for the first time as it was the first time I went to Europe. Sorry if it offended anyone and I have titled it more appropriately. . Couple of things. 1. This video has layers to it. Very deep. You have to watch it a few times to grasp all that is here. 2. The man is suffering from trauma. That is why he feels so empty despite finally having material things. He hates his job because he primitively knows he needs space to process but the work hours do not allow him the luxury. He would be just as unhappy in Vietnam. 3. When he says he was happy making less, that is due to being in survival mode. When you are happy just to eat and have shelter your problems are simplified and your brain will not waste energy on emotional well being but the physical. 4. Props to this man. He has heart but there is always a price to pay for bravery.

*Africa truly is a beautiful and potent continent.* TV paints a wrong picture. The only things bad are the historical and present exploitation of Africa by outsiders and the corruption of their own governments. These two things are the reasons why growth is hard. It makes African scholars leave Africa to go somewhere else because they also know future is close to impossible with high-placed people taking everything for themselves. For the continent itself, it's very rich in resources.
